OHV's are not allowed to be operated within the Park boundaries.

Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove is prohibited. The use of devices fueled solely by liquid petroleum or LPG fuels that can be turned on and off is allowed. Such devices can only be used in an area that is barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within three (3) feet of the device. Smoking is prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle or building.

July 1st through TBD, Rio Chama Trailhead is closed for repairs.

Please bring proof of your reservation with you to your campsite.

Brushy Point Campground near Heron Lake State Park in New Mexico features terrain with a mix of forested areas and open spaces. Temperatures can range from lows of 20°F in winter to highs of 85°F in summer. Nearby attractions include Heron Lake, known for fishing and boating, and the scenic trails of the Carson National Forest.

Heron Lake State Park

Heron Lake State Park campground has 250 developed campsites sites for tents, trailers and RVs along the shoreline of beautiful Heron Lake. There are seven camping areas to choose from including: Blanco, Brushy Point, Island View, La Laja, Rock Ridge, Ponderosa and Willow Creek. If you prefer primitive camping, you can also choose from several along the lake shore.

There are 54 campsites with electric hookups and all campsites have a table, fire ring and grate Our favorite Heron Lake State Park campsites are sites 74 and 91 in the Brushy Point area.

Heron Lake’s developed camping areas have level gravel sites with water and electric hookups. All of the camping areas have potable water. The Blanco camping area also has flush toilets and hot showers. The other camping areas have varying amounts of modern conveniences.

Heron Lake State Park – Area Recreation The lake is ideal for sailing, kayaking, canoeing and windsurfing, as well as fishing for record-size trout. The Park has been designated a “quiet lake” where boats operate at no-wake speeds only. The Park also has a visitor center, beach, marina, boat ramp and dock.

Ice fishing is popular in winter, as is snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Hiking and fishing trails can bee accessed along the gorgeous Rio Chama from the dramatic caprock stairway near Heron Dam. The 5.5-mile trail, which crosses the river by suspension bridge, affords panoramic views and an adventurous route to neighboring El Vado Lake.

Directions

Directions are as follows: From Albuquerque, NM, drive north on interstate 25 for 58 miles to Santa Fe, NM. From Santa Fe, drive north on US84/285 for 22 miles to Espanola, NM. At Espanola, cross the Rio Grande River and go north on US 84. (US84/285 forks in Espanola) Follow signs to Abiquiu, Tierra Amarilla and Chama. Continue north on US 84 for approximately 70 miles to Tierra Amarilla. At Tierra Amarilla, continue for about 2 miles to State Road 95, turn on State Road 95 and head west for 6miles. The entrance to all campgrounds will be located between mile marker 6 and mile marker 11 on State Road 95. Visitor center is located ½ mile past mile marker 6.
