    Tar Hollow State Park Campground

    Memorial Weekend 2020

After being cooped up, we (3 young adults) decided to get out and decided on this campground that was new to all of us. The campground was very low key and made for an easy going weekend! We weren’t too keen on most of the parks amenities, but enjoyed just sitting around the fire the whole time. Pros: -staff was cleaning common areas (bathroom and showers) either once or twice a day -campsite 12 was incredible space and had an added bonus of a deck structure over the creek

Other notes: -WiFi available, but only right by the main office/general store -no service for AT&T or Verizon -Fire tower not accessible -Lake tested high for a bacteria and swimming is not recommended

Corona Virus Notes: -only Ice and Firewood available for purchase at General Store -putt putt, boat and bike rentals, and game box rentals not available -nearby Hocking Hills trails were closed

    Jackson Lake Park

    Campground with Water Park

I stayed at this campground because they hosted a wedding I attended. I chose to stay in a cabin, which was pretty pricy for what it was. for $175, it was a basic cabin with a queen bed and 2 twin bunk-beds, a very small bathroom with a toilet and shower, and a small kitchenette with a microwave, sink, and mini-fridge. The cabin was somewhat dirty - dust on the floor and spider webs in the corner. It had no bed linens, or towels, and the bathroom didn't even have a mirror.

There is a "lake" (more of a large pond) on the property, with fishing, and large inflatables to play on in the summer. There is also a disc golf course. The nearby town Lithopolis is cute, with some local coffee and dining, as well as antique shops.

    Lake Hope State Park Campground

Great Location, Good Vibes, Slightly Slanted Sites

Stayed over Labor Day Weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the site we got for booking only a week in advance! Would stay again!

    - Many sites are quite sloped and slanted, but this cannot be determined by pictures online. With that said, all sites appeared to have a spot for at least 1 tent cleared away and the picnic table and fire ring in a secure location.

    - Most sites only had room for one car parked at the site

    - Clean pit style restrooms! With running water restrooms dispersed through the campground.

    - Lake Hope was a good size for kayaking (and rentals were open and only ~$10 per person per hour for various boating devices).

    - Fishing allowed anywhere!

    - Cool hiking trails throughout to see caves, The Hope Furnace, and water features!

    - Only ~30-40min from all the must see attractions of Hocking Hills and surrounding area!

    - Camp Store with wood, ice, etc.

    Buckeye Lake-Columbus East KOA

    Kabin 7 and Kabin 11

The KOA was what one expects of the KOA lots of features and not very secluded. The Kabins were lovely.

The design is nice as the bunk beds are in their own separate room. This means the back room will sleep four individuals. They also included little tables and benches so you can organize yourself in the room.  The front room has a large bed that sleeps two.  Then outside is the picnic table.  Due to health code rules you have to cook and do food outside of the cabin.

Our first cabin some of the light bulbs were dead and as a result they moved us to another cabin. Problem solved.

The bathrooms were very clean and the folks at the camp store were very helpful. I will say that my friend that took a shower was frustrated as one shower was scalding hot and the other was cold.  The floors were slippery as they didn't have a way to stop the water from going beyond the shower (no rim or lip).  She didn't get to use the Family Shower as you have to get the key from the store.  Shower time was usually before bed time with two little ones as they would get dirty playing during the day.  Since the camp store closes at 8 PM she would just use the standard shower with her kiddos. We thought this was a great feature and would have liked to get a look at the family shower set up.

At the camp store, they would drop off the wood via golf carts as you purchased it.  I was able to buy three bundles for $18.00 as it is cheaper that way.  I also purchased two bags of ice.

The cabin was fun and we were able to keep our trip simple by packing less due to the cabin.  Buckeye Lake State Park is close by and if you don't have a boat they really don't have a lot to offer non-boaters unlike other lake state parks.  We didn't see any trails.  We did go to the "beach" but opted not to swim. Our time was spent at the near by Dawes Arboretum and Newark's Earthworks (mounds).

**Will try to come back and upload more photos and videos later as tonight many of my posts are not fully uploading.

    Forked Run State Park Campground

Dirty pit toilets. Dirty sinks. Beautiful lake.

This state park has a beautiful lake and a nice beach. There are boat rentals and a frisbee golf course. Overall, this part of the park is beautiful.

The campgrounds, however, leave a lot to be desired. The people were really nice, but the facilities were terrible. The pit toilets were filthy- covered in flies, spiderwebs and dirt. They look like they have not been hosed out since the 70's. The showers and sinks are in an old, old building- it could be fine if it were cleaned daily, but it was filthy too. I was there 3 days and the showers and sinks were never cleaned. They were pretty gross from the start, but then by Saturday night one shower housed a pile of feces. No kidding. Poop in the shower.

We stayed in the camper cabin, which is just a very basic shed with a bed, bunk beds, air conditioning and heat. We stayed there because it was July and I wanted A/C and electricity. The cabin smelled like mold.

