    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Nice park for Northwest Ohio

We rented a yurt as a local weekend escape. Our kids loved the yurt. It was nice with a little mini fridge and 4 double beds. Campground showers and bathrooms are clean. It is one of the only state parks in northwest Ohio, a beautiful little spot nestled in farmland of Ohio. The lake is nice for swimming and there are bike rentals which was fun as well. We did not use it, but there is a dog beach as well. Sites are crowed and close together.

Venture Out Resorts Arrowhead Lakes Resort

    Big rigs to tents

We stayed here for free for 10 days as a part of a promotion that came with the purchase of our rig. Not sure about normal pricing though, as this campground is owned by Venture Out Resorts and they are a timeshare company (we had to sit for a hour long "pitch" to get our free days). They have 50amp, full hookup, pull through sites (and we saw 40+ ft rigs there) to tent camping to cabin rentals. The campground was clean (shower houses always looked great) and grounds were maintained. Amenities include an indoor pool, hot tub and sauna (close at 10p), but we did not partake because it was so overridden by children, chlorine, and no open windows - didn't seem worth any effort whatsoever in the July heat. The amenities we did checkout (close nightly at 8p) included their new 18 hole mini golf course, small arcade (4 games and pinball was broken 😢), loaner bikes, and water toys (we liked the paddle bikes). The company recently bought the property, so you can see what they inherited vs what it will probably eventually be like based off their sister properties (they recently added the putt putt and a big jungle gym) so it could evolve more as time passes. Regardless, in its current state as active 30 somethings, we were pretty bored. No hiking, significant highway noise, yes a couple big ponds, but a truck stop and truck storage is behind both - so no views. Most of the campers we saw were elderly or had young kids. I'd say if you fall into a category where you want to sit beside your rig all day or want your kids entertained (playgrounds, kids programming - it was luau week so they had a Moana movie night and other kid activities), go on and book a longer stay. If you're only looking for a spot to stay overnight by the highway, do it! It is simple to pull in and have full hookups to take advantage of but a 10 day stay is too long if you're paying. Other things to know: Walmart, Aldi, Lowes, and several automotive chain stores are at max 5 min away, which made grabbing some needed supplies super easy. That said truck stop above was very convenient to get into to fuel up our rig too. Fun fact: Neil Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta and the Armstrong Air & Space Museum is also a max 5 min drive away if you want to get your inner astronaut fix.

    Van Buren State Park Campground

    Small and peaceful

We stayed one night on our way to IN. We’ve never been here before and wanted to check it off our list. It’s a small campground with one side as equestrian and the other side not. All sites had electric and water, no full hookup. There were only drop toilets and no showers. They were clean but I don’t think I’d want to do more than a weekend there. It had a nice playground for kids and plenty of trails to hike or go horseback riding. They also had a dog park and small wildflower garden. The check in cabin had ice and wood for sale but no store. Our site was really nice. The pads were recently paved and had a huge bumper at the end. The fire ring was nice and the site had plenty of space for tents.

    Indian Lake State Park Campground

    Lots of sites

Our pad was not level front to back so we had to adjust a little bit. The fire ring was nice but our picnic table was beat up. I went to move it and the seat pulled right off. We stayed on a Sunday night so it wasn’t packed. There are a ton of sites. Some had great shade and others didn’t have any at all. The bathrooms were flush toilets and they did have shower houses too. The camp store is really big and it’s right next to their pool. They have a dog park, place to dock your boat and a small beach. I would imagine this would be a pretty busy during the summer.

    Lake Loramie State Park Campground

Perfect retreat for the family or solo adventure

Relax on the waters edge in shear tranquility. Perfect beach for swimming, excellent trails for hiking, and awesome lake to boat. Multiple launch ramps provide ease and convenience. Rent a canoe or kayak and head out for some time alone or with your favorite person. The cabins are heated but pets are not allowed. Campground is huge as are the sites. Some are premium, there’s a few ADA and some lakeside making for a great view to enjoy your morning coffee.

Fun for kids during the day and sage at night.

