Camping sites around Sandy Lake offer visitors access to over 300 campsites at various locations, most within a 20-minute drive of the lake. The region sits at about 1,250 feet elevation in western Pennsylvania's Mercer County, with most campgrounds operating seasonally from April through October. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-85°F with moderate humidity levels making camping comfortable in shaded sites.
What to do
Fishing at Pymatuning State Park: The large lake attracts anglers year-round with its population of walleye, bass, and catfish. "We camped on the Ohio side of the lake but spent several hours on the Pennsylvania feeding the HUGE schools of carp at the spillway. Where else can grandparents buy stale bread and feed these 'Pig Fish'? The ducks do actually walk on the backs of the fish to battle for scraps of bread!" notes Ralph L. about Pymatuning State Park Campground.
Mini golf and swimming: Several campgrounds maintain recreational facilities for non-hiking activities. At Goddard Park Vacationland, facilities include "2 pools great food at the snack sack min golf live bands nice little camp store and so much more you need to try this place," according to Rich E.
Halloween weekend events: Many campgrounds schedule special events during the fall season. Susan R. notes, "It was Halloween themed weekend and the extent of planning they do for the patrons was outstanding," about her stay at Goddard Park Vacationland in late summer.
What campers like
Clean bathrooms: Nearly all positively reviewed campgrounds emphasize bathroom cleanliness. John M. notes about Jellystone Park at Kozy Rest, "Great campground and very clean. Probably the cleanest shower house I have ever seen at a campground."
Spacious, private sites: Campers appreciate when sites provide adequate room. Chuck E. experienced Goddard Park Vacationland and reported, "I will preference by saying this is not our first time camping. I can't say enough. Very very clean. Our site was level. No issues with any of the hookups. We have a 38 ft trailer and had plenty of room."
Seasonal camper communities: At Rocky Springs Campground, the year-round community receives positive mentions. "This has to be one of, if not, the nicest campground in the area. Deb and Jim have really made this place amazing. It sits up on top of the hill, it's really peaceful, hardly any kids or rowdy people. Most everything including the hookups are brand new. Most of the campground is made up of seasonal campers," reports Tadd and Justin.
What you should know
Uneven terrain at some sites: Some campgrounds feature sloped camping areas. Zach P. notes about Shenango Campground, "I am a tent camper so I like a decent lot and I'm currently at lot 82 and it's big but there is a large mud pit in the middle so we have limited space to put our tent. We ended up putting it on a hill a bit because we knew it would rain."
