Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Cowanesque Lake

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Ives Run Campground accommodates pets in its spacious, well-maintained sites surrounding Cowanesque Lake. The campground features full hookups on paved pads with large grassy areas behind sites for pet activities. Tompkins Campground, another pet-friendly Army Corps of Engineers facility on the lake, maintains level, paved sites with significant distance between campers, allowing ample space for pets to enjoy the outdoors while leashed. Both campgrounds enforce standard pet policies requiring owners to keep dogs leashed at all times, clean up after their pets, and prevent excessive barking. The grounds are kept spotless with regular maintenance and monitoring of all areas including pet waste disposal. Sites in both locations offer various hookup options including full hookup, electric/water, and primitive sites suitable for tent camping, RVs, and some cabin accommodations.

Multiple hiking trails surround the lake area, providing excellent opportunities for leashed dogs to exercise while exploring the natural environment. The lake offers water access where pets can cool off during summer months, though swimming policies for pets vary by specific beach area. Nearby Hills Creek State Park also permits pets at campsites and on most trails, though they are prohibited in swimming areas and park buildings. Wildlife encounters are common in the region, necessitating careful pet supervision, especially during dawn and dusk hours. The rolling hills and forested areas provide scenic walking routes away from main camping areas. Wellsboro, approximately 20 minutes from the lake, offers veterinary services and pet supply stores for emergency needs or forgotten items. During peak summer months, sites fill quickly so advance reservations are essential for pet owners planning weekend stays.

    Happy Acres Resort

Nestled in the mountains of PA

Stayed for 5 nights with a partial hook up for our brand new 32 foot travel trailer. Other reviewers had mentioned that sites were small, so we specifically asked for a larger site. We ended up getting a corner site right on the edge of a hill looking down on the main office and playground. It was perfect. Playground was huge with multiple playsets suitable for all ages. Bathrooms/showers we're clean and well kept. There was a basketball court, shuffleboard and carpet pool that you could borrow equipment for. Our son and his family rented a wolf den cabin and it was very clean as well. Internet access was spotty, as expected but WiFi at the main office was good. We enjoyed the small, but very clean pool. Would definitely go back. Pet friendly, but there isn't a dog park/off leash area. Staff were friendly and helpful. Right across the street from little pine state park.

    Finger Lakes RV Resort

    Just as advertised

Wonderful location and marvelous hosts. We were welcomed with chocolate chip cookies as we checked in. Bathrooms were beautiful and clean. Two wineries we could walk to and dozens more nearby. Our site was spacious and the dog park gave our pups plenty of time off leash. We definitely plan on returning.

    Watkins Glen State Park Campground

    Nice Hiking

This park offers over 300 campsites with restrooms, hot showers, dumping stations and firewood for sale. The park is open all year round. Check for dates on openings for pool, campgrounds, and trails. Pets are allowed on the grounds but not on the trails

The trails follow a gorge with multiple waterfalls that weave in and out of small caves and falls. For all you wondering, swimming is not allowed in the gorge. Overall nice hiking. My only drawback is the dog rule and the campsites being so close to one another.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park PA Wilds

    Kids has a fantastic time

Kids has a great time at this campground. Two playgrounds, a pool, two jumping pillows, mini train, carousel, and activities. Good for bike riding although hilly. The site we booked online had bad measurements, so when we got there we found our trailer wouldn't fit. The camp map is close but not very accurate, so calling them to book if you have any questions is the way to go. We went back to check in when we discovered our problem and got the site swapped with no issues. They're just transitioning to the campspot system this year, and they're working out the bugs. The staff was really great during this whole visit. The new site was a few down from where we originally booked and it was much better. I'd recommend the outer part of the loop that circles the common areas. Woods and shade but very close to all the happenings. The big playground is new and very nice. The small one is mainly two very big playsets (pirate ship and castle). My kids enjoyed both. Two jumping pillows were awesome. Pool was cold but fun. The campground has new owners this year, and renovations are going on. Everything is very clean, and I'm looking forward to the updates they're making. No breed restrictions for dogs. No dog park. Standard GPS directions for this campground are wrong, (coming from 15N they have you turn right at the end of the ramp, you need to turn left) So plot your route before you go. Otherwise it guides you to a gravel road with a no campers sign. The entry road to the campground itself is a very steep, narrow road with a small curve at the top. It's well-maintained but keep an eye out for campers coming down. There's space for getting by but it's tight. Overall this is a very nice campground that's getting some updates that it deserves. The staff is really nice and helpful. We look forward to going back.

    Ives Run

    Best campground in Northcentral PA

Taking everything into consideration, it’s hard to find a nicer campground to stay for a night or two weeks.

