Best Campgrounds near New Columbia, PA

Campgrounds near New Columbia, Pennsylvania provide a mix of developed facilities and rustic settings across central Pennsylvania's forested terrain. The Williamsport South-Nittany Mountain KOA offers tent, RV, and cabin accommodations with full hookups and amenities such as showers and a market. Raymond B. Winter State Park Campground, approximately 20 miles southwest of New Columbia, provides a more natural setting with electric hookups and a range of accommodation types including cabins and tent sites. Several campgrounds in the area feature established sites with picnic tables, fire rings, and varying levels of amenities from primitive camping to full-service facilities.

Camping seasons vary significantly throughout the region, with many campgrounds operating from early April through November. Raymond B. Winter State Park remains open from the second Friday in April to mid-December, while some private campgrounds like Riverside Campground operate year-round. Most locations require reservations, particularly during summer weekends and holidays when sites fill quickly. Cell phone reception can be spotty in more remote areas, especially in state forests and parks nestled in the valleys between ridges. Visitors should check ahead for specific campground policies regarding pets, alcohol, and generator use, as these regulations differ between state-operated and private facilities. According to one visitor at Raymond B. Winter State Park, "The primitive campsite is a mix of RV and tent sites and has a good mix of both. The tent sites are definitely more secluded and situated back in the woods."

Waterfront access represents a major draw for many campers in the region. Bald Eagle State Park features sites near Lake Jean with opportunities for fishing, swimming, and boating. Several campgrounds offer direct water access for kayaks and canoes, with campers reporting high satisfaction with lakeside locations. A visitor noted, "We had lake front access to put kayaks in and fish which was awesome. Great walking path around lake for kids to ride bikes to parks or beach." Family-friendly amenities are common at established campgrounds, with many featuring playgrounds, hiking trails, and recreational facilities. Campers frequently mention the peaceful atmosphere, particularly at tent sites tucked into wooded areas away from busier RV sections. For those seeking more privacy, state forest primitive sites typically offer a more secluded experience with fewer amenities but greater solitude.

    Riverside Campground & Riverside Roadhouse

Great location & proximity to Williamsport

Came thru for a night and wanted to catch a game at the Little League World Series. Stayed here one night and caught an uber to the museum and game. Got the last site for the night. Did a few loads of laundry, ate a good dinner at the restaurant, kids enjoyed the pool and swam in the river. Big huge park and tons of grassy areas. Really lovely. Nice staff.

    Ravensburg State Park Campground

Use lat and long to find peaceful woods by stream

Nice and shaded! No one there but us in site 6, not even a ranger checked on us. Has modern toilets and shower. Most sites are spacious. They have nice raised tent pads. It’s very humid so many picnic tables have green moss.

First come first serve but still had to pay transaction fee! which was annoying for our one night stay as if rather the state parks get that.

Use lat and long coordinates for directions or you will be in the wrong spot.

    Ricketts Glen State Park Campground

    Ricketts Glen not as expected

Arrived mid-afternoon, visitor center/Ranger office was closed, our reservation sheet was available in a mailbox near the door with instructions. No human contact. Park was not mowed, seemed a little rough & unattended. Our full hookup site was large with table and fire ring, and required some leveling. Not much shade in the full hookup loop, so was happy to have electricity for A/C. The beach was a little more than a half mile walk from our site.

    Reeds Gap State Park Campground

    Awesome !

Stayed here on a Sunday night without a reservation. We were the only ones there. Pay by honor system at the park office. Campground was quiet and lovely. Only 14 sites. Bathroom with hot showers is nearby. One shower stall in each bathroom and the showers had a large dressing area. Water is near the picnic pavilion.

    Lakewood Park Campground

    Quiet and new

Lots of good things here. Large sites, new buildings, including the office and all the bathrooms. Only thing missing is a pool. You’re not allowed to swim in the lake although you’re allowed to use floats. The area has not much to do unless you would like the state park, which is close by. Kind of surprised they allow fireworks, as we were here on July 4 weekend. Would definitely come back.

    Worlds End State Park Campground

    Another world

Health kinda made it impossible to really do much. But the setting, weather, views, and timing made sitting around the fire with family more than good enough. It feels like you're in another world, or at least separated from the daily hassles and vexations of society, with a wall of a mountain between you and them. Only got to spend a few days, but without a doubt we will be returning to enjoy the serenity and time together, with nature. Definitely a good spot or you're searching for peace and quiet. Also there's pretty much zero cell service, which is a good thing in my opinion.

