Best RV Parks & Resorts near Wagon Mound, NM

RV campgrounds around Wagon Mound provide varied options for motorhome travelers seeking full hookup sites. Angel Nest RV Retreat in Eagle Nest offers both 50-amp electric service and full hookups on spacious sites with mountain views. The Maxwell RV Park maintains four sites with 30-amp electric, sewer, and water connections, suitable for smaller rigs. "Mostly pull through sites with full hookups, looking out on the Eagle Nest Lake and the mountains around you. Gravel roads, with sites sharing utilities between them," noted one traveler about Weathers RV Park, which operates seasonally from May through October. Vegas RV and Storage in Las Vegas features 30-amp service, water, and sewer hookups in a more compact setting with limited spacing between motorhome sites.

Many RV parks in the region require advance reservations during summer months when fishing and mountain recreation draw larger crowds. Road conditions vary significantly when traveling to higher elevation campgrounds, with several reviews mentioning rough, winding roads that may challenge longer rigs. Cell service remains inconsistent throughout the area, particularly at campgrounds near Eagle Nest Lake and in canyon locations. Year-round options are limited, with several parks closing during winter months. Dump stations are available at most established RV parks, though water access at these facilities may be restricted during colder months. A review noted that "This time of year water is shut off except for one spigot in entire park. No water at dump station," highlighting the importance of filling tanks before arrival during shoulder seasons.

    Lake 13-Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge

    Remote and quiet

A bit of the way off the paved road.  Do NOT follow GPS, follow the signs for the Maxwell wildlife refuge.

Camping is right next to the lake in an open field with picnic tables and trash.

We arrived and there was a schoolie and a van.  Later that evening a class A pulled in next to us but there was plenty of room.  There were some flies but not enough to bother with.

We have a 43’ fifth wheel and made it there with no problem so definitely big rig friendly

    Angel Fire RV Resort

    Spacious, clean, luxurious!

Very nice RV resort! Full hookup, concrete level pads, huge pull thru sites, great for large rigs. A lot of amenities: playground, tennis courts, hot tub, pool, clubhouse. Very polite and attentive personnel! Only a few miles (10min driving) from the ski slopes. If winter camping - heated water hose is highly recommended! During especially chilly nights be prepared to fill up your fresh water tank and turn off and disconnect the hose from the external water supply! If it is frozen overnight, you will be subject to $150 fee.

    El Porvenir Campground

    Fantastic Sangre de Cristos Camping

We wish we could’ve stayed here longer! We loved this campground. Came here in May 2021 on a bit of faith, as we couldn’t find much info on whether our 28' rig would be okay. The road up from Montezuma/Las Vegas is very winding and sometimes close to one lane, but we had no problems when there was oncoming traffic. (Note the campground host had a class A) The campground is small and quiet. 14 sites, several for tents only, and a few pull through. First come first serve. We were lucky that the campground was empty when we arrived, so we had our choice of spots. Not all sites would’ve fit our trailer. No hookups, no water, pit toilets only. No cell service. Our kids loved playing in the gorgeous mountain stream adjacent to the campground.(Just watch out for broken glass, we found quite a bit) Would’ve definitely stayed longer if we had time

Ponderosa Campground — Cimarron Canyon State Park

    Easy access, Level, No services

Easy road in from I25. Basically a big level parking lot with sites on the outer loop that easily accommodate big rigs. One side has a view of the mountains. The other side has a view of the forest and creek. No power. No water hookups but there is a central spigot that can be used to refill. No black dump anywhere in the park. Good Verizon and T-Mobile signal. Cool weather even in July. Despite the negatives I loved the area. NOTE - most park trails are closed until the end of July due to calving season.

Eagle Nest Lake State Park Campground

This truly is the land of enchantment!

Perfectly located on a picturesque a beautiful lake with the Sangre de Cristo mountains as a backdrop. The drive into the park isn’t that impressive, but it just makes me more appreciative of the beauty of this place, which is set behind several RV/trailer parks. The campground is small with ample space between sites. Each site has a gravel pad, covered picnic table set on a concrete pad and with a view of the serene and pristine lake. There’s a pier and boat ramp, a day use area and an office/store. The campground gate closes at night, with an on site ranger.

Awesome wildlife in the area. The deer would come by every evening and the prairie dogs were constantly entertaining. There’s a hiking trail worth checking out too.

This was the perfect place to spend the Fourth of July holiday. The parade in Eagle Nest was perfect small town America! Must see in the area is the Vietnam Veteran’s Museum, the Cumbres & Toltec railroad and nearby Chama and Angel Fire.

Eagle Nest Lake State Park Campground

    Wide Open Spaces

Eagles Nest Lake State park campsites are pretty wide open like the valley it is in. There is a nice cement pad with an awning and fire pit. Not much else and I wouldn't recommend it for tent campers. There were a few people braving the cool nights and crisp mornings. Water available when you drive in and that is about it. So plan on boondocking. Our site was level and drive through. The drive through sites are not huge so if you have a big rig you might want one of the back in sites. The sky was beautiful at night with the milky way visable. If it wasn't so cold I would of been taking photos. Access to the lake is a relatively short walk and may change if the lake wasn't so low.

