Cozy cabin cured my camping craving!

The adorable cabin fulfilled my tiny home dreams and camping craving! The cozy cabin had a queen bed, twin bunks and a sofa that made out to a full size sleeper. Kitchen included a fridge, sink and single cup coffee maker. Coffee k cups were provided in a few different varieties as well as sugar and creamer packs. Bathroom had tub/shower, clothesline to dry swim suits or hand-washed clothes, toilet, sand sink vanity. Bedding and towels were provided and were crisp, clean white. WiFi was a bonus and although it wasn’t the fastest it was very useful when looking up nearby activities. Our cabin had a grill, an outdoor table with four chairs, a swing and a fire pit which we enjoyed our last night there. Staff was friendly and helpful. There were laundry facilities within the park and lots of activities but we didn’t take advantage of any of that during our brief stay. Overall, we were very pleased and would gladly stay again!

      Paint Creek State Park Campground

      Premium sites are

We paid extra to have a "Premium" site, which meant we got a deck. That deck held our picnic table,  but there was no room to put our camping chairs. And though we were close to the lake, you could not see it through the trees. We could barely get out of our trailer and into the driveway without falling into a ravine. The fire pit had to be put on the back side of our trailer next to the road as that was the only spot it could fit. We were told to check out other sites in case we want to come back. Ha. The staff knew no one who had ever been here would ever take this site! But... we won't need to check out other sites as we'll never come back.

      Cowan Lake State Park Campground

      Just plain nice

Although it’s quite a bit off the main road, it was a nice place to stay. Gate was manned when we arrived just before 8:00 pm. Clerk told us to book online once we picked our spot, as she had just closed the register. We just chose an open spot that was level as we could see in the dark. Weary from a day of travel, we put our heads on the pillow and were fast asleep. Shortly after 9 we heard several rounds of gun shots; that was alarming because it was well after sunset. All in all it was a nice spot with electric only. Several gray water dumps were situated throughout the campground. Dumpsters were full from I’m sure what was a busy weekend of fall camping. The lake was beautiful with ability to rent kayaks. Frisbee golf was onsite too. Commissary for ice and basic sundries, with playground nearby. We didn’t visit the bathhouse, so I’m unsure of it’s condition. Tenant sites with no electricity were down by the lake. Cabin rentals were in a separate spot, off the lake. All in all, in was a nice place with lots of things to do. More of a destination park, for sure.

      Dayton KOA Holiday

Beautiful setting, lots of trees and a steam that runs through it.

We stayed in a small cabin with a swing on the porch but there are many lodging choices. A stream ran behind the cabin. It has a pool and lots of kids activities. Gravel roads aren’t great for small kids learning to ride bikes but ok for older kids and adults.

      Kiser Lake State Park Campground

      Quiet Park

This park is know for the lake that is kayak and canoe friendly since it doesn’t allow any kind of boat with a motor. It also features a beach , 2 playgrounds and several hiking trails. Just be careful if you hike with dogs since some trails intersect with a nature preserve which doesn’t allow pets.

The campground itself has 20 electric sites , 56 primitive sites and 4 camper cabins. All the electric sites are pull through and all sites have a fire pit but only the electric sites come with picnic tables.

Due to off season and COVID the camp store is closed and there is no camper host or park office staff around.

We did notice lots of downed trees on the poorly marked hiking trails. Some trails just started but no maps were around and no trails were blazed. It was hard to tell where we were headed or how long a trail was. I tried using the new Detour app and it wasn’t very accurate for this park.

We did have good Verizon cell coverage.

      Dayton KOA Holiday

      Nice KOA

A nice KOA, with fire pit areas and picnic areas. Each state has a picnic table and the gravel site that we had was level. There is a group yurt for rent a nice little store, and quite a few cabins as well as gazebos and other gathering areas. Wi-fi is horrible even with a booster and sketchy over the air channels.

      Really Well Done

There are cabins, campsites in trees, campsites that aren’t. There’s a nice Mixture of available sites. All the employees are very nice and helpful. They really work hard to maintain the site. The pool is nice. There is a nice play area for kids. They have a short path in the woods which is a nice little loop. Great location with lots to do!

      Buck Creek State Park Campground

      Great quiet site

A well manicured campground just outside Dayton, easy to get to, back in pavement site with 30A electric, picnic table and fire pit. Plenty of potable water spigots around, just not at the site. Dump station near the entrance of the campground. Walking trails along the lake well cared for. Plenty of activity with playground and an outdoor theater. Plenty of water-front pebble beach for enjoyment in the summer. Close to the campground is the marina with a restaurant , but won’t open til Memorial Day.

Addendum: July 2021 - was speaking with a number of people who have been here and they suggest not going during the summer. There is a large influx of rowdy locals who don't quite respect the peace and quiet many of us like.

      Cowan Lake State Park Campground

Full Moon night paddle on the Lake

Cowan Lake State Park - A friend and I were able to kayak on the lake the night of a Friday the 13th moon. It was beautiful. Sadly, no pictures as I do not have a water proof camera. The next day we also went out for another paddle under the bright sun.  The boat ramp and parking lot is easy to use and has a good layout.  They do have some tent sites close to the boat ramp area and you can see the lake from those tent sites.

