Best Cabin Camping near Mayfield, MI

Several campgrounds around Mayfield, Michigan provide cabin rentals with varying amenities and comfort levels. Holly Recreation Area offers rentable cabins with modern bathrooms and shower facilities nearby, while Pontiac Lake Recreation Area features three small cabins in its East campground area. Outdoor Adventures Lake Shore Resort maintains over 70 cabins that remain open year-round, with full bathroom facilities and heating options for winter stays. According to one visitor at Jellystone Park, "We stayed in one of the deluxe cabins which are 1 bedroom cabins with a full bathroom and a sleeping loft. The layout of the cabin is great and it includes a screened in porch." Most cabins include standard furnishings like beds, tables, and seating areas, though amenity levels vary significantly between rustic and deluxe options.

Rustic cabins and more luxurious accommodations can be found throughout the region's state parks and private resorts. Bald Mountain Recreation Area offers two rustic cabins popular with hunters and scout troops that sleep 10-15 people each, featuring wood-burning stoves but no electricity. In contrast, Camp Dearborn provides both rustic cabins and 16 resort cabins with more modern amenities. Pet policies vary by location, with some properties like Outdoor Adventures Lake Shore Resort allowing pets with breed restrictions. A camper at Groveland Oaks County Park noted, "I don't believe the cabins are pet friendly though. It's probably the only reason we haven't been back." Reservations are essential during peak summer months, particularly for cabins at popular locations like Addison Oaks County Park and Groveland Oaks County Park, which operate from May through October.

Most cabin rentals require guests to bring their own bedding, pillows, towels, and cooking supplies. Basic cabins typically have limited kitchen facilities, often just a fire ring outside for cooking. Some deluxe cabins include kitchenettes with microwaves, mini-refrigerators, and basic cookware. Firewood is available for purchase at most campground offices or camp stores, with some locations offering delivery to the cabin site. Visitors staying at rustic cabins should pack flashlights, lanterns, and extra blankets, especially during spring and fall when temperatures can drop significantly at night. On-site camp stores at larger resorts like Jellystone Park and Outdoor Adventures provide basic groceries and camping supplies, though selection is limited and prices tend to be higher than nearby supermarkets.

Bathrooms were dated and we arrived Monday after Labor Day so I can't judge them. They had a FULL HOUSE on Labor Day per the front gate. I was very impressed there was no garbage at campsites and picked up very well.

GREAT biking trails you can catch on premise and bike over to Kensington and to the charming town of Milford

The ADA sites had pavement surrounding the fire rings and space at the picnic tables for a wheel chair.

    Jellystone Park North Port Huron

Lots to do for lots of money

We stayed in one of the "deluxe" cabins which are 1 bedroom cabins with a full bathroom and a sleeping loft. The layout of the cabin is great and it includes a screened in porch. The cabin was pretty grimy though. The floors hadn't been moped in weeks, the bathroom needed to be scrubbed not just wiped down, etc. We encountered lots of maintenance issues - burned out lightbulbs, malfunctioning toilets, TV remotes missing or not working, A/C units broken. These are things that I might expect at a "typical" campground, but at $265 per night for midweek, I expected better.

The campground amenities are numerous but we found the hours to be limited and a lot of the amenities were additional costs which we thought was excessive given the price we were paying for the cabin.

    Frankenmuth Jellystone Park

Fun RV park and very close to downtown

Our site was averaged out to $82.71 a night with the weekly rate discount.

We were in Site# 306 (a deluxe plus RV site - be aware that some of these are back-ins and not clearly labeled on the site map - we had to change sites to a pull-thru). We had Full hook- up with a gravel pull-through.
We travel towing a 14 foot trailer and were able to fit both in our pull through site along with my jeep.
The site was easy to level.

Our site was not shaded with zero trees. We weren’t able to sit outside because of the direct sun until after 8:30pm.
This was a smaller lot with our neighbors fairly close.

The deluxe plus lot comes without a concrete patio but with a picnic table and fire ring. They do sell firewood and will deliver to your site.

There is free WiFi. They do not offer Cable TV but there are quite a few channel options.

There is not a community outdoor kitchen or community fire pit.

They do not provide garbage service at your site so you must walk to garbage dumpster.

You are allowed to ride personal golf carts. They also allow you to rent pedal bikes. They do not provide golf cart rentals.

They do have a heated indoor and heated outdoor Swimming pool and one hot tub.

There is a Playground. They also offer Gaga ball, basketball sport court, and volleyball courts. There is a Game room for kids. They have a Putt putt course and Jumping pad.

They have a great general store. There is a separate Activity Center for kids.
There are tons of scheduled activities for kids like wagon rides, arts & crafts, scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, etc. Activities are scheduled all day from 9am to 8pm.

There is a snack bar on site from 4pm-9:30pm where you can get hot dogs, brats, pretzels, nachos, ice cream, etc.

The streets are mostly paved and good for riding bikes.

This is an RV park with cabins to rent also. Tent camping is also allowed.

They have two shower houses. The shower house has the typical stalls. There is a great area to hang clothes and store your toiletries in the shower stall. These are kept very clean.

There is a laundry facility. It is a cash only facility, but they have a change machine in the arcade room. There are approximately 4washers and 4 dryers. It is approximately $2.75 to wash and $0.75 to dry a load.

They do not have a fenced in dog park. There are areas to walk dogs though.

Flies were an issue and bug spray was needed.

There were no trails to hike off of the campground.

Some fun things to do outside of the campground are Frankenmuth FunShips (chocolate & wine tasting), the Golden Ticket Trolley, the Bavarian Belle (popcorn & sodas) River Place Shops, wineries, and Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland store. This RV park is less than a mile to downtown/River Place Shops where there is tons of shopping.

