Best Cabin Camping near Truxton, NY

State parks near Truxton offer rustic cabins with varying levels of amenities and comfort. Green Lakes State Park Campground features a designated Cabin Colony with basic furnishings, electricity, and refrigerators. At Bowman Lake State Park, cabins are nestled in wooded areas providing natural shade and privacy from neighboring sites. Most cabins include beds, tables, and electricity, though amenities vary by location. Fillmore Glen and Chenango Valley state parks also offer cabin accommodations with picnic tables and fire rings. "Spacious cabin was clean and comfortable. Two bedrooms, one with bunk beds and another with a full. There were dressers in each room. Also in the main room with a fireplace, futon, and table with benches. Screened-in porch that had a toilet area. Full kitchen with fridge, oven and sink."

Cabin styles range from basic single-room structures to multi-room layouts with separate sleeping areas. Most cabins sleep 4-6 people with combinations of twin beds, bunk beds, and full-sized mattresses. Pets are allowed in designated cabins at several locations including Green Lakes, Robert H. Treman, and Chenango Valley state parks. Reservations are essential during peak season (May through October), with many parks requiring bookings up to nine months in advance. A recent review noted: "We stayed at site 35 which is a wooded site located at the end of a loop. It was one of the larger, more private sites; reserve it if it is available."

Most cabins require visitors to bring their own bedding, pillows, towels, and cooking supplies. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between locations - some cabins feature full kitchens with refrigerators, stoves and sinks, while others offer only basic counters or outdoor cooking areas. Portable water containers are useful as water spigots are typically shared between multiple sites. Firewood can be purchased at ranger stations or camp stores, though availability may be limited. According to one visitor: "Outside was a fire ring. An easy hike to a nearby lake was very pretty. Lots of wildlife, coyotes howling in the distance at night and plenty of deer. Perfect time of year to go, barely any mosquitoes."

    Gilbert Lake State Park Campground

    Fantastic Cabin Getaway

Spacious cabin was clean and comfortable. Two bedrooms, one with bunk beds and another with a full. There were dressers in each room. Also in the main room with a fireplace, futon, and table with benches. Screened-in porch that had a toilet area. Full kitchen with fridge, oven and sink.

Two entrances, one to the kitchen and the other to the porch. Outside was a fire ring.

An easy hike to a nearby lake was very pretty. Lots of wildlife, coyotes howling in the distance at night and plenty of deer. Perfect time of year to go, barely any mosquitoes and it was warm during the day but cool at night to enjoy a roaring fire inside.

Large park with nice playground and picnic area for day use.

We had better than average cell phone service near/in the cabin with AT&T.

    Watkins Glen State Park Campground

Watkins Glen State Park, New York

Campers arriving at Watkins Glen State Park are immediately captivated by its dramatic gorge scenery, where 19 waterfalls cascade through narrow stone walls. Their campsites are nestled among hardwood forests, offering a perfect balance of sunlit clearings and shady retreats. Each site comes equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, making it easy to prepare meals after a day spent exploring the park’s famous Gorge Trail. The park’s facilities blend rustic charm with modern comforts: clean flush toilets, hot-water showers, and convenient potable water stations. Hiking enthusiasts appreciate the interconnected trail system, which includes the popular Rim Trail for elevated views of the gorge, as well as more secluded footpaths through hemlock groves. Families particularly enjoy the nearby swimming pool and easy-access picnic areas overlooking Seneca Lake. To simplify travel logistics for out-of-state visitors, many campers opt to pre-book an airport transfer so they can arrive at Ithaca or Elmira–Corning Regional Airport and head straight to the park without the hassle of car rentals. Those planning to explore multiple stops along the Finger Lakes often choose the provider’s reliable city-to-city rides for comfortable, door-to-door transportation between destinations. All in all, Watkins Glen State Park delivers an unforgettable combination of awe-inspiring gorge hikes, well-appointed campsites, and family-friendly amenities. Campers seeking both adventure and relaxation will find this New York treasure hard to surpass.

    Chenango Valley State Park Campground

    Family Oriented

Campsites are in the woods with picnic tables and fire ring, plenty of shade and a good amount of space between camps. They have so many birds, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits and insects that it was a veritable wonderland Playground and shallow swimming area for children with life guards and a sandy beach and new bath house. They have fishing and boat rentals, however the lake is pretty small and a lot of trees still in the water since a flood. There are nice trails for hiking that go all the way around the lake. I had my 5 year old grandson with me and he loved it but I did have to cut it short when we got rained out.

