Best Cabin Camping near Pompey, NY

Several cabin options are available in state parks near Pompey, offering varying levels of comfort and amenities. Green Lakes State Park features a Cabin Colony with basic accommodations including electricity and beds. Oneida Shores County Park and Fillmore Glen State Park provide simple cabin rentals with picnic tables and fire rings outside. "Most sites are pretty spacious with pets allowed in some loops," according to one camper reviewing their stay at a nearby park. Cabins at Taughannock Falls State Park are situated close to hiking trails and waterfall views, while Verona Beach State Park cabins offer lake access during the summer months.

Rustic cabins predominate in the Pompey region, typically furnished with beds and basic amenities while requiring guests to bring their own linens and cooking supplies. Many cabins are clustered in colonies, allowing for family or group gatherings with shared outdoor spaces. Reservations are essential, particularly for summer months when the May-to-October operating season sees highest demand. "Cabins looked very cool" noted one visitor to Robert H. Treman State Park, who added that the park contains "cabins, tents and RV sites, some of which are handicapped accessible." Most cabin locations in the area maintain pet-friendly policies with some breed restrictions.

Most cabins include beds and electricity but require visitors to bring bedding, pillows, towels, and cooking equipment. Kitchen facilities vary significantly—some cabins offer refrigerators while others provide only outdoor cooking options at fire rings with grates. Several campgrounds feature on-site stores selling firewood, ice, and limited groceries. The Lebanon Reservoir Campground and Whispering Woods Campground maintain camp stores with essential provisions. Nearby towns offer more extensive shopping options for food and supplies, making it practical to stock up before arrival at more remote cabin locations.

Marina convenience store with pontoon boat rentals

    Fishing

    Swimming

    Ice cream and concessions stand

    Arcade room

Electric service boxes are shared in-between sites. This could pose an issue if your power cord is not long enough.

There is only source for water fill up. This could end up being a very very long wait if you arrive at the same time as other campers.

    Only 2 dump stations

They don’t allow pull-in camping. Campers MUST be backed in

    Chenango Valley State Park Campground

    Family Oriented

Campsites are in the woods with picnic tables and fire ring, plenty of shade and a good amount of space between camps. They have so many birds, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits and insects that it was a veritable wonderland Playground and shallow swimming area for children with life guards and a sandy beach and new bath house. They have fishing and boat rentals, however the lake is pretty small and a lot of trees still in the water since a flood. There are nice trails for hiking that go all the way around the lake. I had my 5 year old grandson with me and he loved it but I did have to cut it short when we got rained out.

Shady Pines Camp at CBG Farm - CLOSED

    Rustic and beautiful

After meeting up with the owner we went down to the parking area. A dirt trail and park on the side in the grass. You have to walk in about 2 minutes on a trail. The owner has a golf cart with a small wagon and transported our stuff to the campsite and back when we left…he was really nice and very helpful.the trail opened to open grassy areas with surrounding trees where we pitched our tent…a small table and fire ring w grate provided. Also firewood.you get water back up at the barn but the owner was nice and brought us a 5 gal. Jug. Pond stocked with fish…catch and release. We caught some nice bass and bullhead…kids had a blast. Past the pond is the cabin with sitting spots and an open cement fire stove and oven also a fire pit. Theres an outhouse behind the cabin w a seat over a bucket w chemicals…papertowels tp hand sanitizer and disenfectant wipes nicely provided. We did have cellphone signals. Overall a really nice spot to relax and commune w nature.

    Pinecreek Campground

Beautiful Park, beautiful area could be so much more with a little effort!

Pinecreek is a beautiful park in a great area 10 minutes from downtown Ithica New York and Lake Cayuga. The area has everything you could possibly want or need. Fabulous State Parks with spectacular waterfalls, a farmers market right on the lake front, Cornell University and so much more. That being said it may be the reason the campground doesn't offer any planned activities. They do have a swimming pool and what appears to be a large clubhouse/meeting area that is not or was not used while we were there, nor were any activities publicized. They do have a small arcade but it did not stay open past 8 pm and did not appear to be air-conditioned.

Our campsite was a full hookup with a large grassy area for setting up our outside chairs and picnic table. Although we enjoyed our stay we felt it was a bit overpriced for not having much to offer. They also have a very long list of rules & while they do allow pets there is a list of breed restrictions you need to be aware of before booking a reservation. They also charge for electricity on any stays one week or longer which we had not encountered previously at campgrounds where we have stayed.

Overall we enjoyed our stay but not sure we would stay again.

Robert H. Treman State Park Campground

Campground with easy access to swimming, hiking, and waterfalls!

We spent two nights camping at Robert H. Treman State Park. The campground has an area with wooded sites, an area with sites in a large field (with hookups for RVs), and an area for the cabins (which looked very cool). All sites have fire rings and a picnic table. There are also flush toilets and free showers; these facilities were well-maintained and clean. We stayed in site 35 which is a wooded site located at the end of a loop. It was one of the larger, more private sites; reserve it if it is available.

The park contains nine miles of hiking trails. We hiked the Gorge Trail (2.12 miles) with a return on the Rim Trail (2.09 miles) to create a loop from the campground. The hike took us alongside the gorge of Enfield Glen and past twelve waterfalls. The route was a lot of up and down with terrain through wooded areas as well as on rocks next to the water. However, the stunning views and its variety did not disappoint. Unfortunately the swimming area was closed due to flooding but it would be a perfect ending to this hike on a warm summer day.

