Best Campgrounds near Lorraine, NY

Campgrounds near Lorraine, New York range from developed waterfront resorts to more primitive forest settings. The area is distinguished by its proximity to Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands region, with notable options including Sun Outdoors Association Island in Henderson Harbor and Southwick Beach State Park in Woodville. These established campgrounds accommodate various camping styles, including tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin rentals. Winona State Forest offers more primitive dispersed camping approximately 10 miles south of Lorraine for those seeking a more secluded experience, primarily suited for tent camping with minimal amenities.

Seasonal considerations significantly impact camping availability, with most established campgrounds operating from May through mid-October. Southwick Beach State Park and Westcott Beach State Park typically open mid-May and close in early fall, while Association Island KOA remains open slightly longer through mid-October. Winter access to dispersed sites in state forests may be limited by snow conditions and unplowed roads. Facilities vary considerably between campgrounds, with state parks and private resorts offering electric hookups, shower facilities, and water access, while dispersed sites provide minimal infrastructure. A visitor noted that "Lake Ontario is an amazing lake to be on and the water is pretty warm in the summer time. The waves don't get too big, so it is very safe for kids."

Waterfront camping represents a defining feature of the region, with Lake Ontario access consistently mentioned as a highlight in visitor reviews. Several campgrounds provide direct access to beaches, swimming areas, and boat launches. Many visitors value the region's water recreation opportunities, with one camper reporting, "Great location offering both sunrise and sunsets over the water of Lake Ontario. Loved the access to the water for our dogs to swim and for beautiful views." For families, developed campgrounds like Southwick Beach and Westcott Beach State Parks offer playgrounds, picnic facilities, and swimming areas with lifeguards during summer months. The proximity to the Thousand Islands region also allows campers to explore additional water-based recreation opportunities and cultural attractions within a short drive from most campgrounds.

Yogi Bears Jellystone Park Camp Resort at Mexico

    Unfortunate

Pros: river is awesome, wading, catching crayfish, cooling off. Staff were consistently friendly. Sites were flat, easy to level travel trailer. Plenty of kid activities, foam party, obstacle course, balloon launch, etc. Large store. Game room. Bathrooms (at least near the playground) were spacious, with toilet, sink, shower. Cons: signs/photo ops were crooked/loose/broken. Planted annual flowers were dead, overgrown with weeds. Miniature golf holes were falling apart. Bounce pad had a hole in it. The sand from around the edge was blowing from that hole into kids eyes, nose, mouth. Bathrooms were dirty; each has a 2-roll toilet paper dispenser; by early evening two stalls had zero TP left. Tent sites had used toilet paper along the tree line where others had used it as a bathroom. Fire pits were old tire rims, which worked, but unable to cook anything on it

    Mayfair Campground NY

    Mostly for seasonals

We called to make last minute reservations for a one night stopover enroute to Vermont. The person on the phone was friendly and accommodating to our needs. When we arrived after hours, the entrance was gated with a card reader access which we did not have a card for. We tried calling back several times but a recording said that the line was busy. Luckily, another camper let us in. There are no signs to direct you which way to go and the sites are poorly marked. With some help from friendly campers we were eventually able to find our site. The sites are have a poorly graveled parking spot and the ground is a little soft. Restrooms are basic and minimal, having a single toilet and sink, a tiny mirror and hand dryer, however it was fairly clean and functional. I was told that there are new owners and they are making improvements

    1000 Islands Campground

    Close to Alexandria Bay

We've camped there twice on extended weekends to visit the Bay and castles. Golf carts are welcome. The only issue was that people were not picking up after their dogs. We saw and had multiple dog piles in our campsite and on other parts of the campground.

The ice cream shop Gals is wonderful!! PJs Ratrace had incredible fish fries. Both places are very near the campground.

Green Pond - Bonaparte State Forest

Great little spot to get away

This is our go to area close to town but still just want to get away from it all. DEC is nice and stop and talk to the campers. There is a doc down the road for boats and fishing!

    Wellesley Island State Park Campground

    Family of 4 Tent Camping

We stayed at site Bluejay 3. Very spacious and private. We reserved the site 3 days prior and still found most waterfront campsites already reserved. Luckily, 2 waterfront sites were available at Bluejay 2 and 3 when we arrived, so we spent most of the time there fishing and canoeing. Bathrooms were a short walk down the road and mostly clean. Will certainly be back!

Bluff Camping Area — Fair Haven Beach State Park

Shaded camping with Great Lake access

I booked this site for one night and ended up staying three. Trying to avoid the heat, I was relieved that the shaded electric camping area staved off most of the days heat. I was in site 63 the first night and 68 the other two. 63 has more shade but 68 is right next to the bathroom and water spout if that’s important. I was able to find shade.