    • clean, well maintained and monitored.

    • large sites on macadam pads. Large fields behind most sites for activities.

    • full hook ups available

    • numerous hiking trails, large lake for boating, fishing and swimming.

    • centrally located between Mansfield, Wellsboro and Corning

    *pet friendly. Alcohol allowed

the only draw back is that it fills up quickly and you need to reserve many months ahead of time especially for holidays. Not group camping friendly because of the reservation system. No pavilions for group activities within the Campground

Guide to Cowanesque Lake

Cowanesque Lake spans 1,090 acres in north-central Pennsylvania's Tioga County with an average depth of 40 feet. The lake and surrounding campgrounds sit at approximately 1,080 feet elevation, creating cool summer evenings even when daytime temperatures reach the 80s. Primitive camping options extend beyond the main campgrounds, with sites available in the Lawrence Recreation Area for those seeking more seclusion.

What to do

Hiking trails: The Pine loop at Ives Run Main Campground offers tent campers access to lakeside views and trails. "The Pine loop is a pleasant escape for tent campers hoping for a good view of the lake. Note that the access gravel access road to this loop is about a mile to the 'comfort station' with flush toilets and showers," reports Katherine T.

Water activities: Numerous boat launches provide access points around the lake for fishing, kayaking, and swimming. "Well organized camp with sites in full sun to full shade and everything in between. Grounds had swimming area and multiple boat launch locations on large man made lake," notes Jeremy C. about Ives Run.

Visit PA Grand Canyon: Located 30 minutes from Cowanesque Lake, this natural landmark offers additional hiking opportunities. At Leonard Harrison State Park Campground, "There is a hiking trail that will take you down into the canyon. It is a mile or so and pretty steep, but well maintained. Portions are steps. There are a few waterfalls to view on the way down," describes Denice S.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the ample room between sites at Tompkins Campground. "All roads and parking pads are paved. The sites are closer together than most other COE parks where we've stayed. We stayed in the Bench Loop which is very busy since it is waterfront," writes Bran P.

Clean facilities: Maintenance standards are consistently mentioned in reviews. "Sites are very spacious and clean. Love it here peaceful and quiet," notes John E. about his stay at Ives Run.

Fishing opportunities: The lake provides excellent fishing access directly from campsites in certain areas. "Had a great few days here camped in RV next to lake. Amazing driftwood to be had. Good kayaking. Peaceful. Trees. Nice sites if close," shares Rebecca E. about Lawrence Recreation Area.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially during summer months and holidays. "The only draw back is that it fills up quickly and you need to reserve many months ahead of time especially for holidays. Not group camping friendly because of the reservation system," advises James P. about Ives Run.

Site variations: Different loops offer varying levels of amenities and views. "I booked site 144 at the primitive sites in Oct 2021. It was a great spot and happily, I was totally alone as no one had booked any of the sites near me. The sites I was located on all had a small piece of water access which allowed you to sit by the water," explains Christopher D.

Off-season options: For those seeking more solitude, consider camping outside peak summer months. "I'd go back mid week or off season," recommends Rebecca E. about Lawrence Recreation Area.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Hills Creek State Park Campground offers additional recreation options for children. "The swim area is one of the best around. Playgrounds are fun and the snack stand is a little expensive, but delicious! The hike around the lake is not that long and a pretty easy walk. We did it with a 5 year old and he had no complaints," shares J K.

Educational programs: Rangers often provide nature-focused activities for children. "The rangers offer educational programs that are free of charge!" explains Amanda H. about Hills Creek.

Swimming options: Multiple beaches around Cowanesque Lake provide supervised swimming areas during summer months. "Lake available for swimming complete with snack bar, including ice cream!" notes Amanda H., making this a popular option for pet friendly camping near Cowanesque Lake when you need a break from hiking with your dog.

Tips from RVers

Hookup locations: At Scenic View Campground, "The camper lots hook ups could use an upgrade," according to Carl M., suggesting bringing extension cords and hoses to ensure you can reach connections.

Level sites: Most RV sites around Cowanesque Lake feature paved pads that are relatively level. "Spots are level and paved. It is always clean. There is a beach for swimming, marina for boating and the sites are huge and grassy," explains Stacey C. about Tompkins Campground.

Accessibility: The paved sites and roads throughout the Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds make them suitable for larger rigs. "Taking everything into consideration, it's hard to find a nicer campground to stay for a night or two weeks. Large sites on macadam pads. Large fields behind most sites for activities. Full hook ups available," notes James P., highlighting why the area is popular for pet friendly camping trips near Cowanesque Lake.
