Stokes State Forest offers dedicated campgrounds for horse enthusiasts located just 40 miles from Mahwah, New Jersey in Sussex County. The forest's diverse terrain spans elevations from 400 to 1,653 feet, creating varied riding experiences through mountain ridges, valleys, and wetlands. Trail riding options connect to a regional network with terrain suitable for both novice and experienced riders.
What to do
Lakeside fishing and paddling: At Ocquittunk in Stokes State Forest, campers can fish in the small lake and nearby streams. "We stayed at site #T007... was a short walk from the car to the site, but so worth it for many reasons. The site itself is huge and we were able to position our tent facing the lake, it was beautiful!" shares Kara L.
Hiking to scenic viewpoints: Trek to the fire tower for panoramic views of the Delaware Valley. "We drove down the road and were able to get in a nice 5 mile hike up to the fire tower. Due to cooler temps there were really no bugs to complain about while camping," notes Josh S.
Winter cabin stays: Book a rustic cabin with wood stoves for cold-weather camping. "Rented a cabin in November (#009) and again in December (#008) of 2021. I favored Cabin 8, the kitchen and bathroom were separated from the main room. The cabins are reasonably priced and well-appointed, if a bit rustic," reports W L.
What campers like
Spacious, private sites: The campgrounds offer room to spread out. "Individual sites were generously sized, shady, and relatively private thanks to the vegetation. Some sites are along the lake. The campground seemed pretty full in August," writes Harry H. about Lake Ocquittunk.
Clean facilities: Bathhouses and toilets are well-maintained. "The bathrooms are clean and nicely placed. The sites had a fire ring with a cooking grate and a picnic table and were well spaced out from other sites," notes Catherine S.
Proximity to Appalachian Trail: Hikers appreciate direct access to major trails. "The AT runs right through the camp. I love this place!!!" says Shawn B. about Camp Mohican Outdoor Center located nearby.
What you should know
Horse trailer parking: Designated areas accommodate vehicles with horse trailers, though space can be limited during peak weekends.
Water sources on trails: Several marked streams cross bridle paths, providing natural water sources for horses during rides.
Varying campground styles: Different camping areas offer distinct experiences. "There are four campgrounds that are all pretty different, we stayed at Shotwell across from the pond. For the most part, each campsite has its own porta potty or it shared with a couple other sites," explains Adeline M. about Stokes State Forest.
Limited cell service: Many equestrian trail sections have poor or no cellular connectivity, so bring physical maps.
Tips for camping with families
Choose sites strategically: Select locations based on bathroom proximity. "We selected site T219. It was a solid choice: private but close to the toilet and water. Some sites located around the opposite side of the ring back up to a babbling brook," suggests Trip Over Life.
Blueberry picking: Summer visitors can gather wild berries near water. "If you're there in the summer, I'd recommend taking a kayak around the lake and filling it with wild blueberries," recommends Dan X.
Wildlife education: The forest offers opportunities to teach children about bears, ticks, and local ecology. "Remember, this is bear country so proper food storage is a must. Bear lockers are not provided. The area also has ticks and rattlesnakes," cautions Trip Over Life.
Tips from RVers
Limited hookup options: Most equestrian sites near Mahwah have minimal or no electrical hookups for RVs.
Site selection for rigs: When bringing horses and RVs, reserve early for appropriate spaces. "We stayed at the campsite at Lake Ocquittunk Area. Campsite was very spacious and had a platform where we were able to fit two tents. There was plenty of space on the site for more tents," mentions E. M. V. about Liberty Harbor RV Park, noting how space availability makes a difference.
Dump station access: Sanitary facilities for RVs are available but may require a drive from horse camping areas.
