Best RV Parks & Resorts near Ishpeming, MI

Country Village RV Park in Ishpeming provides full hookup sites with 50-amp electric service, water, and sewer connections from May 15 to October 15. The park features level gravel sites designed for large motorhomes and travel trailers with spacious pull-through options. "Large sites as it is a big rig park. Very clean bathrooms. They are adding a large game area and they have a swimming pool and hot tub," noted one camper about the amenities. Rippling Rivers RV Resort near Marquette offers concrete pads at select sites with full hookups, while Gitche Gumee RV Park & Campground provides seasonal camping from April through mid-November with both back-in and pull-through rv sites that accommodate larger rigs.

Throughout the Upper Peninsula, most RV parks maintain good Verizon cell service coverage, though signal strength varies in more remote locations. Dump stations are available at most parks, with some offering on-site sewer hookups at premium sites. Winter camping options are limited, with only a few facilities like The Ojibwa Casino Baraga RV Park remaining open year-round. Pet policies generally allow leashed dogs, though some parks restrict certain breeds or limit access to specific areas. A review mentioned that "the electrical system can't handle the power draw from the big rigs" at some older facilities, suggesting travelers bring surge protectors when visiting during peak summer months when air conditioner use is high.

    Camping in the Clouds

    Friendly staff but very rustic

Overall our stay was pleasant the campground is very rustic facilities on premise could definitely use some TLC. We stayed in a pull through site which was decent. Campground overall was very quiet mainly seasonal or long term sites.

    Munising Tourist Park Campground

Nice campground, but it can't handle all the electrical draw for every site

This is a busy campground right on Munising Bay on Lake Superior. Reservations for the busy season need to be made months in advance, and even reserving 6 months before our arrival date, we got the last spot. We have a 22 foot travel trailer, so we can fit onto most any site, but this campground draws some huge rigs pulled by tractor trailers.

The people in the office are great. The beach on the bay is spectacular. Overall nice campground at a very good price.

But this is an older campground, and the electrical system can't handle the power draw from the big rigs. People at the end of the power line - beware! Bring your surge protector to protect your electrical system.

We were fine until day 3 where the temps hit 88 degrees, and the big rigs were running their double air conditioners, while we were running just our fridge, water heater and a fan. Draws about 6 amps. We didn't have enough power coming to our site even for that, and the surge protector shut everything down. Thank goodness it did it's job and protected the electrical system on the trailer. At one point the power coming into the site was only 98 instead of 120ish.

So while the big boys further up the line were running 2 air conditioners, we weren't getting enough power to run a water heater, fridge and a fan. We had to put our water heater and fridge onto propane and do without even a fan in 88 degree heat. Thank goodness our fridge and water heater can run on propane, and the lights work on DC, but the fan runs on 110, so it didn't work.

The people in the office were apologetic, and they said we should have power when it cools down and there aren't so many air conditioners running. That was small comfort when we were paying for a 50 amp site for our 30 amp trailer, and we couldn't even run a fan. At least the surge protector kept us from damaging the trailer electrical system - we hope!

    Van Riper State Park Campground

    Great state park for families

Van Riper State Park is a must-visit if you’re traveling through Michigan's Upper Peninsula.  It’s popular year-round, although camping is only open between May and October. Stop for the day to hike the trails and go for a swim, or stay a week and enjoy the sunsets and serenity.

The state park covers both sides of the highway with the campground and day-use area on the south side and a huge section of trails and wildlife viewing areas on the north.

There are 147 sites in the modern campground, including some sites with 50-amp electric service, and there are another 40 sites in the rustic campground. Plus, there are two mini cabins in the modern campground if you don’t own a tent or RV. All of the campsites have a fire ring and picnic table.

One thing we noticed is that the sites at Van Riper are very large– so much bigger than many sites we’ve seen at other state parks. This means there is plenty of space for your trailer, truck, bikes, screen tent, kids’ toys, etc. without feeling like you’re infringing on your neighbor.

Another plus for the state park is the laundry facilities. Two washers and dryers are located in the restroom building near the beach.

Van Riper State Park is extremely family-friendly, with activities for everyone. There are approximately 5 miles of hiking trails on the north side of the state park. One trail provides a very nice overlook of Lake Michigamme and the surrounding area. Other trails run along the Peshekee River or through the woods and may even provide the chance to see the moose that live in the area. The trails are not difficult, but there is some elevation to get to the lookout. If you don’t want to hike the whole 5-plus miles from the campground and back, you can drive and park at the group campground and go from there.