Some people may find the sites too close together, I didn’t mind since I’m solo camping and feel a bit of safety with closer neighbors. The loop was majority RVs and campers but it was still quiet all night and until late morning.

The showers and bathrooms are mostly clean and well stocked and there is a dedicated sink outside the building for dishes.

What I really loved is how far into the park the camping is, you’re really surrounded by woods. There is also excellent and easy access to Lake Ontario.

The park store has firewood, ice, and lots of other items like corn hole for rent. There is also a small boat shanty for boat rentals.

    SutterCreek Campground

    Close to the Ren Fest.

Sutter Creek is a 4 minute drive to the Renaissance Festival. The camp was very quiet and the owners were friendly and helpful. The activity room is for seasonal people only. The showers get locked at night, so prepare to showers in the AM. There are swings and a tether ball for the kids. Golf carts look to be welcome there, but it's not that big.

Streamside RV Park & Golf Course

    Great place!

This is a privately owned very nice campground! The owners take pride in their business and the grounds are meticulously kept. Everyone here is a golfer and there are no children.

Guide to Lorraine

Lorraine, New York sits at an elevation of approximately 410 feet, nestled between Lake Ontario and the Tug Hill Plateau region. The area experiences distinct seasons with heavy winter snowfall from lake effect patterns and warm, pleasant summers ideal for water activities. Camping options span from established lakefront sites to more rustic forest settings, with most campgrounds operating from May through mid-October.

What to do

Fishing access points: Several campgrounds provide direct access to prime fishing spots. At Bedford Creek Marina & Campground, you can fish directly from the property, with one camper noting it's in a "great area for fishing, bass, trout, salmon and walleye."

Trail exploration: The Winona State Forest offers multiple trail systems for hiking during summer months. At Winona Forest CCC Camp, visitors find "beautiful trees and quiet trails" with one reviewer mentioning, "This is a hub for several snow mobile, cross country ski, and snow shoe trails."

What campers like

Lakefront views: Many campsites offer direct water views. At Westcott Beach State Park Campground, campers appreciate sites "along Lake Ontario where you can see amazing sunsets," with one visitor noting, "We always camp in the plateau across the road from the main park area-sites are huge, clean bathrooms and a nice park right in the circle."

Spacious sites: Selkirk Shores State Park Campground offers various camping loops with different atmospheres. A reviewer explained, "This campground is 4 different loops- A loop is like the loop for people here for fishing, B loop is the mellower crowd, and C and D were our nightmares: mass chaos, children running amok."

Recreational programs: Some parks offer organized activities for visitors. A camper at Selkirk Shores mentioned they have "a great recreation program for the kids. While we were there they had a reptile exhibit with huge snakes and crocodiles, another day they had tie dyeing t-shirts, other days they had bingo."

What you should know

Site differences: At Sun Outdoors Association Island, consider which side of the island you prefer. One visitor recommends "the sunrise size. The sunset is of course beautiful but sunrise sites are much bigger and can lead right to the water which is much nicer. It's a lot less windy and easier to be in the water."

Seasonal facilities: Some amenities close down in late summer. At Brennan Beach Campground, a visitor noted, "We went late summer so it was becoming offseason. Most amenities close down. Pool, swimming at Lake Ontario beach, etc."

Bug preparation: Insect activity can be significant near the lake. At Sun Outdoors Association Island, a camper warned about "the amount of BUGS! Millions (not exaggerating) of midges and mayflies swarming the grounds from Lake Ontario."

Tips for camping with families

Recreation options: Look for campgrounds with built-in activities. Brennans Bay Campground includes "a nice pool, pavilion, store and kids playground with a basketball court," making it convenient for families with children of various ages.

Tips from RVers

Check-in assistance: Some campgrounds offer arrival support. At Sun Outdoors Association Island, a visitor appreciated that "at check in they take you to your spot and help you get settled in. That is a marriage saver."

Site spacing: Consider how close you want to be to neighbors. A reviewer at Brennan Beach Campground noted, "Sites are close together, but kind of what is expected at an RV resort," while another at Sun Outdoors Association Island mentioned their site was "a little narrower than others based on our proximity to a corner."

Utility connections: Most established campgrounds near Lorraine offer various hookup options. At Stoneys Pineville Campground, electric hookups are available, though sites with full water and sewer connections are more common at larger resorts like Brennan Beach and Sun Outdoors Association Island.
