What to do
Fishing at multiple access points: Buck Creek State Park Campground offers shoreline fishing with easy access to the reservoir. "The reservoir seems like the big draw for this park," notes one visitor, while another mentions that "We also used the camper beach but to the left of it to launch our kayaks. Which was nice because you could back up to the pathway and park. Then drag your kayak down a short trail to the water."
Hiking nearby trails: Wright-Patterson FamCamp provides access to woodland trails for day hikes. "There are many sites with hookups for RV's, an area for RVs that dont need hookups, basic tent sites, and also a number of camper cabins by the lake. Families or adults can enjoy staying at the campground for a few days of camping, fishing, paddling and as a base for exploring in and around Dayton," shares one camper.
Biking on paved routes: Morgan's Canoe and Outdoor Adventure connects to local bike trails. A visitor notes, "Close to the Little Miami Bike Trail this was easy to walk on with my friend and her two little ones. The trail was paved which was a huge help for those of us who were extra short and didn't always attend to their surroundings when walking."
Canoeing and kayaking: Multiple waterways provide paddling opportunities. "Great KOA! had lots of activities, great pizza, really nice showers and it's beautiful. There's a large pool and a creek. Don't rent the bikes, they were terrible plus there's too many hills. Easy to dump black water," shares one visitor to Dayton KOA Holiday.
What campers like
Large, private sites: Buck Creek State Park Campground offers spacious camping areas. "Over a late-August weekend, we found the non-electric loop to be pretty quiet and uncrowded. The grounds are level and grassy, with trees that provide partial shade. Restrooms are clean enough, and there are showers with nice warm water," says one visitor.
Clean facilities: Stonelick State Park Campground maintains well-kept bathhouses. "The restrooms are a quick walk and very clean. The showers and park are a small walk but also super nice. There's a few trails at the entrance to the campground and a canoe/kayak launch a few minutes drive from the entrance," explains a recent guest.
Kid-friendly amenities: Lebanon-Cincinnati NE KOA focuses on family experiences. "This KOA sets the bar for the Ohio locations we have visited. The bathrooms are amazing and private. The tent site we had was huge and there were actually trees for our suspended tent and hammocks. The dog park wasn't huge, but larger than most," shares a camper.
Range of accommodation options: Cabin varieties include both basic and deluxe options. "It has a pool, laundry facilities on-site. The campground consists of 3 loops - A mostly full hookup, B loop Water and Electric and C loop is a mix. If you like wooded areas check out C loop," notes a visitor to Thousand Trails Wilmington.
What you should know
Seasonal availability: Most cabin locations have limited off-season availability. "State Park that offers a beach, canoes, fishing, and camping. Sites are drive-up with plenty of room for a tent or two and fire-rings. Some sites may have trees for hammocks. Can get loud with lots of RVs in spots nearby," explains a visitor to Stonelick State Park Campground.
Reservation requirements: Cowan Lake State Park Campground has specific booking rules. "There are a lot of shady campsites, sunny ones, electric, primitive, pet-friendly, handicapped, and pull-throughs. We love camping in the shady tree-lined areas where we have big sites for family gatherings," shares a long-time visitor.
Terrain differences: Campsites vary significantly in levelness and shade. "The lots are VERY close together, with most of the campground completely exposed with no shade. It was like trying to relax on a huge parking lot jammed with RVs and people," cautions one camper about Cowan Lake.
Accessibility considerations: Bathroom distance varies by site location. "The bathroom was perfectly adequate but a long walk from our site," notes a visitor to Buck Creek State Park Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Choose sites near recreational facilities. "We've been camping here for over 10 years and love it! There are organized activities on the lake and through the nature center. You can also do your own thing," shares a visitor to Cowan Lake State Park Campground.
Water safety: For cabins near water, take precautions. "We were a little nervous as the cabin is so close the river. This is part of the charm but when you have a 3 year old in your group then it is smart to keep an extra sharp eye on the kiddo as the river is a huge draw," warns a visitor to Morgan's Canoe and Outdoor Adventure.
Entertainment options: Olive Branch Campground provides diverse activities. "Very well kept campground with a lot of shade trees. Good separation of seasonal and overnight campers. Pull through and back ins available with full hookups. Friendly and helpful staff. Playground for the kids and a fishing pond," mentions a visitor.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: Check site reviews for levelness information. "Our space was nice and level. Nice hiking trails in the area. Showers were very nice and clean. Several water spickets throughout the park if you needed to access them. It was a bit of a drive back into the campground, probably 3 1/2 miles," shares a Buck Creek State Park Campground visitor.
Internet connectivity: For those working remotely, check signal strength. "Internet here on t-moble 5G home is 90Mbps down and 6 to 20Mbps up. Verizon on cellphone, only 10Mbs down, 1-3Mbps up. ATT cellphones are similar to Verizon. Great enough for work or play," notes a Cowan Lake State Park visitor.
Road conditions: Some access roads require caution. "The entry road is one lane. If you meet another vehicle someone has to back up. That's just poor design. The roads in the campground need grading. Lots of holes and ruts," warns a visitor to Lebanon-Cincinnati NE KOA.