We have stayed many times. Love being so close to the lake we can fish all the time. The beach is a bit of a walk from the campground but not to far. They offer canoe rentals, and bike rentals. The park also has beautiful cabins on the lake shore.

Guide to Grover Hill

Cabin rental options near Grover Hill, Ohio provide rustic to comfortable overnight stays within several state parks. Most Ohio state park cabins require reservations, with booking windows typically extending 3-6 months in advance. The region's cabin accommodations can serve as convenient base camps for exploring the flat, agricultural landscape of northwest Ohio.

What to do

Fishing access points: At Indian Lake State Park, the water offers multiple angling opportunities. "Indian lake, you can enjoy the beach, boating, swimming, fishing and relaxing," notes Angie B. The park features a lake with islands and coves ideal for fishing excursions.

Paddling opportunities: The lakes provide calm waters for various paddle sports. At Harrison Lake State Park, rentals make water access easy. "The lake is nice for swimming and there are bike rentals which was fun as well," states Sherrie W. Consider bringing personal flotation devices as rentals may not include them.

Walking trails: Several parks feature short hiking paths around their lakes. "There are a lot of activities and trails," mentions Brad H. about Indian Lake State Park. Trail conditions vary seasonally, with spring often bringing muddy sections after rain.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many visitors appreciate the well-maintained shower buildings at Grand Lake St. Marys State Park. "Family oriented, new pool, splash pad for kids, great playground area. Full hookups and very well kept clean campground," reports Carol T. Cabin guests can use these same shower facilities.

Nearby attractions: The location provides access to regional points of interest. "Neil Armstrong was born in nearby Wapakoneta so there are some sights to see there, and the towns of Celina and one other are cute too," explains Megan M. Cabin stays can serve as comfortable base camps for day trips.

Spacious sites: Some parks offer more room between cabins and campsites. "Large spacious sites with cement or paved spots," writes Ashleigh D. about Grand Lake St. Marys. This extra space can be particularly valuable for families with children or those planning to spend time outdoors.

What you should know

Water quality concerns: Several lakes in the region experience seasonal algae issues. "This lake is notorious for having algae blooms that prohibit swimming," notes a Grand Lake St. Marys visitor. Check with park offices about current water conditions before planning water activities.

Reservation requirements: All cabins require advance booking, with limited availability during peak seasons. At Van Buren State Park, "You must reserve a spot by phone or online only, no walk ins. I made my reservation while standing at the visitor cabin," shares John P.

Limited privacy: Many cabin areas have minimal separation between units. "The campground had cut down most of the tree coverage, and it was like we were camping with our neighbors," explains Mandi B. about Indian Lake. Consider this when selecting a cabin for longer stays.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several parks feature play equipment near cabin areas. At Lake Loramie State Park, "The kids loved the playground and had fun at the Fun Field Day activities!" according to Shanda A. These recreational facilities can provide entertainment options during downtime.

Swimming options: Pools and beaches offer water recreation alternatives. "The beach is a bit of a walk from the campground but not too far. They offer canoe rentals, and bike rentals," explains Ashley W. about Lake Loramie State Park. Many parks also have designated swimming areas with varying amenities.

Educational programs: Seasonal naturalist programs can enhance family stays. "We asked on Friday evening where the Saturday morning naturalist paddle would be," mentions a Lake Loramie visitor, highlighting the availability of guided activities. Check with park offices upon arrival for current program schedules.

Tips from RVers

Hookup access: Different parks offer varying levels of amenities for RV travelers. At Wapakoneta KOA, "Great place to stop and recover from the road! Close to I75, level sites, laundry, showers, two dog areas and a store and restaurant," reports Carol W. This can be relevant for travelers using cabins as base camps while traveling with RVs.

Supply availability: Nearby towns provide access to necessities. "Walmart, Aldi, Lowes, and several automotive chain stores are at max 5 min away, which made grabbing some needed supplies super easy," shares a reviewer about Wapakoneta's amenities. This proximity to services can reduce the need to pack every supply.

Site features: Concrete pads and other site improvements can affect comfort levels. "Nice site, easy to access, and still very quiet despite being near busy areas," mentions Lauren R. about Twin Lakes Park. These details can make significant differences in usability during wet weather.
