Most spots are 30 amp with a few 50 amp. I have a 38' fifth wheel and the spots are tight for it," noted one camper at a nearby state park. Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Nice little State Park

Tomlinson Run is a small state park situated in the northern panhandle of West Virginia nestled between eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Plenty of things to do there including but not limited to…. Mini golf, hiking trails, biking, swimming, fishing, paddle boats, parks for the kids, and of course the camping. The campsites here are mainly gravel pads with the exception being the asphalt handicapped spots (2). Most spots are 30 amp with a few 50 amp (new for 2021). The park also has a few primitive spots available and some yurts and cabins to rent. I have a 38’ fifth wheel and the spots are tight for it (even the couple pull thru). Campground facilities are clean but dated. They state new facilities are coming soon. The campground is at the top of a hill and the spots are wooded and shaded. I would consider the camping to be spaced generously (room to stretch out). They have a small camp store and information available. A breakfast is available during peak season for a small fee. They do have water and a dump station available (free for campers to use).

    Atwood Lake Park Campground

    Incredible!

The Atwood Lake Campground is a true gem in a beautiful area of eastern Ohio! We’ve visited the Atwood region many times in the past but have never camped - but after this visit we’ll be back for sure. The campground is relatively new, with the campground area being completely revamped beginning in 2017. There are two overnight camping areas with seasonal sites in a separate section; we stayed in “Camp H” which is the newest area. There is a huge bathhouse with two sets of men’s and women’s restrooms and shower facilities along with a very nice laundry area. Adjoining the bathhouse area is a beautiful pavilion and children’s playground - all of which overlooks Atwood Lake. The campsites are nicely spaced though if you’re in the inner loop as we were or even some of the outer ring sites you’ll be looking right into your neighbor’s site. All sites are FHU on level concrete pads and include a metal picnic table and fire ring. If needed there are two very well equipped dump stations if you prefer to use them instead of the sewer connection at your site. Many sites are on cul de sacs directly on the lake with docks and fishing areas adjacent to the campsites. Lots of hiking trails, paved bike paths, a swimming beach and restaurant are in a nearby area. We loved the campground and will return soon!

    Raccoon Creek State Park Campground

    Raccoon Creek Camping

This is a large state park offering electric only sites

The sites are set amounts the forest and there are several loops to choose from. Loop F is pet friendly. All sites are within walking distance to amenities

Amenities are quite run down but functional

Wildlife is beautiful and its a short ~10min drive to the beach area of Raccoon Creek lake.

Two (2) dump station spots and fresh water taps location throughout the park

NOTE: Many sites are not level, you will require blocks/timber to level out campers. Tent campers should choose their site using the photos on the state park site.

All sites have a paved car space.

    Salt Fork State Park Campground

    Great fall camping

Dated, but pretty clean bath\shower building with clothes washer and dryer ($2). Sites in C-loop are far enough apart to not feel too crammed together. Power pedestal has 20, 30 and 50 amp service. 30 amp worked fine. Lots of trails, allowing dogs on leash. True, other amenities are a drive of at least a couple miles to get to. ATT service was fine for streaming using ROKU and my phone as a hotspot. Paved, level pads, but not long enough for largest trailers. Check size if you have one. Sites at South end of loop get the most shade

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Very wooded campground

General: 50-site (all but six with electric hookups) campground plus two yurts and three cabins. Two sites are handicap accessible.

Site Quality: The sites have gravel pads (except the handicap-accessible ones which were paved). The sites were completely covered with leaves when we were there which made it challenging to determine where the actual (narrow) pad was. Sites appeared to be level. A fire ring and wooden picnic table complete the site.

Bathhouse: A little dated but clean. Two of the stall doors did not latch properly. Didn't use the shower so cannot comment but there was a sign indicating it took a while for the water to warm up.

Activities/Amenities: There is a small camper store, laundry, and a playground. In season, there is lake swimming and a boat dock. There is a fishing area, mini-golf and disc golf, and several short hiking trails. Unfortunately, since we arrived late afternoon and had to depart early the following day (and were camping off-season), we could not take advantage of any of these things. What we lose in activities, we gain in a quieter camping experience with fewer crowds, which is generally preferable for us!

    Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA

    KOA - Monthly Stay

Camping in a 33 ft travel trailer with slides. Verizon service is great. Wifi in extended parking doesn’t work well. The staff are helpful and polite. We are in the extended stay part of the campground which is quiet and slightly more secluded than the other spots.

    Big Arbs Campground

    Lots of Hills

The whole campground is on a hill. Most if not all seasonal sites. The area we stayed was mostly the party crowd and didnt seem to respect quiet time. There is a long list of rules most do not follow. And ownership takes no responsibility. We had to ask several times for a picnic table and fire ring.

    Salt Fork State Park Campground

    My Go-to Weekend Getaway

Saltfork is located about 45 minutes from my house, and makes for the perfect overnight trip.

There are tons of things to do, and lots of space in which to do them. My favorites includes hiking trails, and the lakeside dog park.

I stay in the primitive camping, it allows for more privacy and quiet. Although it also means you are relegated to the pit toilets. I personally don't mind them, but I know some campers will make the drive to the nicer shower house in the RV heavy side of the park.

Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, the fire rings in the primitive section need some work, as the grates are very old and small.

