    South Van Houten Campground

    Lovely lakeside camping for free!

Nice small camping area with about 5 sites, complete with picnic tables and fire rings with grills. It was a fairly long drive down a somewhat road but wide gravel road, but I did see a truck with a big fifth wheel on it, so you can definitely do it!

Fishing in lake, just no motorized boats. Pit toilets. Pretty area!

Sportsman Lodge, Cabins & RV Park

    Great spot, very friendly

This is a great spot in a tiny town south of Butte Montana. They have a couple cabins, several motel rooms and about 10 full hookup, all grass, RV spots. Also a large area for car/tent camping. The grounds are meticulously maintained by the owner and it has nice views of the bluffs and mountains all around it. Walking distance to the restaurant and bar in town if that’s your thing. Quality hookups at each site, and each site has its own trash can. Clean bathrooms and laundry on site. Owners are very present and attentive on site and super friendly. Picnic tables at every site. One shared fire pit out front of the office. It’s in a very small town, with several fishing spots nearby. Very peaceful location. We would stay again.

A few things to be aware of:

    • All sites are back in, but they are reasonably wide and very long.
    • It is about a mile or two from the interstate which is convenient but you can occasionally hear a large truck pass by.
    • There is a train track nearby, we heard about one train per day in the morning.
    • We were here in July and there were some mosquitos. If you plan to be outside probably bring a citronella candle or bug spray.

    Divide Bridge Campground

    Great Forest Service Campground

Clean vault toilets. Friendly Hosts on sight. Grounds well maintained. WATER AVAILABLE. Came in dry and filled up with water. Lower campground has several sites on water. Upper is more rustic with larger lots. (We have a 40 foot fifth wheel) Lovely hike to the top of the mountain over looks the park and the Big Hole River. Boat ramp in the campground and also one at the main entrance (fun for dogs ) Only 10.00/night. 4 stars because the mosquitoes were INSANE! Apparently only in July and August.

    Beaverhead River RV Park

Older RV Park used to be a KOA

We stayed here twice this year, once going North and then headed South for home.  First time they put us in a full hook-up that was to small so I asked for a bigger spot and because about 1/3rd of the spots were empty, they moved me.  Owner was very friendly and willing to find us a better spot.  Second time was on Sunday and the note on door put us in an even smaller full hook-up, despite me asking for a bigger site so I wouldn't have to unhook.  This is one reason for only three stars.  Office was closed and no one answered the phone or returned our call.  The site was totally unacceptable.  Even if I un-hooked there was not enough room to park the pick-up truck.  Left several messages, no response.  We moved to an empty water/electric only site and set up.  An hour later another camper came in and said we were in their spot.  We moved again to another spot hoping no one would claim it.  Still no response from owner.  I guess camp is unsupervised on Sunday.  Maybe owner was out of town.

Second reason for only three stars:  Camp is older and full hook-up sites are close to each other.  I did not see any 50 amp, only 30 amp.  The openings for dumping are a couple of inches below ground level and the kind you just point the hose down and put a few rocks over to hold it down.  Gravel sites that are mostly level.

The Good:  The water and electric only sites in the back (spots 28 to 36) of the park are long and spread out.  I recommend if you can go without having sewer connection, the ones in back (spots 28 to 36) are the best to stay in.  Don't get the ones in front.  Big trees and lots of grass (but watch out for the gofer holes).  Quiet and peaceful night.

Did not use their restrooms or showers or pool (may not have been open) so no comment.  There is a dump site.  Wifi was 17 mbs but slowed down in the evening.  We use AT&T and got two bars of 5G.

    Fairmont RV Resort

    Nice location

Nice location for an overnight rest spot. We had a tent site, close to the road, but traffic wasn’t bad after dark. Site was grassy. No fires allowed for obvious reasons. We were the only tent guests. Most people looked like they were long term RV’rs. IMMACULATE bathrooms and showers with hot water and pressure ! There’s a hot springs nearby, a water slide, golf course and resort hotel/casino. Easy access to I-15. Only drawback I could see was that there was dog poop everywhere. Bags were provided, but apparently people don’t use them :(

River's Fork Lodge & RV Park

    Hidden Gem

What an unbelievable place. Found this place on a total random pick. I was actually a little concerned about the cell/WiFi ability with being so potential remote. When we booked our RV spot with Porter he mentioned that Verizon cell service wasn’t very good but they did offer free WiFi which was extremely important as my wife needed it for work. When we arrived we found zero cell service but the WiFi was a savor. Now depending of what your here for no cell and WiFi could be just fine, I surely enjoyed the seclusion and being disconnected from the world.