    Bald Mountain Recreation Area

Amazing place to hike but campground not included.

I absolutely adore Bald Mountain Recreation area! The trails are well maintained and well marked. There is also tons of clean, easy to access lakes within the park too. Perfect for kayaking, paddle boarding, or fishing. Unfortunately there is not a camping area within the recreation area. There is however two rustic cabins that are available for rental year round. They are popular with hunters and scout troops. The cabins sleep about 10-15 people if remember correctly. They are rustic, so they don’t have electricity or heat but there is a large wood burning stove.

    Seven Lakes State Park Campground

    Fab beach

This is a fabulous campground! There are over 20 sites, about half of which are located lake side (not directly on the lake, but there are little paths that lead you there and you can somewhat see the water from these sites.) There is a boat launch on one end of campground and the amazing beach on the other. The water is clear and warm (perfect lake for swimming) and there is both sand and grassy areas on the fairly large beach. The beach also offers picnic tables and benches. The only negative aspect I can see about this campground is that the sites are right on top of each other, so if you have a loud group or a generator next to you, it is noisy. But most campgrounds have sites set real close together, so you will find this pretty much everywhere. Def camp here! About an hours drive from a Pictured Rocks National Park. There are no showers or running water. Camp hosts were very nice, helpful, & welcoming.

Summer temperatures typically reach 75-85°F, while winter overnight lows often drop below 20°F, making heated cabins particularly valuable from November through March.

What to do

Hiking trails and nature exploration: At Holly Recreation Area, visitors can access multiple trail systems for day hiking. "This is a giant recreation area that features a campground, 3 lakes, tons of trails, and even a splash zone for kids," notes Kate K. The park maintains several well-marked paths through diverse woodland habitats.

Disc golf courses: Addison Oaks County Park maintains a complete disc golf course open to campers. "Tons of trails for hiking and biking. They have kids activities on the weekends, a lake for swimming, great playgrounds and everything is really clean," reports Wendy K. The course is accessible year-round, though winter play may be limited by snow conditions.

Water activities: Multiple lakes throughout the region support swimming, fishing, and boating opportunities. "The beach is nice, a little small, but clean and fun," notes Jennifer O. about Addison Oaks. Most lakes in the area feature catch-and-release fishing, with bass, bluegill, and pike being common catches.

What campers like

Well-maintained facilities: Campers consistently mention the cleanliness of bathroom facilities. At Holly Recreation Area, one visitor shares, "The bathrooms were clean. There were several playgrounds, bench swings, play fields and even a basketball court. The ADA sites had pavement surrounding the fire rings and space at the picnic tables for a wheel chair." Most modern cabin areas provide accessible facilities.

Private wooded sites: Many campers appreciate the natural setting of cabin areas. "Actually feels like camping with all the trees, not lined up in a farmer's field. Lots of trails and great beach with a dog friendly area," writes Zachary S. about Holly Recreation Area. Site privacy varies significantly between campgrounds and between loops within the same park.

Winter access: Outdoor Adventures Lake Shore Resort stands out for its year-round cabin availability. "Great opportunities for winter sports. Pools, lakes, mini golf. Designed for young families. Pet friendly but has restrictions on the type of dog," notes Despina S. Winter cabin rentals typically require reservations 2-3 months in advance.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabin facilities require advance booking, especially during peak seasons. At Groveland Oaks County Park, availability can be limited. "We joined a group site and meet up every major holiday at Groveland. We feel like we went up North without the driving four hours," explains Mike N. Oakland County parks typically open reservations six months in advance.

Pet policies: Rules regarding pets in cabins vary widely between facilities. "We love this place and so do my 3 dogs. We got a secluded campsite, and it's gorgeous- tucked into the woods and was easy to back into," shares Ashley F. about her experience at Holly Recreation Area. Some locations charge additional pet fees ranging from $10-25 per night.

Amenity variations: Cabin styles range from rustic to modern across the region. "We stayed on site 118 in the trillium loop. Actually feels like camping with all the trees, not lined up in a farmer's field," explains a visitor at Holly Recreation Area. Basic cabins may lack running water, while deluxe options include kitchen facilities and private bathrooms.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Covenant Hills Camp offers extensive children's programming. "Great family/ Christian campgrounds... ok for those who care not enjoy alcohol beverages while vacationing, great activities set up for the kids," reports Tammy P. Most family-oriented campgrounds provide weekend activity schedules during summer months.

Swimming options: Many families prioritize water access when selecting cabin locations. "This campground has a lake for swimming, water slide, arcade, boat rentals, mini golf, biking trails and fishing. Lots for kids to do... also skate park and 2 playgrounds," notes Debbie H. about Groveland Oaks County Park. Swimming areas typically operate from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Supply considerations: Families should bring appropriate supplies based on cabin amenities. "We had a large group of families with varying ages and abilities. We used multiple different styles of cabins and a few RV sites, as well as various buildings for activities," shares Heather M. about Covenant Hills. Basic cabins require more extensive packing lists than fully-equipped options.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: When booking at Crystal Creek Christian Campground, RVers should consider power needs. "Want the full camping ambiance $15 a night for rustic tent camping! Great place to take the family even several times a season on a budget!" advises Tammy P. Sites with full hookups cost $25-30 nightly depending on amperage requirements.

Off-season considerations: Many RV parks with cabins offer extended seasons. "Quite the establishment! Almost 150 sites including rustic, full hook up, cabins and even just over a handful of park model units to reserve for your family," notes a visitor at Crystal Creek. Several facilities remain open through October, with limited winter access at select locations.
