Dune riding draws the crowds to Sand Mountain, a BLM recreation area outside Fallon, Nevada, where a massive sand dune rises from the high desert floor and attracts OHV enthusiasts in large numbers. This is not a quiet overnight stop. Engines run through the night as dune buggies, ATVs, and dirt bikes work the slopes around the clock, which means light sleepers should plan accordingly. The dune itself has a documented history reaching back roughly 9,000 years to a dried lake bed, and the surrounding area includes a historic Pony Express station site.
Campsites are dispersed across the area but stay close to compacted ground near the main road. Driving too far into loose sand risks getting stuck. The sand surface is flat enough for tent setup, and fire rings, pit toilets, and a dump station are on site. No hookups are available, and RVs up to 50 feet can access the site. One reviewer noted trash accumulation around posts, and conditions get soggy after rain, so timing matters.
Fees apply most days, though entry is free on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. As Leah W. puts it, "this is not a quiet and peaceful desert camping trip." Hikers venturing onto the dunes after dark need to carry a visible light since OHV traffic continues well into the night. Campers who prefer a quieter BLM experience in the region can find campgrounds near BLM Land — Stillwater Field Office, including dispersed sites at BLM Dispersed off US-50 — Alkali Flats a short distance to the south.
