Warner Road Dispersed Camping in North Harmony State Forest sits at approximately 1,800 feet elevation in western New York's glacially formed landscape. Located roughly 30 miles from Portland, this primitive camping area experiences cold winters with significant snowfall and mild summers with average high temperatures around 80°F. Camping conditions are basic with no developed facilities and visitors need to pack in all supplies.
What to do
Hiking at Thunder Rocks: In Allegany State Park, massive boulder formations offer unique climbing experiences. "This park is a fun place to hike and explore. Check out Thunder rocks and climb boulders the size of a house," notes Jeremy H.
Cross-country skiing: At Hearts Content Recreation Area, winter trails become seasonal ski routes. "The Recreation Area is home to 3 nice hiking trails, including one all-season trail that converts to a cross-country skiing trail in the snowy months," explains Matthew.
Wildlife viewing: North Harmony State Forest offers opportunities to observe local fauna in their natural habitat. "During weekdays the area deer will often approach from the woods behind the campsites to feast on low hanging leaves. We've seen dozens of them who will get within 10-20 yards of you for a snack later into the night," reports Matthew from Hearts Content.
What campers like
Old-growth forest setting: The mature tree canopy at Hearts Content provides excellent shade coverage. "The sites are nestled within a grove of immense pines. Some are large enough for large RV's," explains Bill G. "The canopy is dense here."
Natural privacy: Many campsites feature natural screening between sites. "We could barely see our 'neighbors' through the trees. Well shaded spots," shares Heather M. about Hearts Content Recreation Area.
Family-friendly activities: Allegany State Park organizes regular educational programs. "They run daily activities you can go to and learn about different things in nature," says Kelly B. about the Red House Area at Allegany State Park.
What you should know
Pack-in water required: No potable water exists at Warner Road dispersed sites. "The site was fine, fire pit, primitive spot so no services," notes Rose S. about Warner Road Dispersed Camping.
Overnight restrictions confusion: Some signage conflicts with dispersed camping practices. "Like the other review, this site has a lot of litter. Clearly people are camping here at times but there are posted signs that say Day Use Only," reports Denise D.
Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly between campgrounds. "One bar of usable Verizon 4G LTE and T-Mobile 4G LTE suitable for slow web browsing and e-mail, but little else," explains a Hearts Content camper.
Tips for camping with families
Playground availability: West Haven RV Park offers child-friendly recreation options. "Fishing pond & pool are so nice too," mentions Tony L., making it suitable for families with children.
Try an Adirondack shelter: Hearts Content offers simple cabin-like structures at select sites. "I was lucky enough to get a site that provided an additional shelter that provided cover from the extensive rain we received one night," shares Bill G.
Secure reservations early: Confirmation issues can occur during peak seasons. "My wife called weeks in advance and reserved 2 tent spots for us and my parents... the lady somehow lost our paperwork and information. So our sites we had 'reserved' were taken," warns Fred J. about West Haven RV Park.
Tips from RVers
Water pressure considerations: Cherry Creek Campground offers full hookups but with some infrastructure limitations. "The campground is quiet and spacious. The facilities are in need of updates but are definitely in working order," reports Bret J.
Tank fill timing: Some parks have infrastructure constraints requiring patience. "Water pressure was very low and took a while to fill tank," notes Jennifer K. about Hearts Content Recreation Area.
Electric hookup options: Cherry Creek offers both 30 and 50-amp service for larger rigs. "The campground is quiet and spacious," shares Bret J., making it suitable for various RV sizes despite some facility limitations.
