Best RV Parks & Resorts near Gerton, NC

RV parks near Gerton provide accommodations across different price points and settings. Red Gates RV Park operates from April through November with electric hookups, water, and sewer connections for motorhomes. Rutledge Lake RV Resort in Fletcher features full hookup sites that accommodate large rigs, with both 50-amp service and water available for extended stays. At Wilson's Riverfront RV Park in Asheville, travelers find riverfront sites with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer, though spaces are positioned close together. Wilderness Cove Campground offers 26 sites with electric and water hookups, operating year-round for visitors exploring the Blue Ridge mountains. "The riverfront sites are pretty close together and offer almost no privacy, but the concrete pads are brand new and level on the river side, so setup is a breeze."

Several mountain RV parks present navigation challenges that require careful planning. Roads into some campgrounds involve narrow, winding routes with elevation changes that may challenge longer rigs. Mama Gertie's Hideaway requires navigating uphill on narrow roads that demand slow, careful driving, particularly for vehicles over 40 feet. Cell service varies significantly throughout the region—Verizon coverage ranges from excellent at some parks to minimal at others, with AT&T typically showing 1-2 bars in mountain locations. Most parks provide dump stations, though locations like Wilson's Riverfront have them positioned where maneuvering larger rigs becomes difficult. Pet policies generally permit dogs on leashes with designated exercise areas at several parks. Fall and summer months see significantly higher occupancy rates, making advance reservations essential, especially for weekend stays.

    Spacious Skies Peach Haven

    Nice campground, lots of amenities.

Overall, this is a very nice, clean park conveniently located to the interstate I-85) and attractions in the area. It has all the amenities you would expect to find at a KOA such as a swimming pool, playground, dog park, miniature golf, store, clubhouse, and more (including goats). It is by far the nicest private campground in the area that we have stayed at.

This KOA has 127 sites offering varying degrees of services to accommodate RV's, tents, and those wanting to rent cabins. We chose a 50-amp full hook-up back-in site but were upgraded to a pull-thru so we could be in a sunny location to mitigate the chilly air. How nice of them! Our site (#79) was perfectly level as were most others (but not all). Water, electric, and cable hook-ups were well placed at the site and worked fine. We paid $37/night(with the KOA member discount). Nice, large grassy area for dogs to walk and sniff and there is a decent size dog park.  Roads and pads are hard packed gravel with grass in between sites. Some sites are set in a wooded area while some are out in the open with plenty of sun and satellite coverage. The park is big rig friendly and the roads are easily navigable. All sites have a picnic table and some had fire pits but ours did not. Cable is included and offered over 50 channels. Wifi worked well at our site.  The laundry was small with three washers and three dryers but very clean and had a decent book exchange. The bathroom and showers were super clean and looked like they were updated recently.

The campground is extremely clean and the owners/employees are super friendly. There is a short hiking trail (less than a mile) through the woods and plenty of green space in front of some of the pull-thrus. playground large swimming pool with large deck putt putt with lots of goat humor.

The only downside would be the closeness of sites but that is pretty much what you expect from private RV parks. Fortunately, we did not have neighbors right next to us which gave us more space. I'm usually not a KOA fan but have to say this one was great for our overnight stay and we would recommend it.

    LOCATION

The location is incredible! We enjoyed the accessibility of hiking, biking and fishing right from the campground. ART LOEB trailhead is right outside the campground entrance and is excellent for hiking and mountain biking. Several loops and even sites provide access to the river for fishing. Just outside the campground are endless trails and several beautiful waterfalls that can be accessed within a 5-15 min car ride. Convenient to a few restaurants, grocery stores and even a Walmart (which is slightly dodgy so be warned).

    SITE

014 WOAK site is an RV site. It’s spacious and very private. We loved how much room we had to spread out and entertain as we were traveling with several other camping families. Our site was the go to spot! Backing in wasn’t difficult. It was convenient that the pull through site across from us was vacant, this made backing in super easy. There are no hookups on this site. So be sure you have a generator! One bonus on the location of this site is the water access just feet away. We needed to fill up and had forgot to do so when we pulled in to the campground. What a relief to see a water access just steps from the campsite! The only downside was that generator hours are very limited. If you are traveling during warmer months or must have AC, this is not the site for you. We felt that the tree coverage really provided us protection from the heat and did very well without AC in early August.

