Cozy cabin cured my camping craving!

The adorable cabin fulfilled my tiny home dreams and camping craving! The cozy cabin had a queen bed, twin bunks and a sofa that made out to a full size sleeper. Kitchen included a fridge, sink and single cup coffee maker. Coffee k cups were provided in a few different varieties as well as sugar and creamer packs. Bathroom had tub/shower, clothesline to dry swim suits or hand-washed clothes, toilet, sand sink vanity. Bedding and towels were provided and were crisp, clean white. WiFi was a bonus and although it wasn’t the fastest it was very useful when looking up nearby activities. Our cabin had a grill, an outdoor table with four chairs, a swing and a fire pit which we enjoyed our last night there. Staff was friendly and helpful. There were laundry facilities within the park and lots of activities but we didn’t take advantage of any of that during our brief stay. Overall, we were very pleased and would gladly stay again!

    Governor Bebb MetroPark Campground

Roughing it by a creek and a pioneer village

Basic car tent camping at several spots along a creek wIth picnic tables and fire rings (no hookups, portolet toilets, no showers.) There is a rustic scout cabin/group lodge reservable for scout, etc. groups. The park features a pioneer village with log cabins, including a blacksmith forge, etc. that have been moved to the site.

    Winton Woods Campground

Love this campground for a weekend rendezvous!

Winton Woods campground has spacious paved RV spaces with full hook-ups, fire ring, and picnic table. They also have cabin and tent camping. The location is located on the lake with access to put in a kayak or canoe. The bathrooms are clean, with private combined shower/dressing stalls. There is a playground for children, and a camp store that sells firewood and supplies. I love the tall pines on the property. They made me feel like I was out west. The campground is also near paved and unpaved trails in the park that surround more of the lake which allows for walking/running/hiking and bicycling, fishing, small craft boating, with small craft boat rentals available at the marina. The park also allows for horseback riding, and a small water park for children in the summer.

    Winton Woods Campground

Great county park in a beautiful setting!

This is a great county park! It has a nice “campground” feel set in a large pine trees and wide sites but has 50-amp full hook-up sites. The campground is set in Winton Woods County Park which is about 20 minutes from downtown Cincinnati.

There are 123 campsites including RV sites, tent pads, and camping cabins. Most RV sites are back-in but there are 12 pull-thru sites. There is a myriad of sites here from 50-amp full hook-up with paved pads and patios to 30-amp gravel sites. Sites have fire pits, picnic tables. Campsites in the front section (1F – 25F and 1R – 12R) are big rig-friendly with paved roads wide enough to easily maneuver. All utilities worked accordingly and were well-placed in the site. Our 4G Verizon phone got good reception and we were able to get plenty of antenna television channels. The online reservation system is easy to use and gives you an array of sites/cabins to choose from. Be aware that lots of people use this park on the weekends so it can get quiet busy.

There are lots of amenities at this park. Within walking distance of the campground is Winton Woods Lake which has a harbor with boathouse, snack bar, boat rentals and playgrounds. There are miles of paved and rustic hiking trails. There is a camp store, dump station, laundry, restrooms/shower house, boat/kayak launch, and fishing access. Located in the park is a golf course and horseback riding center.

You are within a few miles of everything … grocery, gas/diesel, restaurants, and plenty of shopping. The park is close to I-275 and I-75 making for easy access to major interstates. One place you should not miss is Jungle Jims international grocery and market. This totally eclectic, sprawling "grocery store" has so much to offer. They pride themselves on providing unique foods from all over the world. I could spend hours in this store perusing the isles of which are sectioned off into country and region. There are entire sections on Indian foods, wines, cheeses that you have never heard of, and tanks with live fish ready for the filleting. Also within close proximity is Greaters -one of the country's best ice cream shops (according to Food and Wine). Just down the street is a new person favorite sandwich shop called Izzy's which is famous for their corned beef and delicious potato pancakes.

Loved this park because you have a very nice campsite with 50-amp full hook-up site with lots to do in the area. Our site was level and the roads were easy to navigate in our motorhome. The paved trail around the lake was great for walking/jogging and perfect for launching our kayaks.

