What to do
Fishing at Lake Perry Campground: The 71-acre lake offers excellent bank and boat fishing opportunities with well-maintained piers. "We just drove in hoping that there was a suitable site for a 30' motorhome available. There were 3. The campground is more suitable for tents and small trailers. The cost for a site with electric was $15.00 for a senior. $22.00 normally," notes Angela from Lake Perry Campground.
Disc golf at Paul B. Johnson: The park maintains two 18-hole disc golf courses through mature pine forests. "Located on a massive lake and two 18 hole disc golf courses. We managed to make our way down the weekend of an ice storm and the park rangers made their rounds making sure everybody was okay and had plenty of firewood," shares JR R. from Paul B. Johnson State Park Campground.
Kayaking at Turkey Fork: The recreation area offers boat rentals and easy water access for paddlers. "This place is a local favorite. Nice and friendly atmosphere. I used to enjoy visiting as a child. Brought my husband and kids for the weekend for their first time. It was so quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed the recreational area all to ourselves," writes Ashley F.
What campers like
Clean bathhouses: Most established campgrounds maintain serviceable facilities. "Bathroom, shower, trail. What more do you need. I wanted to checkout the trail but the rain kept coming but at least it was warm 65°. Nice place to stop on my journey east," reports Stacie O. about Lake Perry Campground.
Quiet atmosphere at Turkey Fork: Campers appreciate the peaceful setting and fishing opportunities. "Very clean and quiet. Rangers were present at all times but not bugging anyone. I will be back here. There wasn't a lot of fish biting. Still a great relaxing place," says Heather L. from Turkey Fork Rec Area.
Wildlife viewing: The area supports diverse bird populations and wildlife. "We have camped here in tents and in our travel trailer and this place is great for both! Spots are spread out for the most part and have picnic tables, grills and some have fire rings. The lake is nice in the summer for fishing and swimming, but if you're looking for a large boating area this ain't it," comments J K. about Paul B. Johnson.
