Best Campgrounds near Montgomery, OH

The Montgomery, Ohio area features a mix of established campgrounds within reasonable driving distance, as no camping facilities exist directly in the city. East Fork State Park Campground, located 24 miles east in Batavia, provides year-round accommodations for tents and RVs with electric hookups, showers, and sanitary dump stations. Winton Woods Campground, situated 12 miles northwest of Montgomery in Cincinnati, offers more diverse options including tent sites, RV spaces, cabins, and glamping facilities. Several state parks within a 30-mile radius provide additional camping opportunities, with Stonelick State Park Campground featuring seasonal camping from April through October in a wooded lake setting.

Campground accessibility varies significantly throughout the year, with most state parks maintaining all-season operations while others like Stonelick close during winter months. "This campground was a little more than what we usually spend per night, but we had come specifically to visit friends staying here," noted one camper about Indian Springs, highlighting the prevalence of full hookup sites in the region. Water access represents a common feature at many nearby campgrounds, with fishing opportunities at Cowan Lake, Caesar Creek, and East Fork State Park. Most established campgrounds require reservations, especially during summer weekends and holiday periods, while walk-in availability may be limited during peak season.

Campers consistently mention the proximity to water activities as a highlight of the region's camping experience. The Little Miami River provides recreational opportunities near several campgrounds, with one visitor describing Jim Terrell Park as a "hidden little gem" with convenient access to a 76-mile paved bike trail. State park campgrounds typically offer moderate privacy between sites, though several reviews note the open layout at parks like Caesar Creek where "sites are side by side, one after the other so you have no privacy and sound carries all the way up the loop." Family-friendly amenities appear frequently in reviews, with many campgrounds featuring playgrounds, nature centers, and organized weekend activities during summer. Fall camping receives particularly positive feedback, with cooler temperatures and changing foliage enhancing the experience at parks like Cowan Lake and Caesar Creek.

    Stonelick State Park Campground

Big sites but can be loud and crowded

Nice big sites, fairly level. We camped at site 35 and it was very slopey, our levelers only helped a little. First night the shower house STUNK but then the next day it smelled fine while our closest bathrooms were out of order. The trail to the lake was right next to the sit and that was lovely.

    Rocky Fork State Park Campground

    Fine tenting, poorly kept

    8/13/2025

Got here after dark, but navigated to a pretty secluded loop that's just for tenting (site 61 - see map). Stakes went in fine. Seemed to be a lot of different types of spiders, which was cool to see and even cooler that they didn't bug me. Less cool - the site wasn't very clean - bits of trash that a park attendant/ranger definitely should've been picking up. Moreover, there were stray cats living in that section (I saw three), which were very cute but I'm sure they're not living their best life and the wildlife probably don't appreciate them being around either. I called later to let the park know (nobody was around during my stay) and they said they'd get maintenance on it. If you stay here and see them, I'd urge you to let the park know again, or maybe call animal control.

    Jim Terrell Park

    Looks Good!

    8/13/2025

NOTE: I did NOT stay here. I was going to, but decided to drive a little farther than I had initially planned. I did want to check it out though because there aren't many reviews.

This looks like a solid option to tent for a night though. The town looks very nice and quiet, and the park seems well-kempt. If the sites are on the river, just know there's a restaurant on the opposite bank that might be a source of noise/light at night, and the park itself is kind of close to the road. I'm not exactly sure where one would tent, but there did seem to be some flat space behind a rafting/kayaking shack to the left as you pull in.

The Landing at Bear Creek RV Park

Best full time campground on the Ohio River!

We are full-time RVers and this is by far the best park we've stayed at! It's peaceful and beautiful, everyone (especially Management) is so friendly and fun! The laundry facility is one of the greatest amenities as we've stayed other places without one, so we truly appreciate it! The splash pad is fantastic for children and adults alike! There's a dog park, and a kids kangaroo jump pad as well. The view of the river is beautiful! On weekends there's entertainment and/or cornhole tournaments to bring everyone together. The park is maintained perfectly and I've enjoyed calling it home! By far the best park in Southern Clermont County! Must see!

    Cowan Lake State Park Campground

    Sizeable Site, Good for Families

We stayed in Site 78. The lot was VERY large and well maintained. The asphalt pad was decently level; a picnic table and fire ring were included.

There was significant variety in the types of sites: some were quite wooded while others were full sun. Some sites were much larger than others.

The restrooms were decent. They weren't new; however, they were very clean. I didn't check out any bath houses.

The campground was filled with parents and kids riding bikes, playing, and having fun. Nobody was out of control or obnoxious. Plenty of dogs were present.

    We'll return next summer.

    Cedarbrook Campground

    Wonderful stay w one hiccup

This is a very well managed and maintain campground except the laundry facility. Washers are old and bed bugs were found. If you stick to your own camper you will be safe. Any campground that has cabins will have bedbugs. That’s a fact!

    Indian Springs Campground

    Nice campground, well cared for

The spaces are gravel and level. The campground is mostly RV with a few private apartments/houseboat.

Quiet, most all of the waterfront sites were taken. We took a chance on last minute reservations and there were plenty of pull through spots. Easy to setup.

