Best RV Parks & Resorts near Sula, MT

Several RV parks dot the Bitterroot Valley near Sula, Montana, offering varied options for motorhome travelers. Sula Country Store and Resort provides full hookup RV sites with creek access, where RVs can park on level gravel pads with picnic tables and fire rings. Travellers Rest Cabins & RV Park in Darby (about 15 miles north of Sula) features 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections for larger rigs. Martin Creek Campground, located directly in Sula, accommodates big rigs but operates seasonally from Memorial Day to Labor Day without hookups, though drinking water and vault toilets are available. Black Rabbit RV in Hamilton offers pull-through sites with full hookups approximately 30 miles north. "The sites are large and easily fit our 28' trailer and truck. Definitely could fit any size class A rig," noted one RV camper about River's Fork Lodge & RV Park, which sits just across the Idaho border.

Summer brings peak demand to RV campgrounds throughout the region, making advance reservations essential for full hookup sites. Cell service varies dramatically between parks - River's Fork Lodge has no Verizon coverage but offers WiFi, while parks closer to Hamilton maintain better connectivity. Most RV parks in the area welcome pets, though specific restrictions may apply. Dump stations are available at Travellers Rest, Black Rabbit RV, and Wagonhammer RV Park & Campground (located in North Fork, Idaho). Mountain driving conditions require caution when towing larger RVs, particularly on routes crossing between Montana and Idaho. Winter camping options are limited, with many parks closing between November and May due to snow conditions. Philipsburg RV, located about 60 miles northeast of Sula, maintains just four sites with 30/50-amp service and remains one of the few year-round options for RV camping in the broader region.

    Black Rabbit RV

    Compact but Quiet Spot

Very full park with mostly long- term guests on gravel pads, no grass. Spots very close together but each site had a picnic table- no grills. Visitors friendly but staff were marginal. Small laundry room with old machines. Convenient location but check- in early during peak season.

    South Van Houten Campground

    Lovely lakeside camping for free!

Nice small camping area with about 5 sites, complete with picnic tables and fire rings with grills. It was a fairly long drive down a somewhat road but wide gravel road, but I did see a truck with a big fifth wheel on it, so you can definitely do it!

Fishing in lake, just no motorized boats. Pit toilets. Pretty area!

The Inn at Philipsburg RV Park

    In town, as advertised

Had a van battery issue so needed to plug in for the cold night. Is as advertised, not for typical bookdockers. Owner is nice and accommodating. Maybe 12 sites with some long term renters - it appeared. All hook ups available up to 50amp. Not quite close enough to down town to walk (in winter). Philipsburg is an awesome small Montana town that’s worth a stop.

    Sula Country Store and Resort

    Nicest, cleanest, friendliest

I was camping at a nearby national park site that had a flyer for Camp Sula, saying that if you show the receipt from your stay you can use Camp Sulas shower, laundry facilities and wifi at no cost. I arrived there and the ladies working in the combination store/restaurant/gas and coffee station were so friendly and down to earth. I was given a towel and shampoo/conditioner for the shower, they had complimentary and coin washing machines, and coin dryers, all very efficient. After my shower and waiting for clothes to dry, I walked around the camp, the log cabins are adorable and cozy, each has its own porch, picnic table and adjacent fire pit. There is free put-put golf, horseshoes, tetherball and a small well stocked fishing pond with benches to watch the action or simply admire the beauty of the surroundings. It is close to the main highway but tucked back enough you feel "away" from the bustle. I enjoyed myself so much I inquired about camping there for the night & I would only need a parking space because I sleep in my truck bed canopy. They were full (accommodates RVs and tents) but offered a makeshift spot right by the creek. It was perfect. Because of COVID, they had limited reservations for dinner, and practiced social distancing and requested patrons wear masks. Not everyone participated with their request but were equally treated with kindness and respect. I highly recommend their breakfast, big fluffy pancakes and local meats. They kept the restaurant, showers & bathroom & store very very clean. The location is a landmark, the Lewis and Clark expedition camped there on their way to discover the west. I highly recommend them

    Sam Billings Memorial Campground

    The best in SW Montana

12 sites with good tables and fire rings. This is a well maintained NFS campground. 3 vault toilets that are kept clean. Sites #1 & #2 get the most sun, are the largest, and can accommodate any size RV. The remaining sites vary in size. #2 can easily hold 5 full size trucks side by side, or three medium size trailers/5th wheels with their tow vehicles. It also has 3 large tables, plenty of open ground for tents, and is ideal for large groups and families. Toilets are located across from site 3, between 5/6, across from 12. #7 is low ground camping you walk down to with minimal shade and perfect for hot weather days.

