Best Equestrian Camping near Newburg, MO

Brazil Creek Camping Area offers primitive horse sites with tie-out areas for horses and trailer parking. The campground provides a secluded setting in Mark Twain National Forest with access to miles of equestrian trails. Vault toilets are available, but no water or electrical hookups exist at this free campground. Berryman Trail & Campgrounds, another horse-friendly option in the national forest, features eight campsites with hitching posts for horses. True primitive camping with no variation of facilities means riders should bring drinking water for themselves and their horses. The campground connects directly to the 24-mile Berryman Trail, popular with both hikers and horseback riders.

The Berryman Trail system offers extensive riding opportunities through the Ozark forests. Riders access multiple connected trails from these campgrounds, with the Brazil Creek area providing direct trail access to the Meramec River. A crystal clear stream runs behind Brazil Creek campground, offering a place for horses to cool off after trail rides. Equestrians should note that cell service is limited or non-existent in these remote areas, so having physical maps is essential for navigation. The Flying W Store & Campground provides another option with dedicated areas to park horses and convenient access to miles of trails for mountain biking, horse riding, and hiking. These campgrounds remain open year-round, allowing for four-season equestrian camping experiences.

    Scrivner Road Conservation Area

A hidden gem tucked away in rural Cole County

First off there is camping here!!!! This Missouri Conservation area is a Swiss Army knife of rugged of the path camping. Rivers, Lakes, Gun range, Horses and hiking can all be enjoyed here. First come first serve basic camp area on the river. It has 1 fire ring in a gravel turnaround. Don’t let this fool you. This area has an abundance of wildlife equestrian trails and hiking. Getting too hot paddle on the lake located on the left Forck after entering. The area has a handgun, and rifle range with vault toilets. The pictures speak for themselves. Love this spot and will be planning another trip soon.

    Hazel Creek Campground

    Secluded, quiet, and friendly locals

Enjoyed my stay and hikes on the equestrian trails. At the time no horses were around, only other tent campers, one of which gave me their extra camp wood.

Hazel creek is a picturesque crystal clear creek that is near the campground, featuring tons of wildlife and peaceful views.

The campsites are flat and clean gravel fill or dirt, the grass is usually tamed, each with a campfire ring with a grill and a picnic table and lantern pole. Densely wooded, full shade.

The access road was rough but my wife’s tiny compact car didn’t have any trouble, but I’m sure it’s a mess when wet.

Timbuktu Campground — Echo Bluff State Park

    Missouri's best state park!

This is really the gem of Missouri state parks. Rv sites are all full 30/50 amp with water and sewer. All spots have plenty of room but are back in. The pads are perfectly level and are concrete. Camp hosts are helpful and kind. The lodge is in walking distance and offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food is pretty good also! They offer inside dining but the best place to eat and enjoy the outdoors is on their huge deck. Wonderful place all around and Missouri really has done this one the right way!

    Brazil Creek

    Great free camping spot

Stayed here a few nights in May. This camp site is along the berryman trail so you can stay here if youre backpacking said trail. There is only one table and one metal fire ring but people have made various fire rings out of rocks and there is plenty of room for a lot of people. The camp is right by the creek which is ice cold and good for sticking sore feet in :). There are also a few fish in there. In recent years they put in a single vaulted bathroom but thats it! No showers or drinking water if you cant filter the stream water. They also have several hitching posts for horses here since you can ride horses on berryman trail. I have at&t and ive been getting 1 to 3 bars. But the other person im camping withuisnt grtting anything with their provider. Over all I think its a great little spot if youre ok with no electricity, light or just wanna get away from it all for a while.

    Brazil Creek

    Hide and Seek

To me Brazil Creek Campground is an ideal spot to base your adventuring out of. Primitive horse sites in your own little haven in the woods. Have an actual map handy and make any calls before you get here because your phone will do you no good.

One of the sites is the "Creme De'la Creme" with tie out areas for your horses, plenty of tent and horse trailer parking space and a short walk to a crystal clear steam just deep enough to dangle your tired legs in or sit your saddle sore body in the ice cold water.

True there is no variation of facilities (in other words bring your small shovel and tp, plus plenty of drinking water) but a small price to pay for the privacy and quiet this campground offers.

A trailhead is nearby for your riding enjoyment. This is what we call a remote or backwoods site in Ky and can be had through contacting the visitors center in the area for explanation of permit.

    Blue Spring Ranch

    Annual Retreat for the Family

We have stayed at Blue Springs for three consecutive years in a row. We have children in tow, and love all of the amenities. We park close to the creek, we drive to the Meramec River and sometimes enjoy petting a horse or goat. Last year we zip lined. It’s close to the caverns and other awesome sites. Clean shower houses and a pool cap off the nice experience

Timbuktu Campground — Echo Bluff State Park

Nature at it’s best. Unique and beautiful .

This is the newest state park in MO. The campground is located at the bottom of a steep grade hill in an open area. New trees have been planted throughout the campground with established mature trees surrounding the outer boundaries. Basic and premium sites are available for RV’s and trailers along with a separate area for tent camping only. Pull type wagons are provided for tent campers to haul their belongings to their campsites. Restrooms and showers are conveniently located within the campground. A Clearwater creek is a short walk from the campground where swimming and floating may be enjoyed. The “Current River” is also less than a mile away and canoe rentals offer free pickup at the campground. One of the most unique aspects of the campground is the periodic presence of wild horses who roam freely throughout the campground and park. There are several well established hiking and biking trails.

Berryman Trail & Campgrounds - Mark Twain National Forest

    Remote. Beautiful. Free!

