    Tar Hollow State Park Campground

    Memorial Weekend 2020

After being cooped up, we (3 young adults) decided to get out and decided on this campground that was new to all of us. The campground was very low key and made for an easy going weekend! We weren’t too keen on most of the parks amenities, but enjoyed just sitting around the fire the whole time. Pros: -staff was cleaning common areas (bathroom and showers) either once or twice a day -campsite 12 was incredible space and had an added bonus of a deck structure over the creek

Other notes: -WiFi available, but only right by the main office/general store -no service for AT&T or Verizon -Fire tower not accessible -Lake tested high for a bacteria and swimming is not recommended

Corona Virus Notes: -only Ice and Firewood available for purchase at General Store -putt putt, boat and bike rentals, and game box rentals not available -nearby Hocking Hills trails were closed

    Premium sites are

We paid extra to have a "Premium" site, which meant we got a deck. That deck held our picnic table,  but there was no room to put our camping chairs. And though we were close to the lake, you could not see it through the trees. We could barely get out of our trailer and into the driveway without falling into a ravine. The fire pit had to be put on the back side of our trailer next to the road as that was the only spot it could fit. We were told to check out other sites in case we want to come back. Ha. The staff knew no one who had ever been here would ever take this site! But... we won't need to check out other sites as we'll never come back.

    Cowan Lake State Park Campground

    Just plain nice

Although it’s quite a bit off the main road, it was a nice place to stay. Gate was manned when we arrived just before 8:00 pm. Clerk told us to book online once we picked our spot, as she had just closed the register. We just chose an open spot that was level as we could see in the dark. Weary from a day of travel, we put our heads on the pillow and were fast asleep. Shortly after 9 we heard several rounds of gun shots; that was alarming because it was well after sunset. All in all it was a nice spot with electric only. Several gray water dumps were situated throughout the campground. Dumpsters were full from I’m sure what was a busy weekend of fall camping. The lake was beautiful with ability to rent kayaks. Frisbee golf was onsite too. Commissary for ice and basic sundries, with playground nearby. We didn’t visit the bathhouse, so I’m unsure of it’s condition. Tenant sites with no electricity were down by the lake. Cabin rentals were in a separate spot, off the lake. All in all, in was a nice place with lots of things to do. More of a destination park, for sure.

Pine Creek Cabins & Camping Resort

    Cabin stay

We stayed in one of the small cabins and loved it! Very clean, with thoughtful amenities. Hot tub on the back porch. This cabin also comes with two horse stalls. Bridle trail access right from campground.

Great views but a little too close to the playground

Site 57 - this site backs up to the ravine and is nice and large. It has a lot of shade and grass. We were able to run a line between trees for a dog run. Great neighbors on both sides but right across the site is the playground. It’s a little noisy but if you have kids, it works. The fire ring was nice, but trash was left inside of it. I found out that there Is no campground host. They did have park staff cleaning the bathrooms both the shower house and the drop toilets. All of the water fountains were closed due to COVID. There was one pump available for water. There are two trash bins on either side of the campground. There is another bigger playground right across from the campground with more parking. There is a small lake with a beach. You can kayak, but it’s really small. Lots of trails to hike and the camp store was open. I would recommend bringing your own wood as it’s just slab cut. The trees and shade were the best part - lots of birds and pretty views.

Ohio River Campground - Hidden Gem

This is a peaceful and quiet campground located along the Ohio River. All sites have 50 amp and water hook ups. Most have fire rings and picnic tables. It is amazing to watch the river barges go by and they also have fishing available. Shower house is clean and warm!!

    Loved it for tent camping

Great camping experience! Waited too late to book in hocking hills state park but found a site here instead. We are tent campers and stayed in site 106 on"Northridge". Loved that the non-electric tent sites were so isolated from the RV campers. Site 107 gets muddy with a lot of rain. Sites 108-112 have a pretty significant slope. Each site in the loop has a picnic table and fire ring. There's a dumpster, pit toilets, and water. It was a short drive to the rest of the campers, a great hot shower, fantastic general store, miniature golf, and the beach to swim or lake to kayak. Took us at least 30 minutes to drive to the common hocking hills hikes but well worth it. We would return.

    Cowan Lake State Park Campground

Full Moon night paddle on the Lake

Cowan Lake State Park - A friend and I were able to kayak on the lake the night of a Friday the 13th moon. It was beautiful. Sadly, no pictures as I do not have a water proof camera. The next day we also went out for another paddle under the bright sun.  The boat ramp and parking lot is easy to use and has a good layout.  They do have some tent sites close to the boat ramp area and you can see the lake from those tent sites.

Our campsite did not have any trees but they have planted a lot of new trees. I assume this due the previous trees having to be cut down due to Emerald Ash borer damage. Our campsite didn't have any shade but others did so you really have to pick wisely.

The trails here are easy and short.  I loved the informational boxes and tags that they had on the trees or plants.  This is helpful if you have little ones with you or if you are like me and just like to learn about the animals/plants on the trail.

The park also had a lending library and walking stick lending program. I thought these were simple but memorable features for this park.

Our campsite was close to two different bathroom structures.  One right behind our site was toilets only. This did mean that sometimes folks would walk on the edge or through the camp site at times.  The other bathroom structure was further down the road and it had both toilets and showers.  The larger bathroom had an ADA shower in it as well.

