Stonelick Lake State Park sits at 895 feet elevation with average summer temperatures of 85°F. The park's 500-acre lake prohibits motorized boats, creating protected waters for paddling sports and fishing. Campgrounds near Goshen offer varied terrain with a mix of wooded sites and open meadows, most operating from April through October when Ohio weather is most favorable for outdoor recreation.
What to do
Kayaking and canoeing on Little Miami River: Boat rentals available at Morgan's Canoe and Outdoor Adventure where visitors can explore the scenic waterway. "Morgan's is amazing! They have been around for a few generations and provide canoeing, rafting, and kayaking at different trip lengths for a great price," notes Carolyn M. The rental facility provides transportation back to your campsite after river trips.
Bicycling on paved trails: The Little Miami Bike Trail connects to several camping areas and offers miles of paved surfaces. "Close to the Little Miami Bike Trail this was easy to walk on with my friend and her two little ones. The trail was paved which was a huge help for those of us who were extra short," shares Kenpocentaur K.
Swimming options: Cowan Lake State Park Campground offers designated swimming areas during summer months. "This is a great park in southern Ohio, easy to reach, 20 minutes off the interstate 275," writes Craig C. Most swimming areas are open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with some beaches closing at dusk.
Triathlon participation: Morgan's Riverside Campground & Cabins hosts an annual triathlon event in early May. "We stayed in early May, which is usually when they do their Triathlon. The Army Corps of Engineers decided to let water out of the dam up river, so it was flooded for a couple days," reports Amanda S.
What campers like
Large, well-spaced campsites: Campers consistently mention the generous site dimensions at many campgrounds. "The tent sites which I explored on my walks are huge. A great camp site to have a bunch of friends meet up and camp at as it is so close to Cincinnati," notes Kenpocentaur K. about Morgan's Canoe and Outdoor Adventures.
Clean, well-maintained facilities: Beechwood Acres Camping Resort receives high marks for cleanliness. "The pool is heated and large enough for everyone to spread out. There are 5 showers and a set of bathrooms close by the pool. All of which were VERY clean," writes Amy H.
Kid-friendly atmosphere: "We have camped here several times in the last year. It is small enough to let my kids roam a bit on thier bikes and feel comfortable not having eyes on them 24/7. Quiet and Clean," says Jason L. about Stonelick State Park, highlighting the family-friendly layout.
Proximity to attractions: Most campgrounds are within 20-30 minutes of Cincinnati attractions. "Despite the rain and the wind we had a great time! Our spot was right next to a small Pollinator trail that lead to the water. My little ones had a blast riding their scooters around the round about," reports Jess H.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds operate April through October. "Season: April 1 to October 31" is listed for Stonelick State Park Campground, though some like Winton Woods remain open year-round.
Reservation requirements: Holiday weekends require advance planning. "Price:$60.00/night for 2 Adults and up to 3 kids(3-16 years of age) 2-night minimum required for weekends and 3-night required for holiday weekends," explains Kenpocentaur K.
Noise considerations: River-adjacent campsites may experience higher noise levels. "The noise was not the greatest. They assured us that there was a night person who monitored noise and partying, and there were signs everywhere saying that quiet hours started at 10, but a group of loud, drunk men right on the river were allowed to yell and make a ruckus until at least 2am," reports Megan M.
Terrain and site conditions: "Our site was muddy but I guess that's to be expected when you are next to the river," notes Megan M. about riverside camping areas, highlighting the need for proper footwear and equipment during wet periods.
Tips for camping with families
Try tent camping at Stonelick Lake: The protected environment makes it beginner-friendly. "Despite the rain and the wind we had a great time! Our spot was right next to a small Pollinator trail that lead to the water. My little ones had a blast riding their scooters around the round about," shares Jess H.
Consider a cabin for mixed-weather trips: Lebanon-Cincinnati NE KOA offers cabins with some amenities. "The adorable cabin fulfilled my tiny home dreams and camping craving! The cozy cabin had a queen bed, twin bunks and a sofa that made out to a full size sleeper. Kitchen included a fridge, sink and single cup coffee maker," explains Becky C.
Look for educational opportunities: "I loved the informational boxes and tags that they had on the trees or plants. This is helpful if you have little ones with you or if you are like me and just like to learn about the animals/plants on the trail," reports Kenpocentaur K.
Book glamping options for newcomers: Luxury glamping in Goshen, Ohio provides an easier transition for first-time campers. "This campground had everything we were looking for in a small weekend getaway. The wifi wasn't working while we were there but it just gave us more time to spend together," notes Amy H.
Tips from RVers
Choose your site based on shade needs: "There was significant variety in the types of sites: some were quite wooded while others were full sun. Some sites were much larger than others," explains Kim H. about Cowan Lake State Park Campground.
Watch for site levelness: "We camped at site 35 and it was very slopey, our levelers only helped a little," warns Kara S. about Stonelick State Park, suggesting RVers should inquire about site grade when making reservations.
Full hookup availability varies: "Electric site only, full service all full. A bit rough getting RV setup, but pad is fairly level, so easily setup to use slides. Site 60, 46 feet max length, ours 39," reports Johnothan R., highlighting the need to confirm hookup options before arrival.
Internet access considerations: "Internet here on t-moble 5G home is 90Mbps down and 6 to 20Mbps up. Verizon on cellphone, only 10Mbs down, 1-3Mbps up. ATT cellphones are similar to Verizon," shares Johnothan R., providing useful connectivity information for remote workers.
