Sand Mountain

Sand Mountain is primarily an off-highway vehicle (OHV) paradise. Visitors can enjoy riding dune buggies, ATVs, dirt bikes, and four-wheelers on the massive sand dunes. Beyond motorized recreation, the area offers opportunities for hiking on the dunes (best done in the evening when it's cooler), nature observation—including rare blue butterflies that are unique to this location—and exploring the 9,000-year-old dried lake bed. Photography is popular, especially during sunset when the dunes create dramatic shadows. Stargazing can also be excellent, though be aware that fireworks are sometimes set off after dark.

Camping at Sand Mountain Recreation Area operates on a fee system with some exceptions. The area is free to camp on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For other days, visitors must purchase either a weekly fee permit or an annual pass. These fees help maintain the facilities, which include garbage pickup and basic amenities. For the most current fee information, check with the Bureau of Land Management office that manages the recreation area before your visit.

Sand Mountain Recreation Area is located near Fallon, Nevada. To reach the recreation area, visitors typically access it via a main entrance gate. The area is situated on what was once an ancient lake bed, approximately 9,000 years old. Sand Mountain Recreation Area offers primitive camping facilities that cater primarily to OHV enthusiasts. The area has fire rings for campfires and pit toilets for basic sanitation needs. There are no designated campsites, allowing visitors to set up camp anywhere in the designated areas. The facilities are minimal but functional, with garbage pickup services available to help maintain the area. There are no water or electrical hookups, so campers should come prepared with all necessary supplies.
