Anglers and hikers find multiple recreation options at Willow Creek Campground, where full hookup sites accommodate RVs up to 50 feet within Heron Lake State Park. The campground sits at 7,000 feet elevation in northwest New Mexico, with gravel roads leading to sites that offer varying degrees of shade and privacy depending on location.
Sites feel well-spaced throughout the property, with exterior sites on some loops providing western views for sunset watching. Lora H. notes that "Lot 1 & 2 are the only lots with full hook ups" in the Willow Creek section, priced at $14 per night during her visit. Most sites include concrete picnic tables, fire rings, and access to vault toilets, though bathroom facilities close during winter months and don't reopen until mid-May.
The lake itself presents a significant consideration for visitors. Water levels have dropped substantially in recent years due to drought conditions, leaving boat ramps unusable and creating a considerable walk to reach the shoreline. "One was to the lake, which was sadly almost empty," Lora H. observed during her stay. Despite low water levels, fishing remains possible, and the receding water has exposed fossil-hunting opportunities in the dried clay deposits.
Cell service runs spotty with Verizon showing 1-2 bars, and the nearest supply stores sit several miles away, making advance provisioning essential. Reservations are required for all sites, which can be made online despite the limited cell coverage. Winter camping restricts access to the Willow Creek loop only, while other areas close seasonally. Wildlife sightings include deer, coyotes, and bears, adding to the remote atmosphere that appeals to campers seeking solitude in northern New Mexico's high country.
