What to do
Water activities at Alum Creek State Park: Cabins near the park provide access to the 3,387-acre reservoir. "We had an absolute blast at the campsite! We stayed in L and the kids loved being close to the water. The campground beach is an absolute must and we even got close to wildlife (aka some pesky raccoons)," shares one visitor to Alum Creek State Park Campground.
Hiking at Tar Hollow State Park: Situated 50 miles south of Groveport, the park features several cabin options and over 16 miles of trails. A camper notes: "Beautiful, secluded group camping. Shelter and pit bathrooms. Wide open space for lots of campers. Nice access to trails. Beach area is clean & small little lake. Nature center & lots of activities near the camp store," according to a visitor at Tar Hollow State Park Campground.
Fishing at Delaware State Park: The lake offers good fishing opportunities near cabin accommodations. "This state park spans over 2,000 acres and is just north of the cute Ohio town of Delaware. The campground was really nice and quiet when we stayed there which was during the week and in the spring and not very crowded," explains a camper at Delaware State Park Campground.
What campers like
Privacy at Delaware State Park: The campground layout provides more seclusion than many other cabin options near Groveport. "The 'pod' layout of the campground made for large campsites (some sites are over 90 feet in length and well suited for large RV's) with good separation between sites," notes a camper. Another adds, "This is probably our favourite state park we have been to thus far. The best thing about this campground is the fact that all the sites have privacy."
Cabins at Campbell Cove: Located an hour's drive from Groveport, these cabins offer comfort with amenities. "We loved the location of Campbell Coves to Old Man's Cave and hiking trails. We do a family trip to the area every fall and this will be our go-to location. We've already booked for fall 2021. We stayed in one of the rustic cabins," reports a visitor to Campbell Cove Camping.
Amenities at Cross Creek: The campground provides full-service cabin options. "This is a RV resort close to a lake with a lot of seasonal campers. It is busy on the weekend but was very quiet during the week. The sites are close, but not unreasonably close. Good mix of pull through and back in and is big rig friendly. Plenty to do for the kids," notes a visitor to Cross Creek Camping Resort.
What you should know
Limited availability: Many cabin rentals require advance booking, especially during peak season. At Jackson Lake Park, "I was pretty impressed with the park. Lots of fun for kids with the swimming pond and arcade. As a moto camper, we really lucked out with a flat plot and didn't have anyone in the spots next to us," reports one visitor to Jackson Lake Park.
Bathroom facilities vary: Some cabin locations have better facilities than others. "The bathrooms were VERY far from the camp area (the one in the arcade room was close but it was closed after 11pm) and the bathrooms they did have only typically had one working stall," notes a Jackson Lake Park camper.
Seasonal operations: Several cabin providers near Groveport close during winter. "We have already booked our next visit here! To start, the staff are absolutely amazing and so kind. We stayed at site 61 and the lake view is perfect. Bring your hammock because there are plenty of trees!" says a Campbell Cove visitor.
Tips for camping with families
Swimming options: Look for cabins near water features for cooling off in summer months. "Tar Hollow State Park sits adjacent to the State Forest, in a similar setup to Scioto Trail and Lake Hope. The lake has a sand beach and designated swim area. It is blocked off from the rest of the lake by a wooden dock from which you are able to shallow dive," reports a visitor.
Kid-friendly activities: Many cabin sites include playgrounds and recreation areas. "This is a small, family owned campground that is perfect for families with kids of all ages! Beautiful creek that runs along side some nice deep sites! Two pools, tons of activities! Staff is wonderful," explains a visitor at Lazy River at Granville.
Cabin selection for families: Choose cabins with enough sleeping capacity and nearby amenities. "We spent a weekend here with two other families (9 kids total) and had a wonderful time! The kids loved the swimming pools and splash pads, the awesome play ground and lots of playing in the creek," notes a Lazy River at Granville visitor.
Tips from RVers
Full hookup options: Some cabin locations also offer RV sites with utilities. "We enjoyed a full hookup site. The spots aren't very spacious but there's lots of trees nearby and an easy walk to get to Old Man's Cave. We enjoyed swimming in the pool," shares an Hocking Hills State Park Campground visitor about the mixed cabin/RV camping area.
Seasonal considerations: RVers with cabins note the importance of seasonal planning. "We stayed in the walk-in family campground, not the main campground. The sites are mostly far apart from one another and the area is fairly dense woods leaving you feeling a peaceful solitude," explains a Hocking Hills State Park camper.
Site selection: Research specific cabin and RV site details before booking. "The sites weren't very level and our leveling system has the front wheels off the ground. Many full time units here beautiful patios and decor. Staff is nice and friendly," reports a Cross Creek Camping Resort visitor.