We would definitely stay here again.

    Paint Creek State Park Campground

    Premium sites are

We paid extra to have a "Premium" site, which meant we got a deck. That deck held our picnic table,  but there was no room to put our camping chairs. And though we were close to the lake, you could not see it through the trees. We could barely get out of our trailer and into the driveway without falling into a ravine. The fire pit had to be put on the back side of our trailer next to the road as that was the only spot it could fit. We were told to check out other sites in case we want to come back. Ha. The staff knew no one who had ever been here would ever take this site! But... we won't need to check out other sites as we'll never come back.

    Cowan Lake State Park Campground

    Just plain nice

Although it’s quite a bit off the main road, it was a nice place to stay. Gate was manned when we arrived just before 8:00 pm. Clerk told us to book online once we picked our spot, as she had just closed the register. We just chose an open spot that was level as we could see in the dark. Weary from a day of travel, we put our heads on the pillow and were fast asleep. Shortly after 9 we heard several rounds of gun shots; that was alarming because it was well after sunset. All in all it was a nice spot with electric only. Several gray water dumps were situated throughout the campground. Dumpsters were full from I’m sure what was a busy weekend of fall camping. The lake was beautiful with ability to rent kayaks. Frisbee golf was onsite too. Commissary for ice and basic sundries, with playground nearby. We didn’t visit the bathhouse, so I’m unsure of it’s condition. Tenant sites with no electricity were down by the lake. Cabin rentals were in a separate spot, off the lake. All in all, in was a nice place with lots of things to do. More of a destination park, for sure.

    Dayton KOA Holiday

Beautiful setting, lots of trees and a steam that runs through it.

We stayed in a small cabin with a swing on the porch but there are many lodging choices. A stream ran behind the cabin. It has a pool and lots of kids activities. Gravel roads aren’t great for small kids learning to ride bikes but ok for older kids and adults.

    Kiser Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet Park

This park is know for the lake that is kayak and canoe friendly since it doesn’t allow any kind of boat with a motor. It also features a beach , 2 playgrounds and several hiking trails. Just be careful if you hike with dogs since some trails intersect with a nature preserve which doesn’t allow pets.

The campground itself has 20 electric sites , 56 primitive sites and 4 camper cabins. All the electric sites are pull through and all sites have a fire pit but only the electric sites come with picnic tables.

Due to off season and COVID the camp store is closed and there is no camper host or park office staff around.

We did notice lots of downed trees on the poorly marked hiking trails. Some trails just started but no maps were around and no trails were blazed. It was hard to tell where we were headed or how long a trail was. I tried using the new Detour app and it wasn’t very accurate for this park.

We did have good Verizon cell coverage.

    Dayton KOA Holiday

    Nice KOA

A nice KOA, with fire pit areas and picnic areas. Each state has a picnic table and the gravel site that we had was level. There is a group yurt for rent a nice little store, and quite a few cabins as well as gazebos and other gathering areas. Wi-fi is horrible even with a booster and sketchy over the air channels.

Guide to Centerville

Cabin camping near Centerville, Ohio provides rustic and comfortable accommodations throughout the year. Located in southwestern Ohio with an average elevation of 1,060 feet, the area experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 74°F and winters dipping to 34°F. Most cabin sites in this region sit near the Little Miami River watershed, providing access to fishing and water activities.

What to do

Kayaking on Little Miami River: Morgan's Riverside Campground offers direct river access with rental options. "We stayed in early May, which is usually when they do their Triathlon. The Army Corps of Engineers decided to let water out of the dam up river, so it was flooded for a couple days but the campsites are sooo large and spread out from each other," notes Amanda S.

Hiking nearby trails: Olive Branch Campground features wooded walking paths with educational components. "There is a nice walking trail through the woods, a small pool, playground, and a pond for fishing. The campground was only about three miles from a trailhead on the Little Miami Scenic Trail," reports Cindy B.

Air museum exploration: Wright-Patterson FamCamp provides military families access to nearby attractions. "There is a lot to do and visit on and off post. Unfortunately the Air Museum was closed because of the budget shut down but all other services were available," mentions Byron S.