The exit is at site 12, one way travel thru the campground. Across the street from the exit is the entry to sites 1-4 horse camping. Small sites with table, fire ring, and enough room for a small tent. There are 3 large metal structures with 3 chains each for horses and 2 horizontal tie out bars. No room to park horse trailers on that pull thru. One trailer spot across from site 4 by the “stock water trail” sign, the rest can park 50 yards down the road at the trail head/turn around. There are 2 additional tie out areas here for horses and plenty of room for horse trailers and several other vehicles.

Be sure to read the notice above the envelope box before you pay. From weather dependent dates chosen by the Rangers there is no cost from late Oct to late May. Otherwise it is $10 per night, $5 with golden or access passes.

No cell service, only 1 mile to the paved road, Ranger station is only about 1/2 mile down that paved road. The Rangers are proactive in sharing any important information such as severe weather, bear activity, or any other notable activity.

Details: Ranger station on the main road less than a mike from the entrance. They show up once a week Ravialli county sheriff is who to call on weekends and holidays, they will respond Be bear aware in season Equestrian specific campsites Trailhead next to the CG So much firewood laying around There are some karens that have been “coming here my whole life” and think they own the place; avoid Only three site requires walking access, the rest are drive right in to. Only a few sites so if its great weather or holiday show up mid week or even a week ahead if you can Free stays out of season, otherwise it’s a daily fee, pay at the entrance sign

River's Fork Lodge & RV Park

    Hidden Gem

What an unbelievable place. Found this place on a total random pick. I was actually a little concerned about the cell/WiFi ability with being so potential remote. When we booked our RV spot with Porter he mentioned that Verizon cell service wasn’t very good but they did offer free WiFi which was extremely important as my wife needed it for work. When we arrived we found zero cell service but the WiFi was a savor. Now depending of what your here for no cell and WiFi could be just fine, I surely enjoyed the seclusion and being disconnected from the world.

We stayed in site #2 pretty close to the lodge which I think helped with the WiFi signal. The sites are large and easily fit our 28’ trailer and truck. Definitely could fit any size class A rig. There are full hookups at each site 20, 30, and 50amp at each site as well I believe. Not sure if you can get any closer to the river. The back of the trailer was probably less than 10 ft. to the river. Outstanding view.

The fishing was spot on, right on the river you don’t have to even drive anywhere if you don’t want. They also offer kayak rentals. Unfortunately I didn’t realize how warm, calm, and popular the river was. Next time we come back we will definitely float the river.

If there was really anything they could add, would possibly be something for kids to do. Just as a family of four with a 3 and 6 year old, they can only fish so much.

But over all 5 star, unfortunately this place won’t stay a hidden gem for much longer, can’t wait to come back. A huge thanks to Porter again!

    Black Rabbit RV

    Nice Campground on the river

Nice little park in Hamilton. If you were wondering why its called "Black Rabbit" RV park, take a look at some of the photos below. Contactless check-in if you don't arrive during business hours. The park is on the river. It was a short walk from our RV to a cool spot with chairs and a fire pit on the river. The park is quiet and the RV spots are generally pretty wide, all pull throughs.

The park is in town, so very convenient if you want to get groceries. The staff was friendly and helpful!

    Lodgepole Campground

Quiet Campground, Watch the Roads in Places

This was a bit tight pulling our 35 ft fifth wheel, but just be careful with a couple of the turns. The campground roads need some work in spots - there were several potholes as deep as 6-8 inches - enough to jar your teeth out If you're not watching for them.

Sites are very nicely spaced with lots of sunlight and dappled shade. Everyone was pretty quiet and well mannered. I was a bit surprised by how empty this campground was during the week, despite it being summer. Mon-Fri I would say it wasn't more than 30-50% full. It did fill up on the weekends.

Stayed here two weeks in July. You're at 6000ish feet, so the weather is delightful in the summer. Some nice hiking is within walking distance, and Echo Lake is a decent workout from the campground.

There are several pressurized water spigots spaced around the campground, but oddly, they don't have a standard garden hose fitting. I have a 55 gallon bladder I fill and then I use a pump to fill my rig from the bladder. This saves me from having to move the rig to get water. The camp hosts site did have a standard hose fitting and he had no problem letting me fill the bladder several times during my stay.

There is a day use area (Red Bridge) across the street on Georgetown Lake, but there's not much there. Only a couple picnic tables and a boat ramp. No shade. No place to let the dogs swim and play fetch. I recommend going east back up Montana Route 1 a mile or so to the Grassy Point boat launch. Large parking lot with plenty of doggie access to the water for playing and fetching.

