What to do
Hiking nearby trails: Greenwood Furnace State Park offers diverse terrain for hikers looking for day treks near Bellefonte. "The Mid State hiking trail comes right through the Campground and there are numerous other trails within the park," explains James P., who visits the park multiple times annually.
Explore historical sites: The area's iron-making heritage provides opportunities to learn about 19th century industry. "Very interesting history of the old furnaces. Gorgeous park - very PA-scenic!" shares Melanie Z. about Greenwood Furnace State Park Campground.
Water activities: At Black Moshannon State Park Campground, visitors can experience a unique natural phenomenon. "Great camping area stop a mountain...nice unique lake that is incredibly dark in color. Lilly pads abound with great flowers," notes Clay P. The dark water color comes from plant tannins in the bog ecosystem.
Mountain biking: The Raystown Lake Recreation Area features extensive trail systems. "This upper loop is also the quietest of the loops and although there were still plenty of boaters in the camp there were just as many bikers. Raystown is a huge boating destination," explains Travis S.
What campers like
Spacious camping sites: Many campers appreciate the size of sites at Bald Eagle State Park. "The sites are big and spaced far apart. Its a quiet park at night, but thers plenty to do during the day," notes Graham S., highlighting the privacy available even during busy periods.
Clean facilities: Poe Paddy State Park Campground receives praise for its maintenance despite being more primitive. "I've stayed here twice for camping trips. It's a great small campground that has basic amenities. The experience is likely highly site dependent, as there are a few distinct areas to stay depending on your needs and luck," explains Joanna H.
Wildlife viewing: The natural setting provides opportunities for animal sightings. "We love this park and usually rent a boat and swim and watch the eagles all day. One of the best experiences ever," shares Sara W. about her time at Bald Eagle State Park.
Diverse glamping options: Luxury camping near Bellefonte includes multiple accommodation styles. "The campground is divided by a local road and has 2 different feels. The lower section is right by the river with several riverfront sites and many river view sites. The upper side has the playground and kids activities," describes Bryan S. about Buttonwood Campground.
What you should know
Connectivity limitations: Cell service varies significantly throughout the region. "There is NO cell service and park rangers do 'rounds' but aren't stationed at the site. There are a couple of water pumps, several well-maintained pit toilets, and an emergency phone," warns Joanna H. about Poe Paddy State Park.
Seasonal booking patterns: Availability becomes extremely limited during peak periods. "Make a reservation way ahead of your date as this campground is very popular and sites book early. It has sites to accommodate any R.V. and lot of tent sites," advises Denise D. about Black Moshannon State Park.
Weather preparedness: The mountain terrain creates variable conditions. "We came here in mid June so it was a bit chilly at night and warm during the day - bring layers + raincoats as the PA mountain weather can be iffy!" recommends Diane T. about Greenwood Furnace State Park.
Site selection strategy: At Seven Points, campers should research specific loops. "We took a drive around through the other six campgrounds and decided Point was our favorite, but obviously crowded because it is right on the lake. Senoia camp was (our) tied with Ridge, but only the lower portion," suggests Tim J.
Tips for camping with families
Easy access water play: Creeks provide natural entertainment for children. "The creek and river are perfect for curious little ones to explore. Great fishing spot. The walk to the tunnel is quick and easy for all ages," shares Sarah about Poe Paddy State Park.
Activity wristbands: Some campgrounds offer all-inclusive options. "Plan on spending $20 per person for an activity wristband that includes all the extras including mini golf and tubing shuttle," explains Bryan S. about the family amenities at Buttonwood Campground.
Playground accessibility: Consider location relative to play areas when booking. "The Park itself offers a lot to do with fishing. Hiking, the beach, kayak rentals, etc. I've never had a bad time at Black Moshannon and will keep coming back," shares Graham S.
Educational programming: Prince Gallitzin State Park Crooked Run Campground offers learning opportunities. "Rangers were wonderful to work with in setting up teaching opportunities for the girls. We will definitely go back," reports Nicole F., who visited with a Girl Scout troop.
Tips from RVers
Level site selection: Many campgrounds feature varied terrain. "According to our LevelMatePRO app) it was perfectly level...that was definitely a first for us. We set our chocks and started our setup," shares Tim J. about their experience at Seven Points Ridge Camp.
Dump station facilities: Waste management infrastructure varies between parks. "On our way out, we visited the dump station again and got in one of the 4 lanes with no wait. The dump station, as noted above had wide lanes and made the experience an easy and clean one," explains Tim J.
Site photo research: Visual confirmation helps match RV size to site dimensions. "Definitely look at pictures of your site before reserving. The distance between spots was good. Roads were a little narrow but manageable," advises Greg J. about their first trip in a new camper to Bald Eagle State Park.
Water access planning: Many sites offer electric but limited water hookups. "I'm not sure about other sites, but we did not have a water hookup, just a spigot we could fill from. The dump station worked fine and was clean," notes Greg J.