Guide to New Columbia

Camping options near New Columbia, Pennsylvania range from riverside settings to woodland retreats across central Pennsylvania's ridge and valley terrain. Most campgrounds operate from early spring through fall, with the peak season running May through September when daytime temperatures average 75-85°F. Weather patterns can change quickly in this region, with afternoon thunderstorms common during summer months and occasional flooding along riverfront properties.

What to do

Water activities on the Susquehanna River: At Riverside Campground & Riverside Roadhouse, campers can enjoy direct river access. "We dropped in at Montgomery boat club instead of Muncy. Took about 3 hours with a lunch stop on island. Nice spots right next to river where we set up lawn chairs in river and let the kids play," reports Shannon C.

Miniature golf and water slides: Splash Magic RV Resort features multiple recreational amenities. According to Marc A., the campground has "lots to do for kidos and family," though he notes it "is a very tight campground." The resort includes bumper boats and mini-golf courses that require additional fees.

Hiking forested trails: Explore numerous woodland paths at Raymond B. Winter State Park Campground, where trails connect directly to campsites. Kassie F. notes, "Only was able to spend one night here but I'm excited to return ASAP! The night skies were beautiful (starry starry night w/little light pollution) and trails galore leading directly from the campground."

What campers like

Quiet woodland settings: Many campers prefer the secluded environment at Raymond B. Winter State Park. Ethan describes the campground as having "camp sites all over and very secluded and private. 10/10." The park's natural setting contrasts with more developed facilities elsewhere.

Swimming opportunities: Williamsport South-Nittany Mountain KOA provides pool access that campers consistently rate highly. Brandon W. highlights the "nice newer pool" as part of what makes this "a great family campground" with "awesome playground and other kid stuff."

Entertainment options: Live music is available at Riverside Campground on weekends. Rick C. explains, "They offer a lot of entertainment (live music until 10PM on Friday and Saturday) and daily specials during the week. The locals were friendly... Give it a try."

What you should know

Site spacing varies significantly: Many campgrounds in the region have tightly spaced sites, especially those with full hookups. At Ricketts Glen State Park Campground, T K. notes, "Site was pretty nice, but there is very little privacy as the sites are so close to each other. Also no service (Verizon)."

Water quality concerns: Some campgrounds experience seasonal water issues. Lee D. reports about Ricketts Glen: "The water had been tested earlier in the season and unsafe levels of manganese were detected. All water spigots were shut off and covered but we were told it was safe to wash our dishes and brush our teeth."

Flooding risk: Campgrounds along waterways may experience flooding after heavy rains. Amanda + Will shared that at Riverside Campground, "We unfortunately got stuck in infamous Northeast PA weather but we made the best of it. There were thunderstorms and campsite was a little flooded but we were still able to camp."

Tips for camping with families

Pet-friendly options: Not all campgrounds welcome pets in every section. At Ricketts Glen State Park, only certain loops allow pets. Lee D. explains, "There were many tent campers in this loop, which does not allow pets (the other, smaller loop does allow pets)."

Kid-focused amenities: Little Mexico Campground offers creek access popular with families. Amy G. reports, "My husband and our three sons usually camp here at least two times a summer. We always get a site by the creek and have a great time. The sites are always clean and the staff is great."

Consider noise levels: Some parks have noise sources that might disturb light sleepers. Williamsport South-Nittany Mountain KOA offers quieter sites away from common areas. Traci F. notes, "Our site was along the main road and we expected a lot of traffic, but it was actually pretty quiet."

Tips from RVers

Check site dimensions carefully: Many best places to camp near New Columbia have tight turning radiuses or short sites. At Fantasy Island Campground, Joe B. warned, "Very tight parking, I told them my trailer was 35 feet long, they put me in a site that was impossible to back into. 4 different sites had to move their vehicles and I still couldn't do it."

Limited full hookup availability: Certain campgrounds offer limited full-service sites that book quickly. At Ricketts Glen, according to James S., "Our full hookup site was large with table and fire ring, and required some leveling. Not much shade in the full hookup loop, so was happy to have electricity for A/C."

Electrical issues during peak usage: During hot weekends when air conditioners run constantly, electrical systems can be strained. Debbie W. observed at Splash Magic that "Electric ran below 110 volts the entire weekend" during a particularly hot period when "everyone had their air running."