The camp store was well stocked and you could rent bikes from the store. These bikes were often all over the campground so be extra careful when driving in the park.  They do have the orange flag but as they are low to the ground it is hard to see them at times.

The cabins here have both a fire ring and grill. This isn't the case at all Ohio State parks so it was a nice surprise.  They also have a porch that is screened in with a view of the lake. You are not able to walk down to the lake from the cabin but it is a lovely view.

For those who want to "Walk-On" camp please take a look at the photo of the neon yellow paper as how the park approaches this will be different in the future.

**Not all photos or videos uploading so some information may be missing. I will try to upload again later.

    Olive Branch Campground

    Enough Elbow Room, Nice Greenspace

Sites are level side to side on average with pull thru and back-in sites available. Reasonable space between. A lot of green space in common areas for play space for kids and adults alike. For pull thru, sites 54 and 55 have the best "yards". Nice pond. Clean grounds. Close enough to a variety of options for activities in the area.  Really nice campground.

Cabin accommodations near Sinking Spring, Ohio range from rustic to modern with varied seasonal availability. Most cabins at Pike Lake State Park feature twin or full-size beds with paved sites that accommodate families. Many state parks maintain year-round cabin rentals and several private campgrounds offer unique cabin options. What to do

Lake activities at Long's Retreat Family Resort: Located in Latham, this campground provides multiple water recreation options for cabin guests. The property features "a lake with multiple water slides and a huge floating dock with diving board" plus a "splash pad right at the beach" that's particularly good for younger children. One reviewer notes, "Swimming, water slides, canoeing, go-cart racing, mini golf, and a full arcade give plenty of variety."

Hiking at Shawnee State Park Campground: This park offers several trail options within a short drive of Sinking Spring cabins. The park contains "4 lovely hiking trails that showcase the parks features by taking you through the woods and fields." For more serious hikers, the park features a "Backpack trail, 23 and 40 miles loops with 7 camping areas."

Family activities at Rocky Fork State Park Campground: This campground offers activities beyond the cabin. As one visitor notes, "Camp sites were clean. Shower houses and bathrooms kept very clean and nice. Great place to camp with children. Tons of things for them to do. Beach was clean and lake nice to swim and play in. Fishing was good."

What campers like

Quiet location at Pike Lake State Park Campground: Visitors appreciate the secluded setting of this campground. Reviewers consistently mention the peaceful atmosphere, with one noting it's a "very secluded and quiet" location that makes for "minimal noise." Another camper describes it as having "a good, laid-back vibe."

River views at Sandy Springs Campground: Cabin campers enjoy the Ohio River setting. The campground provides "absolutely stunning views of the Ohio as well as the surrounding hills" and many find it interesting to "watch the river barges go by." One visitor calls it "one of the most relaxing campground we have ever been to."

No cellular service at Long's Retreat: Some cabin campers specifically appreciate the lack of connectivity. A reviewer mentions, "Love no cell reception! Quiet clean and staff (owner) is always pleasant and helpful!" Another notes, "Best part is there is no phone service.....everyone has to actually spend time together and it's a great reset!"

What you should know

Facilities vary widely: Different cabin types provide vastly different amenities. At Pike Lake, while cabins are "not luxurious," one visitor notes "AC worked great, functional kitchen and bigger bathroom than I expected." At Cowan Lake State Park Campground, "The cabins here have both a fire ring and grill" and feature "a porch that is screened in with a view of the lake."

Reservation requirements: Most cabins require advance planning. Shawnee State Park is "totally without any phone signal" which makes on-site reservations difficult. For Sandy Springs, visitors were "able to reserve a drive-thru site on the same day we wanted it" but this is unusual during peak seasons.

Weather considerations: Conditions can impact cabin stays, especially at Rocky Fork where "rain and water made area a bit mushy in places." At Pike Lake, "it rained quite a bit and many of the sites got flooded. The ground here doesn't drain well."

Tips for camping with families

Recreation options: Long's Retreat offers extensive activities suitable for children. A family reported, "We have been going here for the last 6 summers with a big group (nearly 30 kids with us). Everyone always has such a great time and it is the highlight of all the kids summers."

Playground access: Pike Lake provides multiple playgrounds for different age groups. One reviewer noted their site was "right across the site is the playground" and "There is another bigger playground right across from the campground with more parking."

Bathroom facilities: When booking cabins with children, consider bathroom proximity. At Rocky Fork, "Plenty of well kept restrooms spread throughout the camping area" and "Bath house is clean and modern." At Stonelick State Park Campground, one parent mentions "The restrooms are a quick walk and very clean" which is important for families with small children.

Tips from RVers

Site selection at Shawnee State Park: Larger RVs face challenges in some areas. A visitor explains, "We were told that the site we'd been assigned was room enough for 52'. Our RV is only 34' so that would be more than enough. We got there and it was maybe 20-24" in length." Many RVers recommend sites 82, 83, 85, or 78 as more accommodating.

Leveling issues: At Stonelick State Park, "There are a number of good sites, but some with a significant slope that leveling would be an issue." Cowan Lake is described as having "paved sites, most of them fairly level" making setup easier.

Hookup limitations: Most state park cabins have only partial hookups. At Pike Lake "Most sites are only 30 amp electric, no sewer or water hookup," while Rocky Fork has "a few full hook up sites" available. One camper advises that Cowan Lake has "water to fill tanks and Dumping Stations to empty as needed, so great semi-boondocking."