I'd go back to this lake but will not stay in the campgrounds again.

    Paint Creek State Park Campground

    Premium sites are

We paid extra to have a "Premium" site, which meant we got a deck. That deck held our picnic table,  but there was no room to put our camping chairs. And though we were close to the lake, you could not see it through the trees. We could barely get out of our trailer and into the driveway without falling into a ravine. The fire pit had to be put on the back side of our trailer next to the road as that was the only spot it could fit. We were told to check out other sites in case we want to come back. Ha. The staff knew no one who had ever been here would ever take this site! But... we won't need to check out other sites as we'll never come back.

Pine Creek Cabins & Camping Resort

    Cabin stay

Guide to South Bloomingville

Cabins near South Bloomingville, Ohio range from primitive structures to luxury accommodations within the Hocking Hills region. This area sits within the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau with elevations reaching 1100 feet. Seasonal temperature variations can be significant, with summer highs averaging 85°F and winter lows often dropping below 20°F.

What to do

Hiking trails access: Many cabins provide direct trail access to popular Hocking Hills destinations. At Hocking Hills State Park Campground, visitors can reach Old Man's Cave directly from their site. "The sites aren't very spacious but there's lots of trees nearby and an easy walk to get to Old Man's Cave," notes Elana C.

Fishing opportunities: Lake fishing is available at several properties with cabin rentals. Lake Hope State Park Campground offers both lake access and equipment. "The park has nice camp sites, cabins if you like that kinda thing! But watch out for the FOG on the lake at night!!!!¡ It gets so bad you can't see past the end of your boat!!¡!!¡" advises Robert R.

Historical exploration: Several cabin rental properties are near historical sites. The Hope Furnace iron production facility is accessible from Lake Hope cabins. As one visitor shared, "You are plopped down smack dab in the Zaleski State Forest...so pick a trail, any trail."

What campers like

Private cabin options: Some cabin rentals provide significant privacy from neighboring sites. Pine Creek Cabins & Camping Resort offers secluded cabins with added amenities. "We stayed in one of the small cabins and loved it! Very clean, with thoughtful amenities. Hot tub on the back porch," notes a reviewer.

Water access: Cabins with water features rank highly among reviewers. Campbell Cove Camping offers lakeside cabins with views. "Our favorite place to camp. Kayaking on the lake is amazing and hiking is abundant. Beautiful sunset view," reports Ann H.

Family activities: Cabin properties with organized activities for children receive positive feedback. One camper at Campbell Cove noted, "There is a great playground for kids and a swimming hole. The bathrooms are so clean. You can kayak on the lake and they do have rentals."

What you should know

Bathroom facilities: Cabin bathroom access varies significantly between properties. Some offer private facilities while others require shared bathhouses. At Tar Hollow State Park Campground, "The bathrooms are pit latrines. Normally, I wouldn't be too concerned about this (you're camping! it's cool to rough it a bit!) However…these are some of the dirtiest I've experienced."

Seasonal considerations: Cabin availability changes seasonally, with limited winter options. Some facilities close entirely in colder months. A Tar Hollow visitor noted, "If you're lucky and have no clouds, there is virtually no light pollution and you can see the Milky Way."

Cell service limitations: Many cabin rental areas have limited or no cell reception. As one camper at Tar Hollow explained, "It is pretty remote (no cell phone coverage at even the top of the hills), and really is a chance to 'get away' from the modern life."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly cabin selections: When traveling with children, choose cabins near play areas. Top O' The Caves Campground offers family-oriented cabins. "It offers mini golf, a pool, park and small game room which is awesome for camping with kids. It offers rustic cabins for those that dont tent camp or have a rv," shares Kelli W.

Cabin amenity planning: Many cabin rentals require bringing specific items. Pack sleeping bags or linens, cooking supplies, and basic toiletries. "The bathrooms are rather large and and worked fine. As well as the showers. There are also a few nice looking cabins!" notes a Top O' The Caves visitor.

Activity scheduling: Plan indoor cabin activities for rainy days. Bring board games, cards, and books for weather-impacted stays. A camper shared, "The KOA was what one expects... The camp store is well stocked actually had what you needed if you forgot something."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling concerns: Cabin sites at some properties may require leveling equipment. At Hilltop Resorts and Campgrounds, sites are "Super spacious sites and very peaceful. This is a top-notch camping resort."

Cabin alternatives: For RVers seeking cabin-like amenities, several campgrounds offer premium sites with patios. A Campbell Cove visitor mentioned, "We stayed in one of the rustic cabins. With other family members bringing their RVs. The bathroom facilities were some of the nicest and cleanest we've experienced."

Utility connections: Check what utilities are included with cabin rentals. Many offer electric but require separate water access. As one RVer noted, "Sites are nice and level. Nice playground and clubhouse building."