    ACTIVITIES

    • Slide Rock is a natural water slide that is fun for the whole family. Yes… it’s COLD and honestly worth every moment of chilly suffering.

    • Hiking is abundant and all levels are accessible within minutes to a few miles of the campsite. Our favorites are: Looking Glass Falls (steps going down make this a breeze), Moore Cove Falls is a MUST and an easy trail that leads to the perfect waterfall for a good photo, Looking Glass Rock is a moderate to difficult hike and worth it. Looking Glass Rock is a long hike so be prepared to go early and bring a rain jacket.

    • Fishing right within the campground makes it perfect for an early morning or late afternoon activity. The hatchery is nearby and offers some wonderful opportunities to catch and release. Be sure to look in to a guided tour for a hands on experience filled with lots of educational info on local fish.

    • Biking is a top activity for lots of overnight and day campers. The Art Loeb Trail provides endless miles that proves fun for the whole family.

    • Ice Cream at Dolly’s should make your list if you love a refreshing treat. This iconic little stop if right by the entrance to the Pisgah Forest and just around the corner from the campground. Also a great spot for a cell signal!

    • Breweries aren’t hard to find nearby. Small microbreweries are within a few minutes and Sierra Nevada Brewery is 25 minutes away.

    DON’T FORGET

    • Generator (in case your site doesn’t offer electric)
    • Headlamps and Flashlights (tree coverage is heavy so it gets darker faster)
    • Fishing Poles
    • Rain Jackets (it rained almost daily in the afternoon)
    • Cordless Leaf Blower (for removing leaves from slide outs)

    Keowee-Toxaway State Park

Small / Quiet / Good Location

Stayed here for more than a week in early January and enjoyed it.  There's a bunch of nice state parks in upstate SC - this one is about 10 minutes from both Table Rock and Devil's Fork.  Nearest town with major stores is Pickens, SC.  Greenville is about 45 minutes.

    *Navigation*
The state park website mentions that rigs over 40ft will have trouble.  I think 40ft is conservative, but 50ft+ could definitely be problematic.  My truck plus trailer is 43ft and it was tight but manageable.  The problem area for larger rigs will likely be the curves before and after the dump station/restrooms (sharp turns plus elevation drop).  It will be difficult to fit in dump station area with a larger rig as well.

    *Internet*

Verizon 5G was blazing fast here on my Pepwave - literally over 100mbps download. Starlink was able to connect, but obviously wasn't very useable due to trees.

    *Site*

I stayed in #3 which was definitely one of the better sites there.  Easy back in with very private views looking out towards Lake Keowee & Jocassee.  In summertime you probably won't be able to see much with the foliage.  Used levelling blocks, but it wasn't bad.

    *Facilities*
Restrooms were older but clean.  Showers had hot water.  As mentioned, dump station is right in front of bathrooms.  No laundry.

    Mountain River Family Campground

    Home away from Home

We have been staying at Mtn River for about 3 years now and it’s become ‘home away from home’. You have your choice of river or mountainside sites. We prefer the river sites personally for the views & fishing.

The campground owners are fantastic people who’ve become friends. They live on site and take great pride in the property. The property is always impeccable. They are always working. Such a gorgeous place!! The pond is in the center of the property- yes you can fish(catch& release).

Areas setup with hammocks, corn hole, seating, etc. The new playground has been a big hit! Oh, and there’s also a dog park area.

The bathhouses are super clean and have air conditioning. The laundry room is brand new with great units and also A/C.

They incorporated additional activities this year over at the pavilion which our family has loved! Bingo, tie-dye t-shirts, food trucks, live music, and more! Our grandson loves to join us. Lots of kids and a great area for them to all play.

Tubing the river is always a fun treat! You can bring your own tubes or rent from the campground.

The camp store has expanded and features a mix of items- t-shirts, hats, hoodies, koozies, and more. As well as local jams, rubs, and other treats. They’re in the process of building a new office/camp store so we’re excited to see this complete.

We have a 40’ fifth wheel. No problems every getting in. They accommodate all size rigs. All sites have a concrete pad, fire pit and very nice large picnic table. Sites are spacious and do not feel cramped like we've experienced at other campgrounds.

Wi-Fi is generally pretty good. We’ve been able to work remote on some of our trips. We even had phone service our last trip(AT&T)!

Lots to do in the area! Hiking, Linville Winery(yum!), Linville Caverns, Grandfather Mtn and so many other great places. The office staff can certainly provide plenty of recommendations, too.

