Several RV parks dot the central Montana landscape near Hobson, providing options for motorhome travelers. Ackley Lake State Park Campground in Hobson offers big-rig friendly sites open year-round, though without hookups for RVs. For full hookup options, Mountain Acres RV Park in Lewistown (about 30 miles east) provides electric, water, and sewer connections with 50-amp service from May through October. The Fergus County Fairgrounds in Lewistown also accommodates RVs with full hookups including 30-amp service. Chief Joseph City Park in Harlowton features pull-through RV sites with 50-amp electrical hookups, operating from April to October. "Sites are level, asphalt pads that are all pull-through and long enough for my truck and 32 foot 5th wheel," noted one RV camper about Chief Joseph City Park.

Seasonal availability varies significantly across these RV campgrounds. While Ackley Lake remains open year-round, most RV parks in the region operate from spring through fall, closing for winter. Dump stations are available at Mountain Acres RV Park, Fergus County Fairgrounds, and Kiwanis Park in Lewistown. Cell service is generally reliable in Lewistown but may be spotty at more remote locations like Ackley Lake. Pet-friendly policies exist at all mentioned RV sites, though specific restrictions may apply. Advance reservations are recommended, particularly for RV sites with hookups during peak summer months. The gravel roads leading to some campgrounds may require careful navigation for larger motorhomes. Kiwanis Park offers a free option for RVs with a 10-day stay limit, though without electrical hookups, making it suitable for self-contained units.

Great park to get some rest!!

Great small town RV park. $20.00 per night with electric. No sewer or dump station. Water on site but not to RV pads. Level, asphalt pads are all pull-through and long enough for my truck and 32 foot 5th wheel. 50/30 amp hook ups. Park is attached to a rodeo grounds so you might check availability on the weekends. We were only going to stay one night but the park is so nice that we stayed another two nights.

      Many Pines Campground

      Really get away

This campground is in the mountains. No phone service so you can really get away from everyday life. It is in the lewis and clark national forest so help isn't too far away. There should also be onsite caretakers. You will find running water and outhouses. The creek is nearby as well as great hiking spots. It is just below showdown ski resort. It is a favorite of ours.

      Thain Creek

      Thaine creek campgound

This is a nice back in the woods campground with spots right on the creek. Our spot was 4 nice table on the creek with lots of sound. A lot if shade. Semi secluded from other campsites. The fire pits are really high so standing up is required for heat. Need chainsaw to gather wood. Lots of birds in the area. Lewis and Clark national forest. Highwood mountains. Lots of potholes drive with care.

      Chief Joseph City Park

      Nice City Park and Campground

This is a large park for a small town.  The campground mostly caters to the RV set with 20 pull through sites with hook ups.  Their are two tent camping sites with tables and fire pits, but room for more if you don't want a table and fire ring.  Tent camping is just $12.  Two other possible campsite at the opposite side of the park.  Very nice new and large playground area plus picnic shelter.  Site has a dumpster just for campers and a small log cabin has firewood available.  Campground and park are right along the river so be sure to bring that fishing pole.  Water is available.

      Chief Joseph City Park

      A delightful refuge.

A very nice small town town campground east of Montana’s front range. Several level pull-through RV sites with electricity. Dumpster and water hydrant near by in the campground. Large new community playground adjacent to the RV sites. Sparsely used in October/November. 14 day limit. We look forward to staying here again.

      Aspen Campground

      Close to Memorial Falls

This campground was close to Memorial Falls which we wanted to hike the next day. The setting is wooded and right off scenic Highway 89. The fee for our site #6 was $5 plus $5 for extra vehicle. We were able to fit a small SUV and our pop up truck camper. There were only 6 sites here and we were the only ones here in midweek in late September 2020. There was a clean vault toilet, picnic table and barbecue stand. Simple basic campground near activities.

      Crystal Lake Campground

      Crystal Lake in September

Beautiful drive in. Road is gravel until you get to the National Forest then is paved but narrow. Take your time going up mountain and down. Camp sites are spaced out nice. Hiking trails. Lake looks pretty dry right now but it is beautiful up here. Potable water is available while we were here no electricity. 4 or 5 covered toilets throughout campground area.

      Whitetail Camp

Camp in the heart of the Little Belt Mountains

Whitetail Camp Campground located 12 miles north of U.S. Hwy 12 on Spring Creek road in the Little Belt Mountains. The campground is part established campground and part disperse camping area. The campground is located on both sides of Spring Creek road. On the left side of the road is two sites with picnic tables and metal fire rings. On the right side the campground is an open meadow with a few designated sites and a lot of room for disperse camping. Noticed one campsite with picnic table and metal fire ring on the right side. The campground has a vault toilet but no water or trash service. Vault toilet was well stocked. This is a very popular campground during the hunting season. Their is no fee to stay at Whitetail Camp Campground, but you are limited to 16 day. This is a bear area so you will need to keep all your food items in your vehicle, bear lockers are not available

      Chief Joseph City Park

      Wonderful City Park

It was 94 degrees when we pulled into town and electric for AC is absolutely required. For $20 we have a nice level, gravel site with 30/50 amp service. No hookups for water or sewer but that isn't necessary for an overnight stay. Each campsite has a picnic table. We even had a site with a tree that gave a little shade.

