What to do
Archery practice: 15-minute drive from Turkey Swamp Park to the dedicated range where beginners can learn basics. "Plenty to do over a 2 night stay. Archery, boating, fishing, and hiking," notes Dan W. The range provides hay targets suitable for various skill levels.
Ice skating: Winter option at Turkey Swamp Park for cold-weather visitors. "Bring your bow and shoot at the hay barrels. Ice skate on the lake in the winter or just enjoy a gorgeous walk in the woods," says Patrick M. The lake freezes sufficiently for skating typically from late December through February.
Cycling to Atlantic beaches: 8-mile ride from Allaire State Park through scenic back roads to Ocean Grove. "A really nice bike ride to Ocean Grove and other beach towns. There are outlets in the bathroom and someone put a fullass drip coffee machine in one of the sinks. I did not refuse a fresh cup of brew," shares Dan X. The route includes minimal elevation changes, making it suitable for casual cyclists.
Tubing on Wading River: 2-hour float from Hawkins Bridge to Wading Pines Camping Resort. "Have someone drop you off at Hawkins Bridge and float down to the campground. A little over 2 hour ride," advises Stacy D. The slow-moving current requires no paddling, just occasional steering around fallen trees.
What campers like
Private waterfront sites: Sites #8 at Atsion Family Camp with direct lake access. "I always get site #8 and it has an amazing view of the lake. While camping at atsion family campground, you have free access to the recreation center (the beach and some trails)," explains Alexa L. Sites near water book 3-4 months in advance for summer weekends.
Spacious pull-through sites: All sites at Turkey Swamp Park designed for easy access with minimal backing required. "This campground has all pull-through sites. Nicely wooded with water and electric. Be sure to bring extra hose because the water spigot is a distance from the electric," advises Jean T. Sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet with additional tent space.
Winter camping opportunities: Heated bathrooms at Brendan Byrne State Forest make cold-weather stays comfortable. "We found this campground one night when we were in NJ. It ended up snowing that night. the bathrooms were clean and warm. There is a lot to do in the area," shares Lisa S. Sites remain accessible year-round with plowed access roads after snowfall.
What you should know
Insect management: Ticks prevalent May-September at multiple campgrounds near Seaside Park. "By the 2nd day I had 3 ticks on me. My dog had one and by the end my husband had 2. That was so crazy because we were just sitting by our camper," warns Laura Y. about her experience at Turkey Swamp Park. Light-colored clothing and daily tick checks recommended.
Water pressure variations: Sites at Sea Pirate Campground experience significant drops during peak usage. "We had a problem with our site: extremely low water pressure, often below 20 PSI. It was so low at times, that we couldn't take showers or flush the toilet," reports Matt S. Filling your fresh water tank before busy periods helps manage this issue.
Sandy campsites: Most sites within 20 miles of Seaside Park built on native sandy soil. "Sand sites. Overpriced. Tight site & hard to get in/out for big rigs," notes Beth R. about Adventure Bound Camping. Bringing outdoor mats and brooms helps manage sand tracking into tents and RVs.
Tips for camping with families
Halloween festivities: October weekends at Sea Pirate Campground feature extensive decorations and activities. "Halloween fun was really good. Many kids grade school and elementary level enjoyed the dance. The only downside was the hayride was supposed to end at 10 according to the campers app but ended more towards 8:30," shares Stephanie H. Reservations for Halloween weekends need to be made 6-8 months in advance.
Bug-free periods: Mid-to-late September offers comfortable temperatures with significantly reduced mosquito activity. "We went camping with our 2- and 3-year-old kids. We were worried about bugs, but we didn't even use mosquito repellent and didn't get a single bite! The campground was super clean too," reports Jaewook P. about Turkey Swamp Park.
Campsite selection for privacy: Loop B at Brendan Byrne State Forest offers better separation between sites. "Nice and quiet, sites are spaced out enough to offer privacy. Good trees for hammocking! Plenty of room for a few tents at each site," advises Lindsay D. These sites typically book more slowly than waterfront locations.
Tips from RVers
Water hookup placement: Turkey Swamp Park sites require extra-long hoses due to unusual spigot placement. "Be sure to bring extra hose because the water spigot is a distance from the electric. Sites are level and well maintained," advises Jean T. A 50-foot drinking water hose often needed for full hookup sites.
Sandy site preparation: Before leveling an RV at most Pine Barrens campgrounds, placing wooden blocks under stabilizers prevents sinking. "The entire park was dirty sand with weeds growing everywhere," notes Matt S. about his experience at Adventure Bound Camping. The sand remains stable when dry but becomes problematic after rainfall.
Narrow interior roads: Several campgrounds near Seaside Park have limited turning radius for larger rigs. "This place is not big-rig friendly, difficult to navigate some of the turns in our 45' motorhome and taking scratches from tree branches that should be trimmed," warns Matt S. Rigs over 35 feet should request sites near main roads to minimize difficult turns.