We stayed in site #2 pretty close to the lodge which I think helped with the WiFi signal. The sites are large and easily fit our 28’ trailer and truck. Definitely could fit any size class A rig. There are full hookups at each site 20, 30, and 50amp at each site as well I believe. Not sure if you can get any closer to the river. The back of the trailer was probably less than 10 ft. to the river. Outstanding view.

The fishing was spot on, right on the river you don’t have to even drive anywhere if you don’t want. They also offer kayak rentals. Unfortunately I didn’t realize how warm, calm, and popular the river was. Next time we come back we will definitely float the river.

If there was really anything they could add, would possibly be something for kids to do. Just as a family of four with a 3 and 6 year old, they can only fish so much.

But over all 5 star, unfortunately this place won’t stay a hidden gem for much longer, can’t wait to come back. A huge thanks to Porter again!

    North Van Houten Campground

    Nice fishing lake

Nice little campsite near a small, quiet fishing lake. About 5 sites here with a pit toilet. No cell service. 10 mile rocky road in, but saw a fifth wheel, so its not impassable by any means! There’s also South Van Houten on the other side, but I can’t imagine this serene little patch of heaven gets too full. Saw folks swimming, fishing, and boating in the lake.

    Southside RV Park

Reasonable price and a great place to stop over for the night

I'm giving this four stars as a quick stopover point- nothing against the resort but Dillon isn't a place we could find much to stay longer term for.  We had a really clean, level gravel site- that was a pull through, for $45 a night.  Fair price and as others have said, the park is clean and very convenient.  Our site was an end site and therefore felt pretty roomy.  During our stay the wifi was pretty horrible, so much so I'd say you should plan to bring your own internet connectivity.  Lastly, there is pretty decent shade on most sites.

The area sits at an elevation around 6,000 feet with cooler summer temperatures than lower-elevation locations. What to do

Fishing access points: The Big Hole River near Sportsman Lodge, Cabins & RV Park provides excellent fishing opportunities. "This area is popular for fly fishing and the Sportsman Lodge is a 7 minute walk from the fishing access on the river," notes one camper. Another adds, "There is a great fishing shop just round the corner and all services u need for your fishing trip."

Hot springs relaxation: Take advantage of the nearby hot springs for a relaxing break from camping. "Within walking distance of the hot springs resort," reports a visitor at Fairmont RV Resort. The resort features "indoor/outdoor pools, dining & bar" and "you are offered a day pass to the golf course and water park at no cost for the day."

River activities: Kayaking and rafting opportunities abound on the Salmon River. A camper at River's Fork Lodge & RV Park reported, "The fishing was spot on, right on the river you don't have to even drive anywhere if you don't want. They also offer kayak rentals."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campers consistently praise the cleanliness of RV parks in the region. "The campground, showers, laundry room were spotless clean," mentioned a visitor at Sportsman Lodge. At Southside RV Park, a camper noted, "Bathrooms and showers are very clean with a good amount of hooks to hang your towels and clothes on. In the mens room there's two showers one toilet one urinal and one sink."

Riverside locations: Many campers appreciate sites along rivers. "We enjoyed 2 nights here alongside the river with full hookups," shared a visitor at Andreas on the River RV Park. Another camper added, "Nice to have hookups and our own deck looking over the river watching osprey fish."

What you should know

Weather considerations: The area can experience significant wind and temperature fluctuations. A camper at Countryside RV Park noted, "No trees and in a wide open location. This location is beautiful but can be very windy. We were there on a very windy night."

Limited connectivity: Some parks have minimal cell service or WiFi. At Wagonhammer RV Park & Campground, a visitor advised, "No cell service for Verizon. Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Some parks feature play areas for children. Fairmont RV Resort offers a "fun playground, horseshoe area" according to reviews, making it suitable for families with active children.

Bug preparation: Mosquitoes can be an issue in shaded areas. One camper at Wagonhammer noted, "So close to a five star campground if it were not for the swarming mosquitoes anywhere in the shade." Pack insect repellent and citronella products.

Swimming options: Beaverhead River RV Park offers water recreation. "Nice pool," mentioned one camper, while another noted its riverside location provides additional water access for families.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Look for pull-through sites for easier access. "All sites are back in, but they are reasonably wide and very long," notes a camper about Sportsman Lodge. At Southside RV Park, a reviewer mentioned, "Most are pull through. All gravel except the grass but very level and really well surfaced."

Hookup variations: Different parks offer varied electrical services. "I did not see any 50 amp, only 30 amp," noted one RVer about Beaverhead River RV Park. At Right Turn Clyde RV Park, campers appreciate the "level spots with concrete areas" that provide stability for larger rigs.

Water availability: Seasonal water connections may not be available year-round. A camper at Countryside RV Park reported, "Water was available but not yet turned on so we could not hook up. Electric was fine."
