Sand Mine Road #110 Dispersed Camping

Hikers and off-highway vehicle enthusiasts use Sand Mine Road #110 Dispersed Camping as a staging area for exploring the rugged terrain around Overton, Nevada. This Bureau of Reclamation site sits on gravel and rocky ground with scattered camping spots accessible by both standard vehicles and larger rigs, though the road surface can present challenges.

The area spreads across open desert with views extending toward the Moapa Valley and surrounding mesas. Campers find the space less crowded than nearby Snowbird Mesa, with plenty of room to spread out among the dispersed sites. "Wide open spaces. Not crowded even on a Saturday night in May," notes Joyce H.. Cell service reaches most areas, and many sites feature rock fire rings built by previous visitors.

The 14-day camping limit allows extended stays for exploring Valley of Fire State Park and Lake Mead recreation areas. Some sites offer protection from road noise, though intermittent sounds from nearby mining operations occur during daytime hours. Night skies provide clear stargazing opportunities despite distant town lights. The rocky surface and exposed setting make this better suited for self-contained camping rather than tent setups.

Access requires navigating Sand Mine Road, which becomes more challenging when wet. Greg L. reports "no water, trash dumpsters or fire rings" provided by management, so campers must bring their own supplies and pack out all waste. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures, with summer heat reaching the mid-90s even in April.

For a different experience, Poverty Flats & Snowbird Mesa provides seasonal camping with extended stay options closer to the main road.

Many campers appreciated the spacious, uncrowded dispersed camping with good site spacing and quiet atmosphere. Basic amenities with some fire rings available but no water or facilities. Easy access location near Valley of Fire State Park.

Wide Open Spaces

Tons of spaces here lots of places to camp. Tremendous panoramic views. Middle of April it was already in the mid nineties and only dropping to seventy at night if you are a weather person.

Great views, clean, can be noisy

2nd visit, great location with views of the Moapa Valley and convenient to Valley of Fire SP and Mormon Mesa. Amazing views and even better stargazing here

While there are always a lot of bigger rigs near the road, there are plenty of sites here and we did not had to look far for a site.

Only downside can be some extra noise from the road, and the mine across the road (I think it's a mine) but it's intermittent and can be ignored. Noise is almost non-existent at night.

Easy to find and relax after seeing the valley of fire

Easy to find spot right off the main road. If you go through the valley of fire watch for mountain goats. Pretty open spots, fire rings made of rocks, and if you like to walk around looking at rocks there are some neat ones lol Side note: Valley of fire does not take some park passes fyi, at the time they said no America the beautiful passes. I had to go through there to get here but it was beautiful.

Accessible

This was the perfect overnight spot as we got in too late for a camp spot on Valley of Fire State Park. It was wide open with a fire ring and great views. Plenty of spots to choose from.

Open rocky area dispersed

This free dispersed area is adjacent to the more famous Snowbird Mesa site around the hill closer to Overton. This area is also managed by the Bureau of Rec but has a 14d camping limit, whereas the Snowbird Mesa area has a season long camping from Oct 1 to may 1. The Sand Mine road #110 area is less crowded and more spread out. Cell signal is still good. No water, trash dumpsters or fire rings. Area is somewhat harsh and rocky surface.

Very nice and accessible

I absolutely loved this camping area. There are so many along this highway anyway, but this one was definitely the easiest to get to. I was in a Chevrolet Colorado (not 4 wheel or all wheel drive) and it did just fine. I was here during November so it was fairly dry so no problem with wet roads. This dispersed camping is marked with a sign and when I was here, there were plenty of spots available, most with fire rings made from rocks.

Nice wide open camping spot

Dispersed camping. Wide open spaces. Not crowded even on a Saturday night in May. Easy to find a spot away from people. Quiet. Can see lights from nearby town but also excellent views of the stars. Road says 4 wheel drive but at least when it’s dry you can get in. Horses have been here so could horse camp.

Wide Open Spaces

Perfect dispersed camping spot outside Valley of Fire State Park and close to Lake Mead. Either up the road is Poverty Flats, but we found this to be waaaay less crowded and equally awesome. We camped next to a little canyon which was fun to explore with the kiddo when we were just hanging around the campsite.