    Las Vegas/New Mexico KOA Journey

    Perfect spot in a pinch

My wife and I stayed here 1 night in put 30ft travel trailer. End of October.

Called the staff the day if our stay because we weren't going to make it to our final destination. They had plenty of spots left and we were able to book one. Staff was friendly and accommodating.

Spots were farily close to one another but well maintained. Had electric and water at our spot which worked fine. It was a pull-through spot and was easy enough to access.

The public use facilities were clean enough.

I'd stay here again if I needed a similar accommodation.

Guide to Wagon Mound

Wagon Mound RV camping sites operate at elevations between 6,000-8,400 feet, which creates significant seasonal temperature variations. Winter nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing even in early fall and late spring, with summer daytime highs typically ranging from 75-85°F. Most area campgrounds have gravel pads rather than paved surfaces, which affects stability during wet conditions.

What to do

Hiking nearby mountains: Pendaries RV Resort serves as a good base for mountain exploration. "We hiked to the abandoned turquoise mine and took in the views from atop the hill," reports Dennis P. about his stay at Pendaries RV Resort. The turquoise mine trail is moderate difficulty and approximately 2.5 miles round-trip.

Lake activities: Eagle Nest Lake provides fishing and boating opportunities within short driving distance of several campgrounds. "The lake and boat launch are just down the road," notes Moe F. about their stay at Angel Nest RV Retreat. Fishing licenses cost $25 for non-residents for a 5-day permit.

Winter sports: Angel Fire skiing areas remain accessible from nearby camping facilities. "Brought my teardrop camper to do a couple days at Angel Fire. RV park is about 5min from the AF parking lot," explains Jeff K. about Monte Verde RV Park, making it convenient for winter visitors who need easy access to slopes.

What campers like

Community amenities: Several campgrounds offer gathering spaces for social activities. "They have live music on Friday and Saturday nights, and a farmers market that set up on property on Wednesday," reports Rachel H. about her experience at Golden Eagle RV Park, which also features an on-site restaurant.

Mountain views: Campsites throughout the region provide scenic vistas even from established RV parks. "Angel Fire RV Resort has beautiful views of the mountains... beautiful grounds, the bath houses very nice and modern, very nice hot tub, beautiful clubhouse," describes Tom B. about Angel Fire RV Resort.

Quiet environment: Many campers appreciate the peaceful settings in this rural area. "It's quiet, beautiful, and welcoming. Wonderful pull through sites with plenty of space!" shares Sheri W. about Pendaries RV Resort. Most campgrounds maintain quiet hours from 10PM-7AM, with generator restrictions in place at many locations.

What you should know

Limited winter facilities: Seasonal closures and restricted services affect winter camping options. "It is a mid-week, winter stay so they were very chill and not strict about check-in/out," notes Jeff K. about Monte Verde RV Park, though many other facilities shut down entirely from November through April.

Variable bathroom conditions: Facility quality ranges dramatically between campgrounds. "The bathrooms are the best we have ever seen and the water pressure allows you to take a very nice shower," reports Madeline S. about Pendaries RV Resort. In contrast, at Sierra Bonita Cabins & RV Park, a camper noted less positive conditions.

Town proximity: Some campgrounds offer walking access to nearby services. "Convenient to grocery store and restaurants - within a short walk," explains Jeffrey A. about his stay at Cimarron Inn and RV Park, making it practical for resupplying without moving your vehicle.

Tips for camping with families

Recreation access: Some RV parks provide special arrangements for family activities. "They have an arrangement that allows campers to use recreational facilities in town such as the pool. Walk around the lake, rent a canoe, kids activities (bungie bouncing, rock climbing)," explains Colorado C. about Angel Fire RV Resort.

Budget options: Family camping costs vary significantly between facilities. "Good price for the experience. 25$ for a tent and 2 people. 5$ charge for each additional person," reports David I. about Angel Nest RV Retreat, making it more affordable than resort-style options that charge $45-60 per night.

Playground access: Families with children should prioritize campgrounds with dedicated play areas. "They have pickleball, bocce ball, a playground, dog park," notes Jenny W. about camping at Angel Fire RV Resort, which maintains a central playground suitable for children ages 5-12.

Tips from RVers

Winter preparations: Cold temperatures require special considerations for RV water systems. "If winter camping - heated water hose is highly recommended! During especially chilly nights be prepared to fill up your fresh water tank and turn off and disconnect the hose from the external water supply!" advises Alan about staying at Angel Fire RV Resort, noting a potential $150 fee for frozen pipes.

Site spacing considerations: RV parks near Wagon Mound vary significantly in site density. "This is a funky, no frills place to park and spend the night. The sites are close together, and little separation between sites, so no privacy," explains Michael L. about Vegas RV and Storage, where sites are placed approximately 10-15 feet apart.

Utility arrangements: Setup of hookups differs between facilities. "Gravel roads, with sites sharing utilities between them," notes Gabe G. about Weathers RV Park, which requires longer hoses and cords for some sites to reach shared utility poles positioned between every two camping spaces.