This is one of the nicest small town parks I have ever experienced. The play area for children is five star. Rodeo grounds, volleyball net, soccer field are just a short walk from the campsites. The bathrooms are clean and have flushing toilets. Showers are not available.

    Guide to Hobson

Camping options around Hobson, Montana range from basic tent sites to developed RV areas across elevations of 3,900 to 4,800 feet. The region experiences hot summers with temperatures often exceeding 90°F in July and August, while spring and fall bring more moderate conditions with occasional thunderstorms. Judith Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop to many campsites, with forested areas primarily consisting of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir.

    What to do

Fishing at Ackley Lake: Ackley Lake State Park allows fishing directly from numbered campsites along the shoreline. "Nice little lake that was pretty busy... The shoreline was rocky at our site, so it was easy to get in and out of the water," notes a camper from Ackley Lake State Park Campground.

Hiking nearby trails: Crystal Lake offers access to challenging trails including routes to ice caves. "The hike to the ice caves, while difficult, is SO worth it," reports a visitor at Crystal Lake Group Campsite, noting the rewarding views after the steep climb.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Morning and evening hours provide the best chances to spot wildlife. "Great staging location to visit the wilderness areas where Elk herds roam in the evening," comments a camper from Mountain Acres RV Park and Campground, highlighting the natural attractions beyond the campground itself.

    What campers like

Lake access for water activities: The direct lakefront positions at some campgrounds are highly valued. "All of the campsites are right on the water. I would stay there again for sure," shares a visitor at Ackley Lake State Park Campground.

Budget-friendly options: Several camping areas operate on donation systems or have minimal fees. "Free but please donate what you can so they will keep this open for the next time you pass thru," advises a camper about Kiwanis Park in Lewistown.

Small town proximity: Campers appreciate being near historic towns with essential services. "Town is very historic. A good staging location to visit the wilderness areas," mentions a visitor to Mountain Acres Mobile Home Park and Campground, noting the convenience of having supplies accessible.

    What you should know

Weather considerations: The region experiences rapid weather changes, particularly in mountain areas. "The campground has lean-to's with picnic table and fire ring... When the wind is blowing you take the brunt of it since there is not trees," warns a visitor to Ackley Lake about the exposure at some sites.

Seasonal availability variations: Most campgrounds in the area have limited operational seasons. "Great for an overnight stay. The gravel road coming from west Yellowstone is very scenic," notes a camper at Spring Creek Campground, which operates from Memorial Day through December 1.

Mosquito preparation: Summer months bring heavy mosquito activity around lakes and streams. "Beautiful area around the lake. Riddled with mosquitoes around this time of year. Be sure to bring plenty of your favorite mosquito repellent!" cautions a visitor to Spring Creek Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground accessibility: Some campgrounds feature newly built play areas for children. "The play area for children is five star. Rodeo grounds, volleyball net, soccer field are just a short walk from the campsites," reports a visitor to Chief Joseph City Park.

Swimming options: Rocky shorelines at some lakes provide natural entry points for swimming. "Good spot for camping, fishing, swimming, kayaking!" shares a camper from Ackley Lake State Park Campground about the multiple activities available.

Privacy considerations: Some campgrounds have closely spaced sites that may not suit families needing separation. "This is a small cramped campground with 6 sits, five of which are right next to each other so privacy will not be had if others are camping," notes a visitor to Judith Station Day Use Area/Bill & Ruth Korell Memorial Campground.

    Tips from RVers

Level site availability: Many RV parks in the area feature pull-through sites that accommodate larger rigs. "Level, asphalt pads that are all pull-through and long enough for my truck and 32 foot 5th wheel," notes a camper at Chief Joseph City Park about the ease of parking.

Limited hookup options: Not all RV parks provide full hookups, requiring self-sufficiency. "It's clean, maintained and relatively quiet. As others noted, it's essentially free, donations accepted," reports a visitor about Kiwanis Park, noting the lack of electrical connections.

Dump station locations: Plan waste disposal routes in advance as dump stations are limited. "There is a shower at the civic center in town for $2, or one in Grass Lands for $5 just 30 min down the road," mentions a Kiwanis Park visitor, providing useful information about nearby facilities.
