What to do
Water activities on Lake Ovid: Sleepy Hollow State Park's 410-acre lake supports fishing for largemouth bass and bluegill. "Fishing is good here for some largemouth bass, and huge blueguils. Lots of traffic being so close to City, but good day excursion," notes Michael P. about Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground.
Hiking trail networks: The region offers multiple trail systems with varying difficulty levels. "Fun backpacking trails best trails close to state capital, fishing, boating, disc golf, horse and bike trails, Geocaching available," says Jacob B. about Sleepy Hollow's trail system.
Kayaking waterways: The Maple River offers paddling opportunities near Laingsburg. "September 9th 2017 I hosted a Kayak/Canoe trip and we used this location for our landing and camping. The amount of nature was overwhelming. Lots of turtles and ducks to be seen," shares David F. about Maple River Campground.
What campers like
Large campsites with tree coverage: Many sites provide natural screening and shade. "We stayed during very hot weather at the beginning of July 2020. I wanted to visit Potter Park Zoo so we choose to stay at Sleepy Hollow for a few days. Our site backed up to trees and I can't recall seeing our neighbors to the left or right," reports Amy D.
Swimming beaches: Multiple parks offer designated swimming areas. "Nice beach but you have to walk a short distance to get there. Bathrooms are clean, paved roads and grass sites," mentions Ricky C. about Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground.
Playground facilities: Family-friendly amenities are available at several parks. "I grew up camping at this campground and would recommend it. There is a beach and playground, but it is quite the walk from the campground. Plan to drive or bike ride if you have trouble walking long distances," advises Stephanie C. about Bishop Lake.
What you should know
Extension cords required at some sites: Electrical hookups may be distant from tent pads. "Be sure to bring at least 100 feet of extension chord if you want electricity, because the power ports are not as accessible from some areas," warns Nathan V. about Sleepy Hollow.
Seasonal campground closures: Many private campgrounds operate on limited schedules. Myers Lake Camping & Cabins operates seasonally with cabins available from May through mid-October according to their schedule.
Distance to amenities: Beach and recreation areas often require transportation from campsites. "The park is very large, so it is always good to have a vehicle able to drive to the trails and beach," notes Nathan V. about Bishop Lake Campground.
Variable site privacy: Site layout and screening varies widely between campgrounds. "There isn't much to do in the area, but if you are all about sticking around the campground, it is a fun place to be," explains Stephanie C.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Seek campgrounds with dedicated children's amenities. "We took a chance coming out here to kick off the summer as a family and couldn't be more please with the staff and the grounds! So much for the family to do!" shares Samantha S. about Taylor's Beach Campground.
Halloween events: Book early for special weekend activities. "Every year they put together an awesome Halloween trick or treat weekend, but be sure to book the day of six months before because otherwise you will not get a site," recommends Stephanie C.
Splash pad options: Water features provide additional recreation. "Great splash pad for little kids, awesome playground, bathrooms are nice," notes Jeff O. about Taylor's Beach Campground.
Tips from RVers
Power limitations: Older electrical systems may struggle during peak demand. "The park needs to upgrade the electrical system as this was putting a strain on their electrical equipment," observes Amy D. about Sleepy Hollow.
Site selection for shade: Consider seasonal sun exposure when booking. "We stayed in a rented rv w company camping trip. The facilities were not well kept but it is a large family friendly campground with plenty of weekend events and activities. The sites are all near enough to the lake for all to enjoy," explains Beth H. about Bruin Lake Campground.
Dump station fees: Some campgrounds charge additional fees for services. "You do have to pay $5 for shower use and $5 to use the dump station. They do have ice and firewood for sale there, but there isn't a little store so you have to leave the campground and drive a few miles for that," advises Alexandra M. about Maple River Campground.