A sandy beach awaits both kids and adults on Lake Michigamme. The lake is popular as it is much warmer than most of the lakes in the Upper Peninsula. A large, fairly new playscape is also located near the beach, as well as a swing set. One of the most unique activities is a bike pump track. This is the only state park that we saw that had one. It was very popular with the kids and is conveniently located between the campground and the day-use area. The lake is popular for fishing and if you have a boat you can use the launch in the back of the park. It also is a good location for kayaking.

Pictured Rocks RV Park and Campground

    Excellent new campground

Open, level gravel sites and some concrete pads scattered throughout this pretty new campground. A few baby trees in the open meadow are trying to get started, but other than those there is no shade. We stayed in a full hook up 50 amp site, and experienced no power issues despite 2 days of freakishly high winds and scorching heat in the 90s. This is an immaculately clean and well run campground. Wi fi is ok for email and phone scrolling social media. The only reason we didn't give 5 stars is due to construction in the campground with dump trucks and beep beep beep of machinery backing up every day. Once they are finished and the shade trees grow this will be a premier campground in a beautiful area. Pets allowed on leash. Trash receptacles convenient to each area of the campground. Bath house with coin laundry machines.

    Baraga State Park Campground

    Centralized spot

We are on site 22. Very spacious have room for our 20ft TT and could have put up a large screen tent but there is a big dip in the site which caused a huge puddle where we would have placed it. Nice view of the lake can see at least part of it from almost anywhere in the camp. Picnic table and fire ring on every site. There are several full hook up sites (water sewer electric). There are a few pull through sites. Some of the sites (the ones a crossed from us) have a huge dip right at the edge of the site to get in out of the site that can cause some issues with low sitting vehicles. Hosts were very friendly and informative, offered some scheduled programs through out the week and free coffee and doughnuts Saturday morning at the host site. DNR staff almost always available. Serves as a great base point to see probably hundreds of water falls. Some are located just down the street from the campground. Mordern shower clean and had hot water and restroom, clean but toilets are a little tricky to flush...doesn't seem to have enough flushing power. Verizon phone works great... hotspot from Verizon phone works great as well. there is also some WiFi available from somewhere that works but doesn't work(cuts in and out) not sure if it is the parks or a nearby place. The roads in the campground are narrrow but manageable. The park is located on a main highway (41) so you get the noise from the traffic on the road...sometimes this noise can make it hard to have a quiet conversation with those in your camping party....it quiets down some at night but still a lot of noise. Also train tracks runs along the back of the campground which can be quite noisy. We've been here almost a week and have heard only one train(we aren't here a lot during the day we are out exploring). Nice day park across the road from the campground. Located about 30 min. From Houghton (and a Walmart) and about an hour drive to the porcupine mountains.

    Country Village RV Park

    Nice Place to Stay

This park is located about 15 minutes from the town of Marquette and is a great alternative if you can’t get a site in the Marquette Tourist Park (which is closer to town and very popular in the summer). It is located off US-41 which is a major Upper Peninsula thoroughfare but set back about ½ miles so you don’t get road noise but it is still convenient.  The campground is located behind (and within walking distance of) a shopping area that has a meat market, grocery, gas station, movie theater, bowling alley, a few restaurants and a brewery (which has good, inexpensive beer and food). It is also located next to an RV dealer/service center/camp store which is convenient if you need anything. Nearby are some interesting museums including the National Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and the Michigan Iron Museum.  You are only about 20 minutes from the town of Marquette which is worth a visit.

The park and facilities are well-maintained. The restrooms were super clean as was the pool and all the grounds. The people in the office were super nice in helping us pick a site and with information about the area. The park has over 105 RV sites with varying services and some being held by seasonal people. There are lots of amenities (which we did not use) including swimming pool, hot tub, playground, basketball courts, and more. The pool was super crowded and noisy so if you don’t want to hear kids screaming, stay away from sites close to the pool. The park does not take online reservations so you must call them directly.

We were assigned site #104 but could tell our motorhome was not going to get level in the site so we had to straddle the site and park partly in the adjacent grassy area. Luckily, the ground was dry to we didn’t make any deep ruts. Our site did have a nice shade tree on the patio which was welcomed because of the hot weather. The WiFi never worked at our site. We were able to get a clear view of the sky for our satellite television.

    Bay Furnace Campground

    Relax

Wonderful wooded sites and ours had a path to Lake Superior. Can be a little tight for big rigs. Best sites are reservable, rest are first come first served. No electric or water at the sites. A couple of water fill stations in the campground as well as at the dump station. Family enjoyed the sunset cruise to Pictured Rocks. Kids and dog had lots of fun playing in the lake, but it was cold. Lots of day hikes in the area with our favorite being a trip to the beach in the Pictured Rocks.

