The two closest roads coming in from the West are blocked off and labeled no unauthorized vehicles. This is due to the construction of the new neighborhoods and they probably annexed the area. You could probably access it from the East but I have no idea how many miles it would be in from where you would come in.

I stayed only one night here in 2022 while traveling through. It was a pretty drive through rural western Nevada, which ended in a four mile graded dirt road. I was driving an SUV with high clearance, but the road is suitable for RVs if you take it slow. Both campgrounds are RV suitable. This one does not have hook ups, but quail run does. The facilities are very new. Each site has a covered picnic table It is not a great tent camping area in my opinion because it is a desert loop and you are out in the open. I slept in my SUV. The area itself is beautiful though, and I need to make another, longer stop there and at the nearby "elbow" unit, which is more remote.
Tried to go to the school bus thing but road got too technical so camped out near a mine, epic!
The road kinda sucks but VC is a good time. It was nice other than the road. Please remember to pack everything out, there was a lot of trash I had to pick up that was left behind by others.
This location is so convenient and easy! Pull through sites that can fit any Rv. Everyone at the front desk was kind and very responsive. The operations manager was so kind as to pick up and deliver our empty propane tanks upon our arrival! Views of the Walker over from the walking trail were perfect. Kids welcome, two nice playgrounds and a pickleball court that they provided rackets for. Each site also has a small grass area. Would definitely come back!!
We’re regulars at this spot, pitching our tent on the south side, though there's plenty of room for the RV crowd too. The best part? You can camp right by the water! Weekdays offer serene silence, but come the weekend, it’s party and generator central—so bring your earplugs! Pit toilets might not sound glamorous, but these are shockingly tidy and bug-free. Shade might be limited around here, but play a little hide and seek, and you’ll find some cool spots to chill under. For the peeps who prefer having a "camp spot", there’s a semi-developed area with water hook-ups(electricity’s a mystery to us—we’re old-school tenters). Need to stay connected? No worries, T-mobile’s 5G has got your back everywhere in the park—essential for us road warriors. A little heads-up though: always, always check the weather first. We learned the hard way during a three-day wind festival, and, well, RIP old tent—hello, shiny new shelter!
Site had a pre-made fire pit. There’s a few spots here to choose from, although if you’re looking for privacy they are somewhat close together. There were 3 others here when we came. Lots of ATVs here. Overall pretty good for a nights stay, especially if you’re in to history!
This was our first outing as trailer campers. We know about WHRVP thanks to the VORRA desert race which is right outside the park in the fall. We wanted somewhere with full hookups for our first trip to get the hang of things, and this was perfect. I talked to Mark on the phone, he was friendly and helpful, and even more so when we arrived. Check in was easy, Mark showed us the spot and gave a couple tips on parking. He told us about the clubhouse which had flush toilet bathrooms, showers, and a little library sitting area. We definitely used the clubhouse, because you know rule number one of trailer camping. Our site had a picnic table, but there weren’t many of them. No fire rings. We can’t wait to come back in September for the next race. Thanks again, Mark!
I love the quietness of this spot and the view is wonderful! The only thing I don’t like is that they took the port-a-potty out, quite possibly for the cold season.
5+
I tried driving up the other day, but couldn’t make it due to rocks. The road starts out as a nice, easy fire road, gets a little rocky, and then by mile 6 or 7 it goes full blown rock garden. SxS’s were going through it slowly, if that helps.
Virginia City seems like a fun little town, though. And the area itself is pretty cool, just couldn’t make it all the way.
Great experience all around. We pulled a 36' toy hauler, and we were able to find a pull through spot. However, it was pretty tight, and I wouldn't recommend that large of a trailer if you don't want a few scratches from bushes. The park ranger was extremely friendly and the campground was well kept.
Scout camp is on the Carson river and within the tall cottonwoods. Camp in the shade or out in the open if it’s very windy as the trees can shed branches. Garbage collection and pit toilets. Nice trail along the River.
As of October 2023 the access road to scout camp was washed out. But there is dispersed camping on the terrace to the south.
Just as described. Entertaining to watch but noisy. We camped just inside the gate. Free Tuesday and Wednesday. Otherwise it’s weekly fee or annual pass. Garbage pickup, fire rings, pit toilets. Loud fireworks after dark.
Nice campground off of Interstaate.
Not such a good place. Housing construction getting very close. Lots of local foot traffic. Didn't feel comfortable here, almost felt as I was intruding. It does beat driving around aimlessly searching for a spit, plus its rather close to freeway. You have to leave somewhat early. Lots of joggers and mountain bikers. It has been trashed in the past so left lots of bad tastes in folks.
Midweek and mid September- plenty of sites even in the non primitive campsites. Beautiful view- very quiet; clean bathrooms.
will definitely revisit if we go by here again.
Did the trick for a night. There was one man with two rv’s there during our visit that gave us pretty bad vibes. Couldn’t go much further up the hill in our 2-wheel drive vehicle. All in all, it’s a gravel lot and road, good views, cool spot.
Haven't camped yet. Looking forward to camping in the fall. M,
Lovely folks run the place, they were able to help us find a repair shop so our trip wasn't interrupted. It's in a great location on the way to Great Basin or before heading off to the Black Rock Desert to the north. Amenities are simple and very clean, don't expect a casino resort experience.
They are very flexible and helpful, we have stayed here a couple of times now and look forward to our stops.
Jake from the Dyrt here! The Desert Shadows Ranch is an awesome place to relax and take in some beautiful sunrises over the valley. Check them out and share some pics on the Dyrt!
Tucked off, dirt road with enough seclusion and privacy to feel comfortable at night. Be forewarned that the road is super rough and you will definitely need a car with more clearance to get up it. There is a little pull out before you get to where the directions take you that is perfectly cool to camp. I wouldn’t go all the way up that little stretch of road past the water tanks unless you have a 4x4. The pullout also has a portajohn and sink if needed.
One thing to note! There are many joggers and bikers that go up this road pretty much as soon as the sun goes over the hill (about 6 in July) so just be aware of that when camping here. I wasn’t bothered by anyone and I had about 4 people pass by my car this morning.
Nice place to park for the night.
Very cool dispersed camping areas all along Pyramid Lake at all the different beaches, right on the water. We stopped at Popcorn Rock to check it out and possibly stay the night, but the fees are what convinced us to keep moving to a free spot. This area is tribal land and you need to pay a fee to use the lake- $32/night for camping and $20/day for day use.
There are toilets as well as recycling and trash bins (no glass recycling. Plastic and aluminum only). There are two little picnic benches and shade structures for the day use area. There’s surprisingly good cell reception in this area. Easy access for big rigs.
This place is everything we look for when boondocking. It's quiet, open, easy to get to with our class c, flat(ish), cell service, and places to hike/walk around. There was nobody else around when we stayed here for 2 nights in May.
The road is nearby but barely visible and you can hardly hear the cars. The rocks (tufas) are really neat and fun to climb.
There's absolutely no shade so the sun makes it feel hotter than it is. And the wind comes through somewhat unpredictably so we couldn't keep our awning out.
It's surprisingly clean, I mean there's some trash which is to be expected, but not huge amounts of it.
There are a couple of little narrow roads you can take to find a more secluded spot, but I wouldn't attempt it unless your vehicle can handle it. There are a couple of random big dips to get past, and really there aren't very many camping opportunities past the big giant open area by the rocks. The big main area is huge and would easily fit several campers.
Great place to boondock!
