Best Tent Camping near Portland, NY

The forests surrounding Portland, New York offer several tent camping options within the Chautauqua County region. Primitive tent sites can be found at Warner Road Dispersed Camping in North Harmony State Forest, though reviews indicate varying conditions at this location. Compass Campgrounds provides more established tent camping with trail access, while Big Oak Hill offers a hilltop camping experience on a working hay farm with drive-in access.

Most primitive tent sites in the area feature basic amenities with limited services. Warner Road campsites include fire pits but no drinking water, requiring campers to pack in their own supplies. Sites generally consist of natural forest floor surfaces with minimal improvements. Several locations permit fires where designated rings exist, though campers should verify current fire regulations before their trip. At Big Oak Hill, tent campers may need four-wheel drive vehicles after rain as the access road becomes difficult to navigate. Trash management varies between sites, with some requiring pack-out of all waste.

The North Harmony State Forest area provides secluded tent camping experiences but requires proper preparation. Many sites feature natural surroundings with opportunities to observe local wildlife along nearby trails. Tent campers should be prepared for variable conditions, especially regarding site cleanliness. A recent review noted, "The site was fine, fire pit, primitive spot so no services. Kind of a gross site, the previous people who stayed at our site were messy and left litter, but it served its purpose as a free place to sleep along a longer trip." Another camper wrote that some locations have "posted signs that say Day Use Only," indicating potential restrictions on overnight tent camping, despite evidence of regular use.

    Hearts Content Recreation Area

    Great quiet little campground

Very nice quiet small wooded campground. No hookups, about 3-4 fresh water spigots, 1 dump station and dumpster. Water pressure was very low and took a while to fill tank. 26 various sized sites, some large with plenty of space for our 22 foot tow behind and truck + some for extra vehicles. Other smaller sites for tents or vans. Self serve ice $2 wood $10. Vault toilets. Fire rings and picnic table at each site. AT&T spotty 0-1 bars. Host camper. Quiet time 10pm-6am. 1 Xlarge site for groups.

    Hearts Content Recreation Area

    Simple and serene

Hearts Content is best described as a way station. The sites are nestled within a grove of immense pines. Some are large enough for large RV’s . There are no showers. Bathrooms are vault toilets. Two of the sites include Adirondack type shelters. A picnic table and fire ring are within each site. I used this site as a staging area to explore Allegheny National Forest for a week. Used a camp shower. The closest town is Warren, PA. Firewood is available at the camp host site. Across the road is an hiking area with picnic tables and the like.

    Willow Bay Recreation Area

    Quiet nights, Easy days

Willow bay campground is run by the National Forest Service. The reservable lots are wide and numerous for a out of the way sight. The campground services tent sites, RV sites as well as small cabins with electricity. There is a central bathhouse near the oak loop. Closer to the boat ramp sites- most of which are tent ready, there are vault toilets. These sites are less than a mile from the North Country Trail. Other, smaller trails are here as well. The New York State lone is less than five miles away- providing access to Allegheny State Park. The closest town of note is Bradford, which is about 18 miles away. It has all you need to get your necessities. The cabins were small- one twin bed and a set of single bunks. You need to bring your own sheets. There is a small heater imbedded in the wall. It keeps things from getting too cold, as it was when I was there. Fire ring and picnic table provided. Charcoal grill as well. The only problem I had was with the wildlife. A mouse or something kep crawling in the space between the roof and ceiling. There is no cel service here, and you shouldn’t need it either. Places to visit are too numerous to mention, but I will give a shout out to the zippo case museum, absolutely a must.

Quaker Area — Allegany State Park State Park

This is a great vacation area.....spend a week!

Did you know this is NY's largest state campground? We stopped here on a rainy night, but what we saw convinced me we need to return. I know this campground is a vacation destination for families in western NY.

Cain Hollow is in the Quaker Run area which includes Quaker Lake. There is another campground in the Red House Area, and there are also lots of cabins. This is definitely a 4 seasons park - hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing....

I was able to take photos of a few sites the next morning. You can see that sites are private and you're definitely in the woods. There are food storage boxes at all campsites because you're in bear country.

    Hearts Content Recreation Area

    Minimal offering for maximum relaxing

This campground is within Allegheny National Forest near the town of Warren and Tidouette. The sites are few but spacious. Good for car camping, though I’m sure a smaller RVcould get by. Each site has a fire ring. Two sites have Adirondack type shelters. The night sky is promising but light pollution from Warren inhibits a truly awesome night sky. There is a vault toilet. No showers. No water either. Bring what you need! The closest town is about 30 minutes away. Lots of critter life. My dogs loved it here. We spent all days exploring the nearby trails and creeks. Price was cheap. No frills but a quiet respite for sure.

    Dewdrop

    Spacious

Campsite layouts are non traditional with large driveways and often times the tables and fire rings are below the driveway.  With this layout you get more privacy with very few sites having and overlapping with other sites. Pitching a tent was easy on the driveway and fairly level. Some sites had large high sided fire rings which take away from the fireside relaxation of a shorter camp chair.

Bathrooms and shower house was below the standards of many of PA State Parks which we regard as the benchmark for campgrounds at reasonable prices.

Boating and biking all accessible from the grounds. No need to drive to the trails at Jakes Rocks.