    Bay Furnace Campground

    Beautiful!

Located in Hiawatha National Forest on Lake Superior. We were on motorcycles & this was a spur of the moment pick for us but even though we arrived late in the afternoon we had a few sites to choose from. The sites offer plenty of privacy and are large and well maintained. Located on the southern Lake Superior shoreline, the beach area was fantastic & the water was clean/clear but cold as would be expected. perfect for a refreshing cool off in hot weather! There were waterfront sites, vaulted toilets, fire rings with grill tops. For those with Rv's there was a dump station as well. No electric or water hook ups available. Lake Superior access is a plus for us however it is not accessible by boat. Plenty of nearby stores, gas, food. Pictured Rocks is within driving distance and worth the trip.

Guide to Ishpeming

Near Ishpeming, Michigan, RV camping options stretch across the western Upper Peninsula, where temperatures range from summer highs around 75°F to winter lows well below freezing. The area receives significant snowfall, often exceeding 160 inches annually. Many campgrounds in this region offer sites with lake or river access, with camping seasons typically running from May through mid-October due to harsh winter conditions.

What to do

Mountain biking access: Rippling Rivers RV Resort connects directly to local trail systems, making it convenient for cycling enthusiasts. "If you love mountain biking or hiking you stay here. Period. You are right on the trails. If you have little ones the grom trail rims next to the top camp site," notes Rory L., who frequents the area.

Fishing opportunities: Farquar-Metsa Tourist Park provides access to the Escanaba River with excellent fishing options. According to Randall J., the park offers "great fishing on Escanaba river" and is conveniently located within the town of Gwinn, making it accessible for day trips from Ishpeming.

Swimming areas: Multiple campgrounds feature swimming options during summer months. At Rippling Rivers RV Resort, one camper mentioned, "The hot tub was nice after hiking 11 miles in pictured rocks," while another noted that Farquar-Metsa Tourist Park has a "beautiful natural swimming area in the rear of the property."

What campers like

Casino proximity: The Ojibwa Casino Baraga RV Park offers easy access to gaming. One camper reported, "Huge parking lot off the highway, so no road noise. Casino is a bit smoky, but not that bad. It is mostly slots, but still fun. $20 free play when you sign up."

Clean facilities: Pictured Rocks RV Park and Campground maintains well-kept common areas. Jennifer B. noted, "This is an immaculately clean and well run campground. Wi fi is ok for email and phone scrolling social media." The park features both gravel sites and some concrete pads.

Local berry picking: Campers at Farquar-Metsa Tourist Park enjoy seasonal foraging. Vincent S. mentioned, "We picked blueberries and raspberries right here on premise," adding another layer to the camping experience beyond standard amenities.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Many campgrounds in the area require advance bookings. At Farquar-Metsa Tourist Park, "they are by reservation only. No 'walk-in's' if you will," explains Emilee S., which can impact last-minute camping plans.

Seasonal limitations: Most RV parks near Ishpeming close during winter months. While the Ojibwa Casino RV Park remains open year-round, most facilities like Marquette Tourist Park operate only from "May 15 to October 15."

Site variability: Campground layouts differ significantly throughout the region. At Marquette Tourist Park Campground, Lee D. observed, "Only the FHU sites on the perimeter have paved camper pads, all others are either dirt, grass, or a combo. The electric sites closest to the Dead River are, although wide and fairly deep, still in an open grassy area with very few trees."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Country Village RV Park continues to expand its recreational facilities. According to a camper, "Awesome park. Playground which they are expanding... They are adding a large game area and they have a swimming pool and hot tub."

Swimming options: Multiple parks offer water recreation for children. At Gitche Gumee RV Park & Campground, one family mentioned, "You can walk across the street to the beach along Lake Superior," providing convenient water access without driving.

Budget-friendly activities: Local parks supplement campground amenities. At Farquar-Metsa Tourist Park, campers appreciate being "close to large park" with access to hiking trails and natural areas at no additional cost.

Tips from RVers

Hookup placement: At several campgrounds, the utility connections require planning. Nancy W. noted at Marquette Tourist Park that "the hook-ups are not laid out conveniently on some sites which requires extra hoses and electric cords."

Level sites: At Pictured Rocks RV Park and Campground, Jennifer B. observed the area has "open, level gravel sites and some concrete pads scattered throughout this pretty new campground," making setup easier for larger rigs.

Winter options: RV camping near Ishpeming during winter months is limited. The Ojibwa Casino Baraga RV Park provides year-round camping, though amenities may be restricted. For spring through fall camping, most RVers recommend arriving with full water tanks at early or late season stays when water systems might be turned off to prevent freezing.
