Rexford Bench Campground attracts dog owners with generously spaced sites and clean facilities near Lake Koocanusa. The pet-friendly campground features back-in sites on well-maintained grounds and provides access to swimming areas where dogs can enjoy shoreline walks. Sites include picnic tables and fire rings, with vault toilets available. Campers note the pristine condition of restrooms and the family-friendly atmosphere throughout the campground. Tobacco River Campground offers more rustic pet-friendly camping with direct river access, though the approach road can be rutted and challenging, especially for vehicles without four-wheel drive.

Heritage Cabin Property provides an alternative pet-friendly option with an off-leash yard specifically designed for dogs to run freely. The facility combines cabin accommodations with tent and RV camping sites equipped with 30 and 50-amp electrical hookups. Large grassy areas sweep down to a seasonal creek, giving pets additional space to explore. Kootenai National Forest's Camp 32 and North Dickey Lake campgrounds offer more primitive pet-friendly options with secluded sites in wooded settings. The heavily forested surroundings provide natural shade for pets during summer months, while wildlife warnings necessitate proper food storage to discourage bear investigations. Seasonal availability typically runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with some campgrounds offering free camping after September 25 when services like water are no longer available.

The RV Resort at Indian Springs Montana

Best kept secret in Northern Montana

I have stayed at this new RV Resort twice and love it.  The spaces are large, the bathrooms and laundry room are clean, they have a super large dog park and the views are unmatched.  It is also next door to a beautiful golf course. They also feature a playground, volleyball, community fire pit and trails close by.  If you are traveling to northwestern Montana you won't be disappointed.

The RV Resort at Indian Springs Montana

Nice new campground with great views and friendly staff.

The RV Resort at Indian Springs Ranch in Eureka MT is a nice new campground with full hook-ups (power, water, sewer). When I was there last year there were only 30 sites completed with 65 more nearing completion. Everything was new and nice and clean.

There are great views of the near by mountains and the park is adjacent to a wonderful 18 hole championship golf course. There is a small gift shop, miles of walking trails and an off leash dog park. The staff was very friendly.

      Dunn Creek Flats Campground

Peaceful Riverside Camping (if you don't count been awoken by Bald Eagles)

We stayed here off season, we pulled our trailer through a pull through site on the edge of the river. You could walk down to the river and fish in the river, but it wasn't really a place for people or pets to play. The sites are primitive with fire rings but no power or water hookups.

The campground is pretty small, has big trash bins to avoid bears, but it didn't look like it was a problem when we were there.

There are roads on both sides of the river, one being the highway, but the river helps drown out some of the road noise. The mountains are tall on either side of the river valley and so the sun goes down a little sooner than expected, but the views from camp are nice. There is a big open area in the center of the playground for people and pets to run around.

We would definitely stay here again.

      Peck Gulch Campground

      OMG! The views are AMAZING!

The views were amazing, even with the heavy smoke from the summer wildfires in the surrounding states. There are no services at the sites. There is water available. There is a vault toilet. There is a boat launch. Other than that, you are experiencing what Montana is best known for. Wide open spaces. Dark Skies. Peacefulness. There is a really nice marina close by that offers occasional outdoor concerts, a really nice restaurant and really nice people. The Canadian border is not that far. Eureka is north and has good restaurants and grocery. Yes. It does have a challenging grade entrance road, but a 30 ft Class A had no problem. See photos.

      Island Lake

      Good but not our fave

We camped here and enjoyed being away from everywhere else. There were free range cattle everywhere ... which means a lot of cow pies that the dogs couldn't stay out of. That wasn't really terrible though. The lake itself was rather gross. Probably the dirtiest lake I've ever been to in Montana. It was disappointing because we were camping on a very hot weekend. We wanted to get in the water to cool off, but it was gross so we couldn't bring ourselves to get in.

      Whitefish Bike Retreat

      The Place to Be Seen

Nearby Whitefish, MT has a growing reputation for fantastic trails, hikes and mountain bike areas, and this full-service oasis takes advantage of all of it.  The $50 per night fee (for the tent sites) comes with a sauna, bike repair and washing station, gift shop, hot showers, laundry, wi-fi, a bike skills area, trails for all levels…all intertwined with the Beaver Lake series of trails and small lakes.  Very kid and pet friendly, a community-building locale.  There's a large lodge for people wanting a roof over their heads.  As another example, if you bike in, they would usually try to make space for you (even if everything was full) and charge $15.  Plus, there are bike trails/easy routes to every other major biking area around Whitefish - Spencer Mountain, Lyon Mountain, Reservoir Lake and Big Mountain Nordic.  I could be nit-picky and say that the camping sites are a little on the small side and crammed together, but there's personality to each one and to the area in general.  Word of caution - reserve in advance!  😯  There was only one campground left on a Sunday evening in June.  The friendly attendant said they can make some exceptions for large groups.