There are 2 grocery stores in town about 15min away. There’s also a local dollar store about 5min away.

We cannot say enough good things about MRFC. We’ve met some great campers there who we now call friends. We truly love this place and already have bookings for next year!

Guide to Gerton

RV camping near Gerton, North Carolina offers access to the rugged Blue Ridge Mountains with elevations ranging from 1,200-4,000 feet. The area experiences all four seasons with fall colors peaking mid-October and summer daytime temperatures typically in the 70s-80s. Campgrounds feature varying terrain from riverfront locations to hilltop settings with mountain views.

What to do

Outdoor recreation areas: Visitors to Wilderness Cove Campground can explore nearby Green River. "Space is limited," notes one camper, but it provides excellent access to water activities. "The tent camping is not quite 'roughing it': there's pretty reliable WiFi and the bath house is air conditioned and kept very clean."

Hiking opportunities: Multiple hiking trails within 30-minute drive of Gerton campgrounds provide varying difficulty levels. Near Mountain Stream RV Park, "We hiked mount Mitchell- cooked on our fire pit and relaxed with the fresh mountain air and starry nights - slept peacefully with the sounds of the running stream."

Fishing access: Most campgrounds near Gerton provide stream or pond fishing access. "Brody caught his first trout, it is a catch and release creek," mentions one Mountain Stream visitor, while another notes, "I sat in the creek in my camp chair and was more relaxed then I have been in a very long time."

What campers like

Level sites with privacy: Depending on the campground, sites vary from exposed to secluded. At Red Gates RV Park, reviewers appreciate the "level sites" and note "plenty of space and areas to walk our dog. They even have an off lead dog area with water available and poop bags."

Water features: Many campers specifically choose sites near water. One Hitching Post Campground visitor mentioned, "My son and I stayed here for the weekend. He wanted to tent camp. It was late fall and it was pretty chilly. We fished, cooked over the fire, just hung out, and enjoyed each others time together. Very peaceful and guiet."

Bathroom facilities: Quality and cleanliness of bathhouses vary significantly. Red Gates RV Park receives praise for its "Pristine bath house! Pristine campground!" While basic, many campgrounds maintain clean facilities. One reviewer noted, "The bathhouse was clean and adequate, but nothing fancy."

What you should know

Site spacing considerations: Site proximity varies widely between campgrounds. At Asheville's Bear Creek RV Park & Campground, "The sites were a little close together, but that didn't bother us. We had great cell and wifi service and the laundry/bath house was nice."

Reservation timing: Seasonal demand affects availability. "We weren't sure what exactly to expect as it had no reviews. BUT we loved it," noted one Red Gates visitor. Many parks have limited spaces available, particularly for weekend stays.

Road conditions: Mountain roads present unique challenges. For Hitching Post Campground, "We were in site A, its definetely big rig friendly. We travel in 30 TT and we had tons of room."

Amenities vary: Campground amenities range from basic to comprehensive. "They have a playground for kids. No wifi," reported one Hitching Post visitor. At Mountain Stream RV Park, "There's a playground for the kids and a little fenced in dog park, too (it even has a nice dog wash station!)."

Tips for camping with families

Entertainment options: Look for campgrounds with designated play areas. "Well maintained and super nice. Nice children and adult play area, cornhole, horseshoes, swing set, and fire pits," notes a visitor to Maple Ridge RV Park.

Space considerations: Some parks offer more room for children to explore. At Bear Creek RV Park, "You can hear noise from the interstate, but after a while, you get used to it. Be sure to specify your rig size upon making a reservation as all sites vary in length."

Bathroom accessibility: Families should consider bathroom proximity. "The bathhouse is clean and adequate, but nothing fancy; we're hoping that this will be next on their list of improvements during the off-season," notes one Mountain Stream visitor.

Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Mountain terrain often means uneven sites. At Rutledge Lake RV Resort, "Nice gravel level sites. Greg was very helpful at leading us back and gave us great information about the area."

Site selection strategies: Choose sites based on your priorities. "Waterfront site was fairly level and loved being able to walk down stairs to lake area," mentions one Rutledge Lake visitor.

Hookup availability: Hookup options vary by site and campground. "Laundry room was nice and large - easy and quick to get 3 loads done," notes another Rutledge Lake camper. At Mountain Stream, sites feature "a full hook up, electric and water (even with temps in the low 20's at night)."
