Wildlife enthusiasts and lake lovers will find Legion Lake Campground positioned directly across from Legion Lake, with 25 concrete-pad sites equipped with electric hookups. The campground sits within Custer State Park's network of scenic drives, placing campers at the heart of the Black Hills' most active wildlife corridors.
Sites 8-15 occupy the more wooded back section of the campground, offering increased privacy among the pines. Each concrete pad accommodates everything from large RVs to small tents, though campers must bring water containers since individual site hookups aren't available. A central water spigot near the restrooms serves the entire campground. Chris A. notes "other than electric your on your own so bring water containers and empty tanks."
The campground's location provides immediate access to Legion Lake's shoreline trail and puts campers minutes from the park's Wildlife Loop Road. Morning drives yield frequent bison, prairie dog, and deer sightings with reduced traffic. Sylvan Lake sits nearby for those seeking hiking opportunities around its granite formations. The park's scenic drives connect directly to Mount Rushmore (45 minutes), Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Needles Highway.
Clean restrooms with hot showers serve all sites, and the adjacent Legion Lake Lodge provides a restaurant, gift shop, and firewood sales. The campground operates from mid-May through mid-October with reservations available through the state park system. Sara S. describes it as a "quiet campground, so I couldn't ask for more."
The town of Custer provides additional dining and supply options seven miles west. For those wanting full hookups, Stockade Lake North Campground offers water connections alongside electric service.