Came here to experience the Ozarks. We were not disappointed. The campground was part of the Civilian Conservation Corp camp. It's remote and off the beaten path. A small campground with only 8 spots, some big enough for RVs. No hook ups or water. Pack it in and pack it out. Each site had enough space from each other. Some sites had a picnic table. There was a pond we found right behind our site. There was also a large picnic shelter at the campground. Clean pit toilets. The trailhead to the BerryMan Trail is there. This is a 24 mile trail we backpacked overnight to the Brazil Creek campground and back. Only ones on the trail. Just left our van overnight in the lot instead of the campground and felt completely safe. Lots of flowers on the trail. Someone put up a flag. Didn't find Bigfoot, (although we were warned by some locals at the campground :) There were some horses and riders around the campground. We would definitely come back to this place.

Guide to Newburg

Primitive camping options for equestrian enthusiasts exist throughout Missouri's Ozark forests near Newburg. The region features spring-fed creeks with water temperatures consistently cooler than typical streams. Many horse camps connect directly to extensive trail systems where riders can access multiple connecting routes through the dense forest terrain.

What to do

Creek swimming and fishing access: Paddy Creek Recreation Area offers primitive sites near water features. "Creek is spring fed so water is always cooler then most creeks," notes Aaron T. Kura O. adds, "Access to swimming, fishing, and hiking trails. We were surprised with how many sites were taken up, but there were still quite a few available. Arrive early for a good spot."

Experience Ozark river floating: Blue Spring Ranch offers direct water access with guided river experiences. "We did a 5 mile float which was amazing! They bus you up river and then you end up back at the campground," reports Caitlin F. Leslie G. mentions, "We drive to the Meramec River and sometimes enjoy petting a horse or goat. Last year we zip lined."

Trail riding close to water: Many equestrian trails run alongside waterways. At Flying W Store & Campground, riders find access points to trail systems. Elizabeth R. describes, "at the very back where it connects to the current river are some amazing bluffs to jump off of." Martin K. adds, "About every thing you want to do is near by, I recommend you give this place a try first before going anywhere else."

What campers like

Clean facilities with riverside access: Froggys River Resort maintains well-kept grounds. Chuck M. reports, "We called ahead and arrived 45 minutes after their closing time. The gentleman at the office cheerfully guided us to our campsite. It is blissfully quiet." Laura C. confirms, "Cute campground. The camp hosts were amazing. Perfect river access."

Campground layout and organization: Huzzah Valley Resort receives praise for its management. Kari F. notes, "They have a system that is like a well oiled machine. Can reserve sites online, can check in from your car once you arrive. Very clean facilities. Sites are large and well kept." Mallory C. adds, "It was awesome to be camped right on the creek and take a half way break at camp for lunch before finishing the float."

Solitude and isolation: The horse campgrounds near Newburg offer true disconnection. About Paddy Creek, Lyric O. states, "We've been camping here for 3-4 years now and we are still amazed at how quiet and secluded it is. We love being able to have an escape from the world and forced to not have our electrons since there is no service."

What you should know

Limited cell service: Most equestrian camping areas have minimal connectivity. At Berryman Trail & Campgrounds, Hannah F. explains, "Very few bars so don't expect to get any service and you won't be disappointed." Kura O. adds about Paddy Creek, "No cell service at cg. Had to drive up the hill to get a signal."

Water availability varies: Some campgrounds lack water sources. Josh C. notes about Paddy Creek, "$5 recommendation donation for the night. Stayed at this campground as a halfway point hiking the Big Piney Trail loop. Typical primitive campground with toilets, bear-proof trash cans, and camp sites with fire rings and picnic tables, but not much else. Didn't see any water faucets near our site."

Popularity fluctuations: Campgrounds become crowded during peak seasons. Joseph A. warns about Huzzah Valley, "If it's your birthday or a bachelor/Bachelorette party, this is your place. They have a family side and a party side (the zoo). Don't expect to get much rest in the zoo. There are plenty of campsites to enjoy. Reserve yours early they fill up fast in the summer."

Tips for camping with families

Pick family-designated areas: Some horse campgrounds separate quiet zones from party areas. About Ozark Outdoors-Riverfront Resort, Matt states, "Great access to river. Stayed on the family side and had a great time. Staff super helpful and upbeat, everyone looked like they wanted to ACTUALLY be there."

Seek river beaches for kids: Multiple campgrounds offer natural water features for children. Caitlin F. recommends, "Highly recommend going to the 'Upper Beach'! It's up by the cabins/cottages and you definitely need to drive there. Get there early in the morning to set up your chairs in the river to get a good spot."

Find equestrian areas with amenities: Timbuktu Campground offers more developed facilities for families with horses. Stephanie W. shares, "This campground has full amenities. Clean bathrooms and showers. Firewood available for purchase and even WiFi. The WiFi doesn't reach the primitive campsites but that was perfect for us to unplug! It was a great place to take our kids!"

Tips from RVers

Length restrictions for horse trailers: Many horse camping areas limit vehicle sizes. About Paddy Creek, Cheryl M. advises, "Parking pads are short and lined with huge boulders. Worked fine for our 16ft TT big rigs probably not so much." Gregory adds, "each site has a paved parking spot big enough for my truck and 25ft camper. I would say it could fit up to a 35ft trailer."

Scout pull-through options: When hauling horses, seek sites with easy access. Candace found at Huzzah Valley, "Stayed here for a float. Although we stayed on a rainy weekend, it was a nice spot, and we would definitely come back. Our site did get a little on the muddy side, so we may try a different spot when we return."

Check seasonal road conditions: Off-season visits require preparation. Patti M. suggests, "Pack it in and pack it out. Each site had enough space from each other. Some sites had a picnic table. There was a pond we found right behind our site. The trailhead to the BerryMan Trail is there."
