Equestrian camping near Harris, Minnesota offers direct access to miles of dedicated horse trails within state parks and forests. The St. Croix River valley creates rolling terrain with elevation changes between 800-900 feet, providing varied topography for riders throughout the region. During spring and fall, overnight temperatures can drop into the 40s, making warm bedding essential for both humans and horses.
What to do
Trail riding through oak savanna: Wild River State Park features scenic riding paths through diverse ecosystems. "Love the scenic trails and all the park has to offer. Hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, exploring, informational programs, and the wooded campsites," shares Jeff L.
Winter equestrian activities: Seasonal riding options continue even during colder months at select parks. "2/8/20-2/9/20... We snowshoed and skied. I really enjoyed the snowshoe hike along the St Croix River and watched the full moon rise. The ski trails were groomed and there were miles of trails," notes Joanna B.
Riverside exploration: Take horses along waterfront paths for scenic views and water access points. "Beautiful spot on the St Croix River. Circled by flowers (goldenrod in the late summer), brush and trees," writes amber N. about the Buck Hill site at Sand Dunes State Forest Ann Lake.
What campers like
Spacious corrals and hitching posts: Horse-specific amenities make overnight stays comfortable for equine companions. "Spacious peaceful campsites in a wooded area near lake Ann. No elect or showers. Vault toilets," explains Susan W. about the facilities at Sand Dunes State Forest Ann Lake.
Privacy between horse sites: Bunker Hills Regional Park offers secluded camping options for equestrians. "Huge waterpark, miles of bike trails," mentions Tiffany W., while Krista T. adds, "Despite many of these things not being anything that I have a slight interest in, this somehow works for the park and it feels like a hidden paradise."
Equestrian-friendly campfire areas: Designated fire rings accommodate evening gatherings after long rides. "The sites are spacious and spread out, electric hookups at all sites, swim pond is great for kids, and other amenities like an archery range and hiking trails are fantastic," reports John H.
What you should know
Limited shower facilities: Most equestrian camps offer basic amenities but may lack shower houses. At Father Hennepin State Park, Amy G. notes, "Each site has a fire ring with a grate that swings back and forth, depending on if you want to chill by the flames, or grill off some burgers."
Reservation requirements: Book early for horse campsites, especially during peak season. "In Minnesota, reservations are required. We've found that if you make them in advance, and then decide to cancel the day of the reservation, there are cancellation fees and first night fees," warns Amy G.
Seasonal road conditions: Access to horse camps may be affected by weather and seasonal closures. "30' class C motor home. Some overhanging branches on the road in scrape the top and sides. Campsites are nice, mowed, gravel parking," reports Andy L. about Sand Dunes State Forest Ann Lake.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly horse activities: Lake Elmo Park Reserve offers family-oriented horse experiences. "Very organized and clean facilities. Reasonably priced," mentions Tina H., while Scott M. adds, "Trails are there to hike and walk. Water to swim and plenty of bike paths."
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Children can observe local animals during trail rides. "We spent an entire day hiking and it was decent hiking along the river, some of the trails where a little confusing and trying to figure out where we at, but we made it just hiked a little further than we wanted to! This seems to be the hot spot for horses," shares Kate H.
Playground access: Some equestrian areas feature playgrounds for younger visitors. "They have a home made lake that has a sand bottom but it has chlorine like a pool so no weeds. Great for swimming," states Timothy S. about Lake Elmo Park Reserve.
Tips from RVers
Trailer parking dimensions: Country Camping Tent & RV Park on the Rum River accommodates large horse trailers with designated parking. "This place does have 30amp and 50amp hook ups and has pull through spots and sewer sites so that needs to change on this app. Max trailer length that I've seen here is 70'. Anyone can fit in here!" explains Spencer C.
Road width considerations: Access roads to some horse camps may be narrow or have low-hanging branches. "This campground is great for everyone! It's has a heated pool, splash pad area, BIG playground area, indoor game room, HUGE sites! You can either relax in the pool or even take a ride down the rum river in a rented canoe, tube, or kayak," adds Spencer C.
Power availability: Many horse camps lack electrical hookups for RVs. "I have a small travel trailer that is self contained so I could reserve spots down by the river. Ability to go tubing down the river. You can even get pizza delivered by the local Chanticlear Pizza!" notes Barbara B.