All in all, a nice place to spend a couple weeks.

    North Van Houten Campground

    Nice fishing lake

Nice little campsite near a small, quiet fishing lake. About 5 sites here with a pit toilet. No cell service. 10 mile rocky road in, but saw a fifth wheel, so its not impassable by any means! There’s also South Van Houten on the other side, but I can’t imagine this serene little patch of heaven gets too full. Saw folks swimming, fishing, and boating in the lake.

Guide to Sula

RV camping areas near Sula, Montana cluster along the East Fork Bitterroot River, which flows at elevations between 4,400-4,600 feet. This mountainous region experiences warm summer days in the 80s but cool nights that often drop below 50°F even in July. The Bitterroot National Forest surrounds the small community, with multiple campgrounds accessible from Highway 93.

What to do

Fishing access points: The East Fork Bitterroot River offers multiple access points near Martin Creek Campground. "There is a nice river bubbling past. Conifers inhabit the hillside... A man road his bike (complete with front wicker basket) to the river to fish," notes one camper.

Hiking trails: Several trailheads exist within short driving distance of Sula campsites. Near Sam Billings Memorial Campground, "a 1.3 mile up hill hike will have you breathing hard but it's worth it!" A visitor also mentions, "There are some nice trails nearby" with others noting the area features "a forest recovering from a burn. It's interesting to see how it is growing back."

Kayaking routes: The Salmon River in nearby Idaho provides excellent kayaking opportunities. One visitor at River's Fork Lodge noted, "Next time we come back we will definitely float the river" after discovering "how warm, calm, and popular the river was."

What campers like

Riverside sites: Many campgrounds feature sites directly beside water. At Andreas on the River RV Park, campers appreciate having "our own deck looking over the river watching osprey fish." Another reviewer noted their trailer "was probably less than 10 ft. to the river. Outstanding view."

Pet-friendly facilities: Most RV parks welcome pets, with some offering special amenities. Wagonhammer Campground features "a dog island that your fur kid can run around off leash," according to a visitor who appreciated this amenity during their "quick couple day trip to the hot springs."

Clean facilities: Campers frequently mention cleanliness as a standout feature. At Wagonhammer RV Park & Campground, visitors noted "showers and restrooms spotless and free, great little laundry room," while another described it as "Beautiful and clean" with "Level parking."

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly throughout the region. At Wagonhammer, "If you want complete solitude from the internet and TV this is the place for you to reconnect with nature... No cell service (AT&T & Sprint)" and "Poor WiFi." Another camper advised, "If you are a digital nomad and stay here then go to Salmon (30-minute drive), turn left, and a few blocks down on your left is the public library."

Limited groceries and supplies: Stock up before arriving at more remote campgrounds. "Nearest town with groceries etc. is in Salmon so stock up before you go," recommends one camper at Wagonhammer.

Mountain driving conditions: Many roads to campgrounds involve steep grades and tight turns. Campgrounds in Sula sit at higher elevations, making for potentially challenging access in larger vehicles or during shoulder seasons.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Some campgrounds offer more for children than others. At River's Fork Lodge & RV Park, one camper noted, "If there was really anything they could add, would possibly be something for kids to do. Just as a family of four with a 3 and 6 year old, they can only fish so much."

Insect protection: Bring mosquito protection, especially for shaded areas. One camper at Wagonhammer noted their stay would have been "five star if it were not for the swarming mosquitoes anywhere in the shade."

Off-season camping: For fewer crowds, consider camping during shoulder seasons. Sam Billings Memorial Campground has reduced rates during certain times: "From weather dependent dates chosen by the Rangers there is no cost from late Oct to late May. Otherwise it is $10 per night, $5 with golden or access passes."

Tips from RVers

Site sizing: Many RV sites near Sula, Montana can accommodate larger rigs. At Black Rabbit RV, "the RV spots are generally pretty wide, all pull throughs," though another camper described it as "Very full park with mostly long-term guests on gravel pads, no grass. Spots very close together."

Reservation timing: During peak summer months, secure spots well in advance. "Show up mid week or even a week ahead if you can" for Sam Billings Memorial Campground, according to one visitor, as the limited sites fill quickly during holidays and weekends.

Hookup availability: RV sites with full hookups are concentrated in established parks rather than forest service campgrounds. Martin Creek Campground near Sula operates seasonally from "Memorial Day to Labor Day" without hookups, though it offers drinking water and toilets.