Cycling access: Several campgrounds connect to the Little Miami Bike Trail. "This campground is shady, quiet with plenty to do in the surrounding area. We love to camp here because it is very close to the Little Miami River Scenic Trail. We can catch the trail at the Mathers Mill trailhead and ride either north or south," shares a Olive Branch camper.

What campers like

Spacious riverside sites: Morgan's Riverside Campground & Cabins offers large camping areas along the water. "The wooded sites are very large even the small ones with mature trees. So close to everything Cincinnati has to offer but beautiful scenic river views," explains Janine.

Campground amenities: Families appreciate the recreational facilities at various locations. "There is a field with bleachers for ball games, and a nice fenced in dog park," notes a visitor at Wright-Patterson FamCamp.

Private bathroom facilities: Lebanon-Cincinnati NE KOA receives praise for its facilities. "The bathrooms are amazing and private. The tent site we had was huge and there were actually trees for our suspended tent and hammocks," shares Brian B.

Peaceful settings: Many cabins offer quiet surroundings away from urban areas. "You will enjoy your stay and the staff is wonderful," comments a KOA visitor, while another notes, "for a KOA this place was very well appointed. Spacious tree-filled lots. Nice folks too."

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most cabin rentals operate year-round, though amenities may be reduced in winter. "Granted, we visited in late March, and they may not have been at peak season form. But the entry road is one lane. If you meet another vehicle someone has to back up," reports a Lebanon-Cincinnati KOA visitor.

Facility maintenance varies: Dayton KOA Holiday receives mixed reviews about cleanliness. "Cabin 701- We just returned home after a weekend of camping at Dayton KOA. Overall the programming and common facilities were nice. However once arriving we were very unhappy with the cleanliness of the cabin," reports one visitor, while others found "excellent rural setting. One of the nicer KOAs."

Noise levels: Some riverside campgrounds experience evening activity. "The noise was not the greatest. They assured us that there was a night person who monitored noise and partying, and there were signs everywhere saying that quiet hours started at 10, but a group of loud, drunk men right on the river were allowed to yell and make a ruckus until at least 2am," notes a Morgan's Riverside visitor.

Reservation requirements: Most cabin sites require advance booking with deposits. "The campground was completely full but still quiet and peaceful. The staff are amazing," mentions a KOA camper.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Cowan Lake State Park Campground offers family-friendly recreation areas. "The campground was filled with parents and kids riding bikes, playing, and having fun. Nobody was out of control or obnoxious. Plenty of dogs were present," notes Kim H.

Safety considerations: Sites near water require extra supervision. "We were a little nervous as the cabin is so close the river. This is part of the charm but when you have a 3 year old in your group then it is smart to keep an extra sharp eye on the kiddo as the river is a huge draw," advises a Morgan's visitor.

Educational opportunities: Several parks provide nature programming. "I loved the informational boxes and tags that they had on the trees or plants. This is helpful if you have little ones with you or if you are like me and just like to learn about the animals/plants on the trail," shares a visitor.

Swimming options: Multiple campgrounds feature pools or designated swim areas. "There is a pool, laundry room and large field with a playground and basketball court," notes a visitor at Olive Branch Campground.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Stonelick State Park Campground has varied terrain. "We camped at site 35 and it was very slopey, our levelers only helped a little," reports Kara S., while another visitor notes, "There are a number of good sites, but some with a significant slope that leveling would be an issue."

Utility connections: Check hookup locations before setup. "All hookups are in the middle of the site my standard cord was not long enough. Water pressure very good, wifi but they want no streaming? 50 amp service was adequate," shares an Olive Branch camper.

Road conditions: Internal campground roads vary in maintenance. "The roads in the campground need grading. Lots of holes and ruts," notes a Lebanon-Cincinnati KOA visitor.

Cellular and internet access: Service varies by location. "I use Starlink and T-mobile 5G. The T-Mobile seems to be working best here. The cell booster I have made it go from 'good' to 'excellent'," reports a visitor at Wilmington RV Resort.
