What to do
Water activities at Lake Bluff RV Park: The park offers access to a small stream and pond for fishing. "We had a huge site near a little stream, overall the campground isn't very big with lots of seasonsals. Lots of activities for kids, and just around the corner from chimney bluff state park which are a must see!" notes a visitor at Lake Bluff RV Park.
Hiking at Webster Park: The park maintains several trail networks through woodland areas. "Camp sites are wooded and private. Very quiet and peaceful. Clean and well maintained.... will definitely visit again," reports a camper. Another visitor at Webster Park adds, "We did a last minute reservation and ended up loving the place. There was good separation between the campsites and the bathrooms and showers were clean."
Fishing opportunities: Multiple parks feature stocked ponds and streams with catch-and-release policies. "This KOA has all that you need for a relaxing family trip. It is close to the finger lakes, is clean, has kid activities and a pond where the fish are easy to catch with hotdogs!" shares a visitor at Canandaigua-Rochester KOA.
What campers like
Private wooded sites: Many campers appreciate the natural settings and privacy. A Webster Park visitor notes, "We go to webster park family campground several times a year for the past few years. We stay on the outer ring on that side of loop as it gives access to the woods and trails behind the sites."
Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathrooms and shower facilities rank high in importance. "Quite campground, well maintained, clean bathhouse, definitely will stay again," reports a visitor at South Shore RV Park.
Seasonal activities: Many parks offer scheduled events throughout the camping season. "Have been to lake buff twice this year and will definitely be back next year! The owners are so personable, accommodating and kind! Kids activities are great. Even with COVID they have stuff to keep them busy."
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Most cabin sites require advance booking, especially during peak summer months. "This campground offers a well maintained-non heated pool although costs $2 per person to use even for campers. Overall excellent campground," shares a camper at Junius Ponds.
Seasonal closures: Many facilities close from November through April due to winter weather conditions. "We stayed here during our home renovations and fell in love with the place. Kayak launches and boat marina nearby. The speed limit is 5 MPH and they mean it.... Kids on bikes and having a good time in the enormous play area."
Varying cabin amenities: Cabin features differ significantly between parks. "In most states, those without falls like Niagara, this state park would be the pride of the land. With three serious drops in as many miles, the Genesse River winds it's way through what locals call the 'Grand Canyon of the East.'"
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Choose sites near play facilities for easier supervision. "We stay close to the playground these days in our pop up usually at site 5 so our 5 and 9 year old can walk or ride to campground. We like site 1 as well. The campground is very quiet and very kid friendly to allow them to walk around and ride or scooter the loop alone."
Swimming options: Several parks offer swimming areas with varied depths. "I absolutely loved my time here with my son! Camp sites are private and have everything you need for tent camping! Showers and bathrooms clean! Sink available for dishes. Playground. Lots of beautiful trails!"
Kid-friendly activities: Many campgrounds schedule family events on weekends. "We spent father's day weekend at the KOA. Our kids rented cabins and some used tents and others came for the day. The campground has do much to do between swimming, golf, bike and paddle boat rentals. There's Ziplines with treetop walk and a bounce."
Tips from RVers
Hookup limitations: Electrical and water connections vary between cabin sites. "A little pricier than state campgrounds. This is a nice little park. I've stayed four times in 2021, for a much as 2 weeks at a time. Cell phone coverage is poor by Verizon and T-Mobile, and there is no WiFi, and no camp store (but the town of Webster is nearby)."
Seasonal camper presence: Many parks have significant numbers of seasonal residents. "A would be beautiful campground is over run with seasonal campers and their golf carts. These fine folks never stop driving and take the time to walk and enjoy the the beauty of their surroundings."
Site leveling challenges: Some cabin and RV sites require leveling equipment. "The non-electric sites were pretty much all on hilly areas, most would be impossible for an RV to get level, though there were a few that would have worked," notes a visitor at Lakeview Camping Area.
