The Bitterroot Valley around Sula sits at approximately 4,500 feet elevation in southwestern Montana, where the East Fork of the Bitterroot River meets the West Fork. Summer temperatures typically range from 45-85°F with cool nights even during peak season. Winter camping options remain limited with most Forest Service campgrounds closed from October through May due to snowfall that can exceed 60 inches annually.
What to do
Fishing access points: Martin Creek Campground offers multiple spots to cast along the river. "This is a nice little camping spot. Not full on Memorial Day weekend. I can only assume it will be busy for the Four of July. There are some nice trails nearby," notes Scott C. about Martin Creek.
Hiking trails: Warm Springs Campground connects to several trail networks. "Been coming here for over 50 years. Good for tents, and RVs UNDER 30ft. Some areas overgrown where you used to be able to put tents. Pit toilets well maintained," shares David M. about Warm Springs Campground.
Lake activities: Three Frogs Campground provides lake access for non-motorized boats. "Check out the paved trail for foot and bicycle traffic that goes along the lake," suggests Sadie P. about the recreational options at the campground.
What campers like
Private, spacious sites: Mussigbrod Campground offers isolation between campsites. "All the campsites are pretty isolated from each other by the pine trees so you can't really see your neighbors. The lake is beautiful and not too cold. You can definitely bring a non-motorized boat to go around the lake in," explains Mackenzie F. about Mussigbrod.
Clean facilities: Twin Creek Campground maintains their vault toilets regularly. "It is super quiet back here, with the added bonus of the creek tinkling away below the campground. It's run by a concessionaire and is super clean even without a host on site," reports Annie C. about Twin Creek Campground.
Water access: Three Frogs Campground connects to Lake Como. "This is a nice campground with a beautiful lake. No hookups. Potable water. No dump. Vault toilets. Sites are spaced out. Lake access is not the greatest for carrying kayaks. Good lake access from day use just before entering campground," explains Eric G.
What you should know
Seasonal closures: Most campgrounds operate from late May through September only. "From weather dependent dates chosen by the Rangers there is no cost from late Oct to late May. Otherwise it is $10 per night, $5 with golden or access passes," explains Sadie P. about Sam Billings Memorial Campground.
Wildlife awareness: Bears frequent the area, particularly during berry season. "Saw lots of animals even a video of a Grizzly not but 3 miles from the camp grounds. Another camper had the video of the Grizzly from the night before!" warns Scott C.
Site variations: Choose sites carefully based on your needs. "The campground has an upper and lower level. I did see a 30+ foot trailer but I wouldn't do it. The drive out is a bit too tight for my comfort," cautions Sadie P. about Three Frogs Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly amenities: Sula Country Store and Resort offers activities specifically for children. "There is free put-put golf, horseshoes, tetherball and a small well stocked fishing pond with benches to watch the action or simply admire the beauty of the surroundings," explains Trina B.
Accessible hiking: Lake Como provides paved trails suitable for all ages. "The loop trail around the lake is around 9 miles, and worth every step. The constant view of mountains and the clear lake are phenomenal," shares Lindsay B.
Educational opportunities: Sam Billings Memorial Campground offers geology exploration. "Stayed with a friend here to do some surficial geology in the Bitterroots Mt. It was a really nice central area to work out from and it had all we needed from a long day in the field," reports Nick P.
Tips from RVers
Size restrictions: Many pet-friendly camping areas near Sula have limitations on RV length. "Sites #1 & #2 get the most sun, are the largest, and can accommodate any size RV. The remaining sites vary in size. #2 can easily hold 5 full size trucks side by side, or three medium size trailers/5th wheels with their tow vehicles," advises Sadie P. about Sam Billings Memorial.
Budget-friendly options: Travellers Rest Cabins & RV Park offers affordable amenities. "$12 gets you campsite showers and toilets, WiFi and coin laundry. Also really great access to the bitterroot valley if you're into hikin and river activities," shares Abbas K. about Travellers Rest Cabins & RV Park.
Hookup availability: Limited full-service sites exist in the area. "Electric and water hook up nice. Nice walk to dam overlooking lake. Quiet and pleasant stay," notes Carol J. about Lake Como Campground's amenities for RVers.
