What to do
Hiking trails: Weston Bend State Park offers well-maintained hiking trails that provide recreation options beyond horse riding. "This campground was everything I could hope for. The camp site were small and compact but it was nice. I for sure recommend campsite 26 anyone who comes and utilizes," notes Spencer P., highlighting a specific site with good trail access.
Lake activities: Camp Branch Campground provides access to Smithville Lake for water recreation beyond horseback riding. "Nice big spots with electric only. It is quite a ways to shower house but much quieter than other campgrounds on Smithville lake. More family friendly," explains Robin R., describing the camping atmosphere for those interested in the lake.
Historical exploration: Watkins Mill State Park includes historical points of interest not far from the campground. "If you like history, take a tour of the woolen mill part. Very cool," shares Josh P., offering an educational activity option for visitors seeking more than just outdoor recreation.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Weston Bend State Park Campground receives praise for its site spacing. "Site 26 is one of the few basic sites. While some of the other sites were very close to each other, this one is relatively isolated. It's big too," reports Barbie G., pointing out one of the more secluded options.
Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention the well-maintained bathrooms at Wallace State Park. "Sparkling clean showers and lovely grounds," notes Kevin S., emphasizing the high standard of cleanliness at this campground located within 45 minutes of Edgerton.
Lake views: Some campers prefer the electric-only sites at Smiths Fork Recreation Area for their proximity to water. "We had a nice RV site with electric. The best part is the view of and access to the lake! So beautiful and relaxing," Julie B. shares, adding that "the full hookup sites don't have a view of the lake."
What you should know
Seasonal water shutoffs: Smith's Fork Recreation Area Camping may turn off water during cold weather. "We stayed in October and due to unseasonably cold weather they shut off water with no notice and halfway through our stay. Ended up leaving early since we had no water and also no sewer at site," warns Bridget U., highlighting a potential challenge for late-season visitors.
Limited shade at Crow's Creek: Some areas of the campground offer minimal tree cover. "One big downside for me was the lack of trees—there's maybe one tree per tent site and even fewer around the RV spots. Shade is minimal, and there's really no sense of being in the woods," explains Sayler O., contrasting with the equestrian facilities described elsewhere.
Varying site quality: At Weston Bend State Park, campsites vary significantly in quality and privacy. "Visual Privacy Between Adjacent Sites: Some more than others," notes Roger W., providing important context for site selection when making reservations.
