What to do
Disc golf adventures: Coal Bluff Park features a disc golf course winding through wooded areas. "Grew up coming here for the summer to fish, swim, ski and use the water park... The trails are an addition to the park. We love to get out and walk the woods," notes Bruce F. about Roosevelt State Park Campground.
Lake fishing opportunities: Shadow Lake at Roosevelt State Park and the Pearl River at Coal Bluff offer good fishing spots. "Good bass fishing," reports Brad O. about Roosevelt State Park. At Coal Bluff Park, you'll find a boat ramp for easy water access.
Nature trail exploration: The Forest Service Road 526 area offers isolated spots for hiking. "Big site no fire ring no other camp sites that I have seen," notes Jacob F. about this dispersed camping option. These trails provide opportunities to spot local wildlife in the Bienville National Forest.
What campers like
Lakefront camping spots: Campers appreciate sites with water views. "This campsite was not crowded at all and really peaceful. I stayed in site 13 which was right on the lake. The view was beautiful. The spot was really large with plenty of room for tents and hammocks," shares Danielle L. about Roosevelt State Park Campground.
Pet exercise areas: For those seeking dog friendly campgrounds near Morton, many sites offer ample space. "The old campground is where we like to stay. Mostly quiet and this is the side with the primitive tent camping. This side also has a good bit of shaded spots that are on the water," explains Bruce F. about Roosevelt State Park.
Overnight convenience: Wendy Oaks RV Resort provides an excellent stopover option. "Wendy Oaks was the perfect stop on our way down to Florida. Beautiful views, lots of wildlife, super helpful manager, good Wifi, and full hookups," reports Renee. This pet-friendly park allows dogs throughout the grounds.
What you should know
Campsite maintenance varies: Some campgrounds have ongoing improvement efforts. "Been camping there for years. Some of the sites are pretty rough and in need of repair and they are working on them in stages," reports Andy B. about Roosevelt State Park.
Bathhouse conditions: Bathroom facilities can differ between campgrounds. At LeFleur's Bluff State Park, "Bathouse needs some attention. Only one of 3 stalls works in womens side. One small and the larger handicap access one has stained floor," notes Janet H.
Seasonal closures: Water amenities may close during certain times. "Pool and slide was closed (probably COVID related??) as were the bath houses," mentioned Grant C. about Roosevelt State Park. Check ahead when planning visits centered around swimming facilities.
Tips for camping with families
Water activities for kids: Yogi on the Lake offers numerous water-based options. "Fun campground for the kiddos. Loved all of the activities and amenities available. Water park was ice cold so we didn't get to use it. Activity center was awesome especially for rainy days," shares Claire M.
Animal watching opportunities: Many campgrounds feature wildlife viewing. "We sat outside even in the 98+ heat to see the activity on the lake... We saw a 7ft gator swimming and paying us no mind," reports Nick W. about LeFleur's Bluff State Park.
Playground access: Some campgrounds feature play areas. "So much fun, so much to do! We stayed on the lakes edge, had visits from geese, ducks, rabbits and squirrels. Beautiful and very clean area. Pool, slides, jumping pad, playground, mini golf, tennis, basketball, planned activities each day for family fun," explains Shirley B. about Yogi on the Lake.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: RVers should note varying pad conditions. "Our site was a very tight pull thru site. We definitely wouldn't of been able to pull out if the park was full. The site was very sloped so getting in the camper was difficult because the steps were so high off the ground," warns Ashley S. about Yogi on the Lake.
Full hookup availability: Timberlake Campground offers complete services for RVers. "You can just roll in, find a spot and let the office know you're there, or better yet, reserve a spot and make sure there is room for you. The sites are clean, level and I believe they all have hookups up to 50amp," says J K.
Pet-friendly RV parks: Dog friendly campground options near Morton include several with RV accommodations. "The grounds are well maintained with a beautiful view. A knowledgeable attendant welcomed us and escorted us to our site. Clean restroom and showers. With easy access to electric, waste and trash," reports Andrew B. about Wendy Oaks.