Overall, this park was great. The size was just right with on-site access to hiking and swimming. The nearby amenities of downtown Ithaca was a bonus!

Lakeview Camping Area — Fair Haven Beach State Park

    We decided to move on

We drove through here but didn’t stay. The non-electric sites were pretty much all on hilly areas, most would be impossible for an RV to get level, though there were a few that would have worked.

We drove through the “bluffs” loop (electric sites), thinking it would be beautiful and look out on the water, but it was a nightmare for us, with huge RVs jam packed side by side like a parking lot.

The lakeview loop was nicer, but still too many RVs all in a row. There are also cute cabins here for rent.

When we were there the city was under a water advisory- all water had to be boiled before any kind of use. There was a dump station, and trash bins but no recycling (I’m disappointed in the lack of recycling at NY State campgrounds!) So, we moved on to Selkirk SP and stayed there instead.

    Ta-Ga-Soke Campgrounds

    Overall good experience

The site was good size and included a picnic table and a fire ring. Site however was very close to other sites and not very private. had to pay with quarters to shower not a problem but inconvenient. Site was very close to water and boat launch and that was great.

What to do

Swimming at natural pools: Fillmore Glen State Park features a unique natural swimming pool with lifeguard supervision. "Swimming is only allowed in certain parts and there are some pretty steep drop offs so watch the kids close," notes one visitor to Fillmore Glen State Park.

Kayaking on glacial lakes: Green Lakes State Park offers boat rentals for exploring its distinctive green-blue waters. "You can rent a kayak and enjoy the beautiful lake. There are miles of trails to explore," explains a camper at Green Lakes State Park.

Hiking waterfall trails: Multiple state parks feature gorge and waterfall hikes within walking distance of cabin areas. "The fall itself is amazing and the location is unbeatable since you're camping in the State Park," writes a visitor about Taughannock Falls State Park.

Winter activities: Some cabin locations remain open for cold-weather recreation. "The winter the camp ground is open for hiking, x country skiing and smobiling," mentions a reviewer about seasonal options at Fillmore Glen State Park.

What campers like

Private wooded sites: Bowman Lake State Park offers secluded cabin sites. "It was very secluded and in the woods, right next to the lake as well. I enjoyed how spread out this campground is compared to most," explains a visitor to Bowman Lake State Park.

Lake access: Many cabin locations feature direct water access. "We stayed at site 11. As you can see sites are spacious and this one was right on the lake's edge," notes a camper at Verona Beach State Park.

Clean facilities: State park cabin areas maintain well-kept washrooms. "Bathrooms are very clean and close to all campsites. Kids loved the park and swimming in the waterfall beach," reports a visitor about Fillmore Glen State Park.

Proximity to towns: Several cabin locations provide convenient access to nearby communities. "I enjoy this park so much! Really love that it is a park in the middle of little towns. Close to grocery, great walks and fun lake to swim in," mentions a Green Lakes visitor.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Summer cabin bookings fill quickly, especially for July and August weekends. "Fills up during August when the State Fair is in Syracuse (same is true for every campsite in this area)," advises a camper at Green Lakes State Park.

Electric hookups: Most cabin areas provide electrical service, though water connections vary. "There are many sites with electric available at every site. There are some sites with full hook-up available," explains a visitor to Green Lakes State Park.

Weather considerations: Spring conditions can impact cabin camping experiences. "Due to lots of rain this year I can see where it might get crowded in the fields but there are a couple nice loops," notes a visitor to Fillmore Glen State Park.

Noise factors: Some cabin areas experience higher noise levels from nearby activities. "We camped at Oneida Shores Park in a Tent. Great Views from Tent Sites... It's a loud and busy place certain times of the year due to a raceway located nearby and fishing events as well," reports a visitor to Oneida Shores.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several parks offer dedicated play areas near cabin colonies. "The beach area is wide and shallow in most areas. In close proximity to the store and snack shop (ICE CREAM)," notes a visitor about Green Lakes State Park.

Swimming safety: Different parks have varying water access conditions. "Verona Beach State Park Campground sits on the edge of Lake Oneida with a nice camper's beach and trail on the lake front," explains a visitor about waterfront facilities.

Interactive activities: Some parks provide educational programming. "The hiking includes an easy 3.1 mile loop with much shade around two glacier formed turquoise lakes (you need to see them in person to appreciate)," describes a Green Lakes visitor.

Bathroom proximity: Consider cabin location relative to restroom facilities. "Depending where your camp site is it's a bit of a walk to it," advises a Bowman Lake State Park visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Some cabin and RV areas require adjustment. "We had a back in site with a fire pit, picnic table, and no hook ups. It was gravel and not super level, but we made it work," notes a visitor to Bowman Lake State Park.

Hookup configurations: Verify utility placement when booking. "Check out which side the hookups are on. Some not situated on the right side so you'll need extra long cords," advises a visitor to Taughannock Falls State Park.

Supply stations: Several cabin areas maintain on-site supply shops. "Wood was for sale by camp host at 50 cents a piece," mentions a Verona Beach State Park visitor about firewood availability.

Site selection: Consider privacy levels when choosing cabin locations. "Sites in the middle section of the campground don't really have designated boundaries, while those around the edges are more traditionally divided," explains a Fillmore Glen visitor.