    Evangola State Park Campground

    Great campground

We stayed here three nights to ride out a heat wave and really liked it. Sites are electric only, with a dump station available at the entrance and one in the campground loop. There are potable water spigots throughout the campground, where you awkwardly pull over to the side of the road and fill your tank. Sites are pretty much wide open, with zero separation between you and your neighbor. Most are out in direct sun but the ones along the edge have some tree cover and shade.

There are yurts here as well, and a playground, and a huge disc golf course. You can walk to the beach from the campground (dogs aren’t allowed on the beach). The nature center is right in the campground, by the basketball and tennis courts.

Showers were dirty and buggy, but they’re free and you can actually choose your own water temperature. NY State campgrounds require proof of rabies vaccinations for your dogs.

Good cell reception for Verizon, ATT wasn’t great but the cell booster helped. Trash bins, but no recycling. Beautiful sunset on the lake.

    Morrison Campground

Good hike for my young sons

Been here a few times. Took my oldest so, 7 years old, on his first backpacking trip. It was hard for him but persevered. Camp grounds are well dispersed for privacy. Each with a fire ring and table. Even a vaulted toilet which we discovered on our last trip. It’s kinda hidden, you may have to search for it.

Guide to Portland

Tent campsites near Portland, New York span several counties in western New York's forested terrain. The area features elevations between 1,300-1,800 feet with seasonal temperature variations ranging from below freezing in winter to 80°F in summer. Most camping options provide access to the nearby Chautauqua Lake region, with campgrounds situated on ridgelines or near creek systems requiring proper weather preparation.

What to do

Hiking trails exploration: Allegany State Park provides extensive hiking opportunities with varying difficulty levels. "The thunder rocks are really, really enjoyable," notes one camper about this nearby attraction. Trail conditions can vary seasonally, with some requiring navigation around obstacles.

Fishing access: French Creek Flood Plain Overlook offers prime fishing spots with creek access. The campsite provides a strategic location for anglers, with sites situated within walking distance to water. "Large sites well shaded" makes this location comfortable for longer fishing excursions.

Winter recreation: Allegany State Park remains open year-round with cabins suitable for cold-weather camping. As one visitor noted, "Cabins feel rustic but are new and modern. Had everything we needed for a weekend with extended family, almost like a hotel in what they supply. Open all year. Allegany State Park is nearby for hiking, snowshoeing, XC skiing, leaf peeping, etc."

What campers like

Established facilities: Compass Campgrounds receives positive feedback for its combination of amenities and natural features. "Compass Campgrounds is more than a place to stay, they also have tons of trails so you can explore the area and search for local wildlife," states one reviewer who appreciated the balance between comfort and wilderness.

Working farm setting: Big Oak Hill offers a unique agricultural camping environment. "It is a newly created campsite that is located on top of a hill with a big oak tree," writes one camper. The working hay farm provides an interesting backdrop with scenic landscapes that campers frequently highlight.

Waterfront options: Streamside Eriegrove provides water access that appeals to tent campers seeking natural water features. A recent visitor simply stated, "Will become your go to campsite!" The location allows for direct stream access from most tent sites, making it convenient for water collection and recreation.

What you should know

Variable site conditions: Tent camping conditions near Portland can be inconsistent between locations and seasons. Weather impacts accessibility, particularly at elevated sites like Big Oak Hill where "you may need a 4-wheel drive vehicle if there has been rain."

Mixed amenities: Hidden Valley Camping Area offers electric hookups and water access but limited facilities in other areas. A visitor noted, "It's new they have a little bit to go to be a Jellystone campground," indicating ongoing development of amenities.

Wildlife awareness: Bears are active in parts of the region, requiring proper food storage. As one camper at Allegany State Park warns, "Do not leave food out. The bears are very ambitious." Bear-resistant containers are recommended when camping in forested areas around Portland.

Tips for camping with families

Cabin options: Bova Cottages at Allegany State Park accommodate larger family groups. "Our family of 6 fit comfortably in one cabin when we were all small. There's beaches, guided nature trails, biking, hiking. Basically, Allegany has it all," shares a family camper.

Water recreation: Several campgrounds feature swimming areas appropriate for children. "The water is easy to find, bathrooms are available with showers, and the options are tents, cabins, or RV camping," notes a visitor describing family-friendly facilities.

Trail difficulty: Family hiking requires advance planning as trail conditions vary significantly. One camper describes, "Hemlock Hollow and Conservation Trails were grueling hikes... with a downed tree or 3 every 20 yards or so." Check with rangers about current trail conditions before bringing children.

Tips from RVers

Access limitations: Many primitive tent sites around Portland have restricted RV access due to narrow roads and limited turning space. Sites at Big Oak Hill may require "4-wheel drive vehicle if there has been rain," making larger RVs impractical during wet periods.

Hookup availability: Bella Vista Campground provides electric, water and sewer hookups for RVers seeking full services. Tent campers can also access these amenities at designated sites, though they share space with RVs during peak season.

Seasonal considerations: Most RV-friendly campgrounds in the region operate from mid-April through mid-October. Hidden Valley Camping Area specifically notes a season from "April 15 to October 15," with limited off-season access for even small RVs due to road conditions.