      Tally Lake Campground

      Great campsites, great host.

We are normally tent campers. Bought an RV and tried it here first. Great little spot to spend a few days away from town. Pros: Awesome host, nice campsites, clean bathrooms, hiking trails nearby, firewood delivered to your site, fishing, boating, swimming is just a small walk away. The deepest or second deepest lake in Montana.

Cons: Some of the road is washboarded, but not to bad if you drive slow. No electric (not needed anyway, you are camping ;) )

All in all... a great place to go enjoy some nature.

      Caribou Campground

      Primitive!

This campground is as primitive as you can yet, yet beautiful. Although situated right off the road, this spot tucks in next to the creek and provides great access to northern Yaak area and lots of wildlife and hiking. The location does not include water (other than the creek) but does have pit toilets.

      Sylvia Lake Campground

      Haunting Beauty

Sylvia Lake is tucked back into the Flathead Forest. Wild fires have burned through this area leaving a path of dead tree stand as a reminder of mother nature’s fury. It’s oddly beautiful as the new growth is finding its resilient way back.

The road to the lake is long, winding, often rutted and dusty, BUT the lake beckons to be explored. There is designated camping as well as a few dispersed spots that have been created over time. You will find no amenities and you are quite a distance from any sort of cell service or stores, so come prepared.

The sketchy rope swing was left untried but the crawdads were plentiful! If you want to disconnect and want something other than the typical Montana camp, Sylvia is just right.

    Guide to Rexford

Rexford, Montana sits at an elevation of about 2,500 feet along Lake Koocanusa, a 90-mile reservoir created by Libby Dam on the Kootenai River. The area experiences warm summer days with cool evenings, making late spring through early fall the primary camping season. Most campgrounds in the Kootenai National Forest remain open from Memorial Day weekend until after Labor Day with several offering extended seasonal access.

    What to do

Boating and water access: Lake Koocanusa offers numerous boat launch options. At Rexford Bench Campground, campers can find "a large launch area" with "plenty of boat parking" according to Nancy C., who noted it's "amazingly beautiful" but sometimes "too windy" for kayaking or paddleboarding.

Fishing opportunities: The Tobacco River drainage provides excellent fishing spots. At Tobacco River Campground, visitors find "easy kayak launching at the mouth and lots of shoreline access," according to Emmett S., who also mentions "Kokanee in the river" during fall months.

Off-road trails: The forest roads around Lake Koocanusa provide extensive terrain for dirt bikes and ATVs. Talia H. found Rexford Bench Campground "awesome in April when the snow's melted and no one else is around! Easy to park a camper/toyhauler and get out and ride. You can go to the canadian border!"

    What campers like

Spacious, well-maintained sites: Campers consistently note the generous spacing between sites at many campgrounds. Mary C. observed that at Rexford Bench, the "sites are nicely spaced out and was quiet at night" with "long, wide, level back in sites."

Clean facilities: Visitors frequently mention the cleanliness of campground amenities. Shayly's review of Rexford Bench highlights that "this campground is very well kept. Clean bathrooms. Well spread out camp spots. Loved every part of our stay here."

Access to town conveniences: While enjoying nature, campers appreciate proximity to supplies. Blue Mountain RV Park places visitors near local amenities, with Nancy C. noting "the cute little town of Eureka is about 5 miles south. There you will find good restaurants, liquor store, nice well stocked grocery, retail shops and more."

    What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds have limited operational periods. Jeffrey G. reported that at Rexford Bench, "We came here just after the Labor Day weekend and found it to be not very busy as we arrived early on Friday... We were not able to camp near the water at this time due to much of the campground being closed off for the season."

Road conditions: Access to some dog friendly campgrounds near Rexford can be challenging. At Tobacco River Campground, Davy W. warns "the roads are so heavily rotted that it makes it very difficult for any vehicle to navigate the entrance" and advises "I personally would never access this park without four-wheel-drive."

Wildlife awareness: Bears frequent the area, particularly during fishing seasons. Sadie P. notes "high grizzly population in the fall" near Tobacco River Campground, while proper food storage is essential at all forest service sites to prevent wildlife encounters.