Shady Pines Camp at CBG Farm - CLOSED

    Rustic and beautiful

After meeting up with the owner we went down to the parking area. A dirt trail and park on the side in the grass. You have to walk in about 2 minutes on a trail. The owner has a golf cart with a small wagon and transported our stuff to the campsite and back when we left…he was really nice and very helpful.the trail opened to open grassy areas with surrounding trees where we pitched our tent…a small table and fire ring w grate provided. Also firewood.you get water back up at the barn but the owner was nice and brought us a 5 gal. Jug. Pond stocked with fish…catch and release. We caught some nice bass and bullhead…kids had a blast. Past the pond is the cabin with sitting spots and an open cement fire stove and oven also a fire pit. Theres an outhouse behind the cabin w a seat over a bucket w chemicals…papertowels tp hand sanitizer and disenfectant wipes nicely provided. We did have cellphone signals. Overall a really nice spot to relax and commune w nature.

    Pinecreek Campground

Beautiful Park, beautiful area could be so much more with a little effort!

Pinecreek is a beautiful park in a great area 10 minutes from downtown Ithica New York and Lake Cayuga. The area has everything you could possibly want or need. Fabulous State Parks with spectacular waterfalls, a farmers market right on the lake front, Cornell University and so much more. That being said it may be the reason the campground doesn't offer any planned activities. They do have a swimming pool and what appears to be a large clubhouse/meeting area that is not or was not used while we were there, nor were any activities publicized. They do have a small arcade but it did not stay open past 8 pm and did not appear to be air-conditioned.

Our campsite was a full hookup with a large grassy area for setting up our outside chairs and picnic table. Although we enjoyed our stay we felt it was a bit overpriced for not having much to offer. They also have a very long list of rules & while they do allow pets there is a list of breed restrictions you need to be aware of before booking a reservation. They also charge for electricity on any stays one week or longer which we had not encountered previously at campgrounds where we have stayed.

Overall we enjoyed our stay but not sure we would stay again.

Robert H. Treman State Park Campground

Campground with easy access to swimming, hiking, and waterfalls!

We spent two nights camping at Robert H. Treman State Park. The campground has an area with wooded sites, an area with sites in a large field (with hookups for RVs), and an area for the cabins (which looked very cool). All sites have fire rings and a picnic table. There are also flush toilets and free showers; these facilities were well-maintained and clean. We stayed in site 35 which is a wooded site located at the end of a loop. It was one of the larger, more private sites; reserve it if it is available.

The park contains nine miles of hiking trails. We hiked the Gorge Trail (2.12 miles) with a return on the Rim Trail (2.09 miles) to create a loop from the campground. The hike took us alongside the gorge of Enfield Glen and past twelve waterfalls. The route was a lot of up and down with terrain through wooded areas as well as on rocks next to the water. However, the stunning views and its variety did not disappoint. Unfortunately the swimming area was closed due to flooding but it would be a perfect ending to this hike on a warm summer day.

Overall, this park was great. The size was just right with on-site access to hiking and swimming. The nearby amenities of downtown Ithaca was a bonus!

What to do

Swim at natural waterfall pools: Green Lakes State Park features a swimming area at the beach with rentals available. "You can rent a kayak and enjoy the beautiful lake. There are miles of trails to explore. There is a camp store, laundry room, recreation room, playgrounds and much more," notes Cindy H.

Hike gorge and waterfall trails: Robert H. Treman State Park offers multiple hiking options suitable for various skill levels. According to Emma N., "The bathrooms were clean, with multiple free, hot showers. I believe there were separate dishwashing sinks inside the restrooms." The park provides access to impressive waterfall views and natural swimming areas.

Kayak at quiet lakes: Bowman Lake State Park offers boat rentals and calm waters ideal for beginners. Michael O. at Lebanon Reservoir Campground describes the experience: "The staff is great, they have a nice little store for the basic supplies and treats, as well as fire wood and boat rentals."

