With only 14 first-come, first-served sites and no reservation system, Ocqueoc Falls State Forest Campground rewards early arrivals. The campground sits just off M-68 in northern Michigan, directly across the road from Ocqueoc Falls, with most sites running along the Ocqueoc River upstream from the falls. Reviewers note you can hear road noise from the highway, so site selection matters. Facilities are genuinely rustic: a hand-pump well, vault toilets, and picnic tables. The $20 nightly fee runs on the honor system. RVs are welcome up to 20 feet, and at least one reviewer fit a small travel trailer into a reasonably level site without trouble.
The riverside sites are the draw. Several campers mention having direct water access from their site, including a private path to the river from site 2. Maria L. considers the trail system the campground's strongest feature: "Personally I think the best part about Ocqueoc Falls State Campground is the trail system." The loop covers roughly seven miles with shorter options, passing through varied terrain and following the river downstream. Eagles have been spotted overhead. The falls themselves are multi-tiered and shallow enough for swimming, and they hold the distinction of being the only ADA-accessible waterfall in the country, according to multiple reviewers.
Summer weekends fill the campground fast. June through August brings the heaviest use, and the falls area across the road draws day visitors on top of overnight campers. Weekdays and the fall shoulder season tend to be quieter, with fewer neighbors and good foliage along the trails. Cell service is limited, with one or two bars possible on Verizon but little to nothing on other carriers. The nearest resupply is in Millersburg, which has a small grocery and gas station; Rogers City, farther north, has a larger grocery store. Campers can also browse places to camp around Millersburg if the sites here are already taken on arrival.
For a different setup in the same corridor, Ocqueoc Cabins & Campsites offers an alternative about seven miles north.