Our campsite did not have any trees but they have planted a lot of new trees. I assume this due the previous trees having to be cut down due to Emerald Ash borer damage. Our campsite didn't have any shade but others did so you really have to pick wisely.

The trails here are easy and short.  I loved the informational boxes and tags that they had on the trees or plants.  This is helpful if you have little ones with you or if you are like me and just like to learn about the animals/plants on the trail.

The park also had a lending library and walking stick lending program. I thought these were simple but memorable features for this park.

Our campsite was close to two different bathroom structures.  One right behind our site was toilets only. This did mean that sometimes folks would walk on the edge or through the camp site at times.  The other bathroom structure was further down the road and it had both toilets and showers.  The larger bathroom had an ADA shower in it as well.

The camp store was well stocked and you could rent bikes from the store. These bikes were often all over the campground so be extra careful when driving in the park.  They do have the orange flag but as they are low to the ground it is hard to see them at times.

The cabins here have both a fire ring and grill. This isn't the case at all Ohio State parks so it was a nice surprise.  They also have a porch that is screened in with a view of the lake. You are not able to walk down to the lake from the cabin but it is a lovely view.

For those who want to "Walk-On" camp please take a look at the photo of the neon yellow paper as how the park approaches this will be different in the future.

**Not all photos or videos uploading so some information may be missing. I will try to upload again later.

    Guide to Cedarville

Cabin accommodations near Cedarville, Ohio range from basic to deluxe structures across several parks and private campgrounds within a 45-minute drive radius. The area sits at approximately 1,050 feet elevation with a humid continental climate featuring four distinct seasons. Winter temperatures regularly drop below freezing, affecting seasonal availability of certain cabin facilities from November through March.

    What to do

Hiking trail access: At Buck Creek State Park Campground, cabin guests can explore hiking paths directly from the camping area. "One of my favorites in this area... my sons love camping here for the trails and large areas to ride their bikes," notes camper Buck B.

Fishing opportunities: The cabins at Cowan Lake State Park Campground provide good access to crappie fishing in early May. According to Renée C., there's "great crappie fishing in early May just steep cliffs to get down to the water. There is a marina nearby where you can rent a John boat for pretty cheap too."

Evening programming: Cabins at Buck Creek State Park include access to organized night activities during summer weekends. Melissa M. shares: "Had a 4 day 3 night long weekend. Camp host on I think lot 71 or there about were great at keeping the activities going. Every night there was a movie and you could buy root beer floats for $1!"

    What campers like

Private cabin layout: Cabin groups at Cowan Lake State Park are arranged in cul-de-sac patterns for privacy and social atmosphere. "Nice cul-de-sac areas for groups with areas for kids to play. Ground is pretty level so bringing a bike for kids to ride on is nice," reports Renée C.

Bathroom renovations: Stonelick State Park Campground has updated their bathroom facilities serving cabin areas. Craig C. confirms, "Bath house is clean and modern. There are a number of good sites, but some with a significant slope that leveling would be an issue."

Technology access: Lebanon-Cincinnati NE KOA cabins come equipped with WiFi. One visitor, Becky C., explains: "WiFi was a bonus and although it wasn't the fastest it was very useful when looking up nearby activities."

    What you should know

Maintenance variation: Cabin conditions vary widely between parks and even within the same facility. At Cowan Lake, Renée C. notes, "The cabins are not in the best of shape. Finding mouse traps and some maintenance within the cabin that should have been done was concerning with a toddler."

Reservation systems: Many campgrounds now use digital-only booking. Mike & Deb L. from Buck Creek State Park Campground advise, "Must reserve online as they are still doing everything virtual."

Kitchen provisions: Lebanon-Cincinnati NE KOA deluxe cabins include kitchen amenities not found in basic units. "Kitchen included a fridge, sink and single cup coffee maker. Coffee k cups were provided in a few different varieties as well as sugar and creamer packs," reports Becky C.

    Tips for camping with families

Cabin-specific playgrounds: Facilities near cabins vary by location. Cowan Lake State Park offers family-friendly layouts. "There is a playground in walking distance too," notes Renée C.

Activity planning: Olive Branch Campground cabin areas are situated near recreational facilities appropriate for multiple age groups. Cindy B. recommends: "There is a nice walking trail through the woods, a small pool, playground, and a pond for fishing... the campground was very calm and the other campers were very respectful."

Weather preparedness: Spring cabin camping requires flexibility due to variable conditions. "Despite the rain and the wind we had a great time!" shares Jess H. at Stonelick State Park. "Our spot was right next to a small Pollinator trail that lead to the water. My little ones had a blast riding their scooters around the round about."

    Tips from RVers

Seasonal availability: Dayton KOA Holiday cabins operate from April through November only. Jenifer K. advises, "We just stopped in for the night. We paid $77 for a pull through with full hookups and a picnic table. The grounds are sprawling and the staff is friendly."

Site leveling: Many cabin sites are not level and require adjustment for comfort. Craig C. at Stonelick State Park shares, "There are a number of good sites, but some with a significant slope that leveling would be an issue."

Electrical service: Olive Branch Campground provides full utility connections for RV-style cabins. As Dave B. notes, "Very well kept campground with a lot of shade trees. Good separation of seasonal and overnight campers. Pull through and back ins available with full hookups."