Explore wine trails: Located near several Finger Lakes wine regions, cabin accommodations serve as convenient base camps. "The Finger lakes region is so beautiful. Be sure to time your visit with the fall foliage change, or grab your snow shoes for a winter adventure," recommends Kent B. at Buttermilk Falls.

What campers like

Private wooded sites: Fillmore Glen State Park offers secluded camping spots. "Awesome little park in the Finger Lakes region with nature on site and lots more to do and explore nearby (wine trails!). Swimming is only allowed in certain parts and there are some pretty steep drop offs so watch the kids close," advises Kim B.

Off-season quiet: Several parks offer extended seasons into fall. Paully B. writes about Fillmore Glen: "Beautiful little park. Wonderful trails, swimming pool, and activities for kids. Camp sites are a little close."

Free hot showers: Taughannock Falls State Park maintains clean facilities for overnight guests. A camper mentions, "Nice camp ground with well-kept bathrooms. Close to hiking trails along the gorge and Cayuga Lake access for swimming and boating. Close to Ithaca and other state parks."

Wildlife viewing: Several cabin locations offer opportunities to spot local fauna. Jeff A. notes about Fillmore Glen: "Nice Campground very quiet due to lots of rain this year. I can see where it might get crowded in the fields but there are a couple nice loops, clean bathrooms, great free showers, and an incredible waterfall and some nice hiking trails."

What you should know

Reservation timing: Most cabins at state parks near Truxton require advance booking, with prime summer weekends filling 6-9 months ahead. Weekdays typically offer greater availability and reduced rates at many parks.

Cabin facilities vary significantly: Chenango Valley State Park offers cabins with different amenity levels. Mary S. explains: "We were just passing through on a rainy night, but this park would be a good choice for a multi-night stay. The park brochure warns of the occasional bear but that's true even in towns all over NY."

Weather preparedness: Spring and fall cabin stays require extra layers. "Went in the fall, very quiet and peaceful. Woke to snow on the tent. Had a great time listening to the birds and enjoying the trails," shares Scott M. about Robert H. Treman State Park.

Site selection matters: Choose cabin locations carefully based on needs. Fred C. advises about Chenango Valley: "The beach area is well staffed and clean. Changing areas are available as well as a splash pad for the little kids. There are miles of trails to hike and roads to bike."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Watkins Glen State Park offers recreational facilities for children. Jennifer W. shares, "Watkins Glen is beautiful and scenic. Our favorite was Eagles Cliffs Falls. I have a 7 year old son and he enjoyed every second of this, there is a lot to see and a lot of water to play in!"

Beach swimming areas: Several parks feature dedicated swimming areas with lifeguards during summer months. "The sites are good, level, and the campsite is pretty. The trails around the lake are great! Beautiful water and various difficulties on the trails make it pretty fun to explore," notes Chelsea B. about Green Lakes State Park.

Bike-friendly locations: Many cabin areas connect to safe biking paths. Courtney Z. recommends Chenango Valley: "Bring your bikes, the swimming is great and the entire swimming/boating area just underwent a major renovation. You can rent kayaks and paddle boards and the park is well maintained and monitored by park police, very safe!"

Kid-friendly trails: Look for shorter loop trails appropriate for younger hikers. "This state park campground is one of the few that offer full hook ups. The hiking includes an easy 3.1 mile loop with much shade around two glacier formed turquoise lakes," says Sheri S. about Green Lakes State Park.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Many cabin areas also accommodate RVs but require preparation. "Electric sites are not the best though. Rocky and unlevel. Not made for large campers," notes Victoria about Robert H. Treman State Park.

Seasonal accessibility: Road conditions to cabin areas vary by season. "Camping facilities were clean and well maintained. However, we were the only tent campers around and the RV groups were loud late and early," reports Kayleigh K. about Fillmore Glen State Park.

Water and electric connections: Taughannock Falls State Park offers various hookup options. "Check out which side the hookups are on. Some not situated on the right side so you'll need extra long cords," advises Beth, who also notes the "beautiful area" with hiking options at nearby Watkins Glen.

Loop selection matters: Different camping sections offer varying experiences. Oleńka S. from Bowman Lake explains: "We had a back in site with a fire pit, picnic table, and no hook ups. It was gravel and not super level, but we made it work. There was a potable water spigot a few sites over and a bathroom with showers a short walk away."