Checkin/out no problem. They have a code for gate entry.

Bathhouse bathrooms are date but clean. A bit on small side, not very comfortable.

There is not much common area for grass/waterside…kinda feel like your in someone’s spot/yard area.

There is a playground for young kids.

About 30 minutes from downtown Cincinnati…easy to get to a game.

    Thousand Trails Indian Lakes

    Needs new management

Terrible management. Pics are outdated and most everything is run down. Only one pool open during short hours. No gas station, no slide, nasty lake water & nobody takes the trash/dumpsters out. Completely inundated with annual spots being reserved by weekend warriors meaning minimal availability for people who want to be here during the week. There are SEVERAL dozen spots available and we were told if the spot we got didn’t work we could pick something else. At 8pm during dinner we were disturbed by a park ranger and forced to move to a spot half the size with no hookups. She literally brought us to an overflow area that our rig doesn’t fit in. She made us pack up our entire camp site to move so someone else could have the spot, even though there were MULTIPLE spots available. Had to be extremely persistent to get a FHU spot only to see dozens continue to be available for the rest of our 2 week stay.

They also charge you $5 per package to pick up your own mail from the building and $10 for a key card to access the park. Management is certainly skimming off of customers here. Will travel further to another TT campground to avoid this place in the future.

Guide to Montgomery

Camping near Montgomery offers access to several state parks with diverse recreational opportunities. Most sites in the region feature moderate to minimal tree cover, with notable differences in campsite spacing between state parks and private campgrounds. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall camping provides more comfortable conditions.

What to do

Biking opportunities: From Winton Woods Campground, cyclists can access paved trails throughout the park. One visitor noted, "There is a 1.7 mile paved walking trail is great for walking, running and biking," making it ideal for family outings without leaving the camping area.

Fossil hunting: Caesar Creek State Park Campground offers a unique activity for educational camping trips. A camper mentioned, "We also went to a nearby pioneer village. We even got a permit to collect fossils," highlighting one of the more distinctive activities available near Montgomery.

Kayaking access: The Little Miami River provides paddling opportunities near several campgrounds. At Jim Terrell Park, "This campsite is tucked away as in across the street from the bike trail... Each year this trail keeps getting better and better. It is 76 miles long so if you are a person that likes to bicycle and camp this could be an option for you."

What campers like

Lake views: Many campers appreciate waterfront sites at East Fork State Park Campground. According to one visitor, "Our favorite campsite for the outskirts of Cincinnati. Lots of great spots available! You can get to the lake in about a 15 minute drive," though others note the distance between campground and water.

Urban accessibility: Winton Woods Campground Hamilton County Park receives praise for its proximity to Cincinnati while maintaining natural surroundings. A camper described it as "Great campground and park. Plenty to do. Hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, splash park, etc." Another noted it was "a clean and quiet campground that we were pleasantly surprised to find."

Privacy levels: Campers frequently comment on site spacing, which varies significantly between parks. At Stonelick State Park Campground, visitors enjoy "Nice big sites, fairly level," though some sites have slope challenges, with one camper mentioning, "We camped at site 35 and it was very slopey, our levelers only helped a little."

What you should know

Campground access limitations: Not all Montgomery area campgrounds are operational year-round. Stonelick State Park Campground operates seasonally from "April 1 to October 31," while other parks maintain winter camping options.

Water conditions: Swimming quality varies considerably between parks. At Caesar Creek, a recent visitor warned, "Even though camp ground seems to have beach. Its beach area is just mud and murky water," indicating not all water recreation opportunities meet expectations.

Reservations essential: Many campgrounds fill quickly, particularly on weekends. At Lebanon-Cincinnati NE KOA, campers advise booking early: "Get your ideal site early during busy season," especially if you prefer specific amenities or location within the campground.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: For families with young children, look for campgrounds with dedicated play areas. At Olive Branch Campground, "There is a nice walking trail through the woods, a small pool, playground, and a pond for fishing," offering multiple activities without leaving the campground.

Safety considerations: Some campgrounds provide more contained environments for children to explore independently. At Cozy-Dale Campground, families appreciate that "the kids can fish run around there's a large playground and horseshoes and a basketball hoop," creating a secure environment for younger campers.

Educational opportunities: Several parks offer nature programs during peak season. East Fork State Park Campground features organized activities: "The nature center offered movies in the evening for guest," and "There are several miles of bike trails, bridle trails and hiking trails," providing options for different age groups and interests.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Full-hookup sites are available but limited at most public campgrounds. At East Fork State Park, "All are pet-friendly and electric. About 20 are FHU. While tent camping is permitted, certain sites are not recommended for it as there would be no place to pitch a tent."

Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds have uneven terrain requiring equipment for leveling. At Tucker's Landing, "Level concrete pad with nice views up the river. Staff were very helpful when we had issues with our truck and moved our truck camper with us," demonstrating that staff assistance may be available when needed.

Seasonal conditions: Winter camping requires preparation as not all facilities remain operational. Olive Branch Campground stays open year-round but notes that "Busy ample space between campers but most are not level. All hookups are in the middle of the site my standard cord was not long enough," requiring additional equipment during off-season stays.