    Jefferson Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet little campground

Tucked away in southeastern Ohio is a gem of a park for camping, hiking and horse camping. Clean water, restrooms, playground, sand volleyball and basketball court. Dump station and 18 miles of multi use trails! Small lake for wading with the kiddos, fishing near the dam or skip rocks in the creek. But be sure to pack a picnic and relax and enjoy! Only a few electric sites available. Mostly flat shaded sites most perfect for tents or trailers.

Guide to Martins Ferry

Camping options around Martins Ferry, Ohio include several family-oriented campgrounds nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The Ohio Valley terrain features significant elevation changes between 600-1,200 feet, creating both scenic camping opportunities and challenging access roads. Winter temperatures typically range from 20-40°F, while summer months average 75-85°F with moderate humidity levels.

What to do

Lake activities: Austin Lake RV Park offers multiple water recreation options beyond standard swimming. "Has a playground in every section, well equipped cabins, a swimming area with inflatables, kayak, pontoon, and paddle boarding rentals, a bumper boat area, small lake where you can fish and boat," notes Linda R. about the Austin Lake RV Park & Cabins.

Wildlife viewing: The heavily wooded campgrounds provide excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. "We see deer almost every evening. There are a couple hiking trails nearby (Piatt Park and Raven's Rock) which have incredible rock formations in the gorges," reports Darla, who camped at Shadow Lake RV Resort during October.

Fishing: Multiple stocked ponds and small lakes allow for fishing without requiring a boat. "There are several ponds around the campground for fishing and bird watching. Be sure to keep an eye our for deer as you come into the park! We had to stop a few times for them to move out of the driveway," shares Kathryn P. about her experience at Zion Retreat & RV Park.

What campers like

Scenic hilltop settings: The eastern Ohio landscape provides elevated camping with panoramic views. "The views are amazing! If you love peace and quiet this is the place for you. All sites are amongst the very tall trees," writes Kathryn P. about her stay at Zion Retreat & RV Park.

Well-maintained facilities: Many campgrounds in the region prioritize cleanliness and upkeep. "Great: The pool & concession stand, beautifully maintained lawns and gravel campsites, modern hookups, good shower/laundry facilities, nice fire rings with built in grills, trash pickup service," reports Heath T. about Pine Cove Beach Club RV Resort.

Family-oriented activities: Structured activities keep children engaged throughout the day. "TONS of stuff to do here. Very big campground, all kinds of sites. Reserve early for Holiday Weekends as it fills up. Lots of seasonals. Inflatable slides and such in the lake, hiking trials, playgrounds, all sorts of stuff," explains Mathew H. from his experience at Austin Lake RV Park.

What you should know

Limited connectivity: Cell service throughout the Ohio Valley can be unreliable or non-existent. "No phone service at all, no matter the carrier. Be advised it will seem a little sketchy getting in. The road dead-ends into the campground and it is all downhill getting there," warns Mathew H. about Pine Cove Beach Club RV Resort.

Additional activity fees: Some campgrounds charge for amenities beyond the site fee. "Austin lake offers plenty of fun with the lake. Kayaking, inflatables, beach, but almost anything you want to do will cost you an additional charge. Need to use the bathhouse? Better take quarters...bc the showers are coin operated," cautions Terra B.

Steep entrance roads: The hilly terrain creates challenging access points to several campgrounds. "Make sure you have a good tow vehicle as there is a steep hill at the entrance/exit of the camp ground," advises Robert T. about Zion Retreat & RV Park.

Tips for camping with families

Off-peak benefits: Visiting during shoulder seasons provides a quieter experience with less crowding. "We came to Shadow Lake in October to camp for the month. To get here, you must drive through the rolling hills of Southern Ohio, which is absolutely gorgeous in October! The campground is beautiful and peaceful, especially at this time of year as most of the campers have either gone south, closed up or pulled out for the season," shares Darla about her fall stay.

Public vs. private considerations: Some campgrounds allow day-use visitors which affects privacy and amenity availability. "The Park is not exclusive Campers it is open to the public for a small fee! Super loud PA system throughout the whole park that wakes you up at 8am every morning like you are in prison!" warns Owen I. about Austin Lake RV Park.

Pre-booking activities: Popular summer weekend activities often fill up quickly and require advance planning. "Kayaks, paddle boards, jumps, slides. Name they had a blast!! I even enjoyed the overhead speaker announcements. Added an old time feel to the campground," notes tom S. about the structured activities at Austin Lake.

Tips from RVers

Seasonal considerations: Many RV parks in the region operate only during specific months. "I stayed here in the worse month possible for camping in ohio but the owner made it a great experience. They are very accommodating. Even though every thing was snowy and muddy I could tell this is a very well taken care of place," reports Blaine V. about Shadow Lake RV Resort.

Site spacing: RV sites at several campgrounds have limited separation between neighbors. "The sites are a bit close, think KOA close. This might be a turnoff if the campground was full. The weekend we stayed there were 8 total campers, lots of empty sites between campers," observes Kathryn P. about the spacing at Zion Retreat & RV Park.

Downhill access challenges: The elevation changes require proper vehicle capability for safe navigation. "Take your time and all will be just fine. Our rig is 39' & 16K. 4wd low helps, not cause you need 4wd just for the lower gears," advises Mathew H. regarding accessing Austin Lake RV Park.
