Bathrooms were dated and we arrived Monday after Labor Day so I can't judge them. They had a FULL HOUSE on Labor Day per the front gate. I was very impressed there was no garbage at campsites and picked up very well.

GREAT biking trails you can catch on premise and bike over to Kensington and to the charming town of Milford

      Island Lake Recreation Area

      Hidden Canoe Camps

Island Lake Recreation Area is home to two Huron River Canoe Camps. The sites are boat-in only (!) meaning you must haul any and all gear in a kayak or canoe for your stay. The sites, Canoe Camp #1 and #2, can be only be reserved by calling or visiting the main office.

This is an awesome place to stay, especially if you live in the area, as it provides a backcountry, boat-in camping experience very close to town. The sites each feature a fire ring and picnic table. Canoe #1 sports a floating dock to tie up boats. There is also a vault toilet, and firewood provided for both sites to share, as well recycling and trash cans.

The sites and common area (toilet and garbage cans) are connected by short trails and you may, once in awhile, hear the folks at the site next to you. Thankfully, In my experience, people have always been friendly and respectful.

Pretty park with several well marked trails. We stayed in the Maple loop which had several semi-private sites screened from neighbors by trees. I think site #1 was one of the roomiest and prettiest. The bathrooms were clean. There were several playgrounds, bench swings, play fields and even a basketball court. The ADA sites had pavement surrounding the fire rings and space at the picnic tables for a wheel chair.

Sugarloaf Campground — Waterloo Recreation Area

      A Wonderful Winter Getaway

We stayed in the Southfork Rustic Cabin at the end of Feb and it was lovely much needed get away. The cabin was semi modern (solar lighting) but only a wood stove for heat. Small kitchen unit with table for eating. You had to hike in about a quarter mile to get there, and it sleeps four people with two bunk beds. There is an outside vault toilet behind the cabin. Lots of trails connecting the cabin to the rest of the park. Cheap too! Only $68 per night.

      Frankenmuth Jellystone Park

Fun RV park and very close to downtown

Our site was averaged out to $82.71 a night with the weekly rate discount.

We were in Site# 306 (a deluxe plus RV site - be aware that some of these are back-ins and not clearly labeled on the site map - we had to change sites to a pull-thru). We had Full hook- up with a gravel pull-through.
We travel towing a 14 foot trailer and were able to fit both in our pull through site along with my jeep.
The site was easy to level.

Our site was not shaded with zero trees. We weren’t able to sit outside because of the direct sun until after 8:30pm.
This was a smaller lot with our neighbors fairly close.

The deluxe plus lot comes without a concrete patio but with a picnic table and fire ring. They do sell firewood and will deliver to your site.

There is free WiFi. They do not offer Cable TV but there are quite a few channel options.

There is not a community outdoor kitchen or community fire pit.

They do not provide garbage service at your site so you must walk to garbage dumpster.

You are allowed to ride personal golf carts. They also allow you to rent pedal bikes. They do not provide golf cart rentals.

They do have a heated indoor and heated outdoor Swimming pool and one hot tub.

There is a Playground. They also offer Gaga ball, basketball sport court, and volleyball courts. There is a Game room for kids. They have a Putt putt course and Jumping pad.

They have a great general store. There is a separate Activity Center for kids.
There are tons of scheduled activities for kids like wagon rides, arts & crafts, scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, etc. Activities are scheduled all day from 9am to 8pm.

There is a snack bar on site from 4pm-9:30pm where you can get hot dogs, brats, pretzels, nachos, ice cream, etc.

The streets are mostly paved and good for riding bikes.

This is an RV park with cabins to rent also. Tent camping is also allowed.

They have two shower houses. The shower house has the typical stalls. There is a great area to hang clothes and store your toiletries in the shower stall. These are kept very clean.

There is a laundry facility. It is a cash only facility, but they have a change machine in the arcade room. There are approximately 4washers and 4 dryers. It is approximately $2.75 to wash and $0.75 to dry a load.

They do not have a fenced in dog park. There are areas to walk dogs though.

Flies were an issue and bug spray was needed.

There were no trails to hike off of the campground.

Some fun things to do outside of the campground are Frankenmuth FunShips (chocolate & wine tasting), the Golden Ticket Trolley, the Bavarian Belle (popcorn & sodas) River Place Shops, wineries, and Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland store. This RV park is less than a mile to downtown/River Place Shops where there is tons of shopping.

      Bald Mountain Recreation Area

Amazing place to hike but campground not included.

I absolutely adore Bald Mountain Recreation area! The trails are well maintained and well marked. There is also tons of clean, easy to access lakes within the park too. Perfect for kayaking, paddle boarding, or fishing. Unfortunately there is not a camping area within the recreation area. There is however two rustic cabins that are available for rental year round. They are popular with hunters and scout troops. The cabins sleep about 10-15 people if remember correctly. They are rustic, so they don’t have electricity or heat but there is a large wood burning stove.

      Seven Lakes State Park Campground

      Fab beach

This is a fabulous campground! There are over 20 sites, about half of which are located lake side (not directly on the lake, but there are little paths that lead you there and you can somewhat see the water from these sites.) There is a boat launch on one end of campground and the amazing beach on the other. The water is clear and warm (perfect lake for swimming) and there is both sand and grassy areas on the fairly large beach. The beach also offers picnic tables and benches. The only negative aspect I can see about this campground is that the sites are right on top of each other, so if you have a loud group or a generator next to you, it is noisy. But most campgrounds have sites set real close together, so you will find this pretty much everywhere. Def camp here! About an hours drive from a Pictured Rocks National Park. There are no showers or running water. Camp hosts were very nice, helpful, & welcoming.

    Guide to Grand Blanc

Located about an hour northwest of Detroit, Grand Blanc sits in a wooded region of Michigan featuring several lakes and state recreation areas. The area has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters, making late May through September the most popular camping season. Cabin options around Grand Blanc range from rustic one-room structures to modern units with electricity and indoor plumbing.

    What to do

Hiking trails: The Seven Lakes State Park Campground offers multiple trail options around its lakes. A camper noted, "Seven Lakes has a great hike that takes you all around the lake, as well as smaller loops. You can find challenging hikes or an easy path."

Waterfront activities: Camp Dearborn provides extensive water recreation. "Lots of beach area and water to fish or swim. Activities almost every night. Paddle boats, mini golf, golf, and more," shares a recent visitor.

Winter sports: While many campgrounds close seasonally, some cabin facilities remain open year-round for winter activities. Outdoor Adventures Lake Shore Resort offers "great opportunities for winter sports" according to one reviewer who appreciates the resort's year-round operation.

    What campers like

Wooded privacy: Pontiac Lake Recreation Area offers secluded cabin camping experiences. A camper explained, "Camp site was nice with blacktop pad and once parked felt very secluded and could barely see site past truck in parking spot. Great for getting away and seeing the night sky."

Family-friendly amenities: Groveland Oaks County Park receives praise for its kid-oriented facilities. One reviewer summarized: "This campground has a lake for swimming, water slide, arcade, boat rentals, mini golf, biking trails and fishing. Lots for kids to do... also skate park and 2 playgrounds."

Clean facilities: Several cabin locations maintain well-kept bathroom facilities. At McGinnis Lake Modern Campground, campers appreciate the maintenance: "The bathrooms were clean. We loved the trails and the wildlife and the kids loved the parks."

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabin facilities require advance booking, particularly during summer months. Weekend dates often fill up months in advance for popular locations.

Variable amenities: Cabin furnishings differ significantly between parks. One reviewer at Clearwater Campground notes, "Level sites with full hookup. Catch and release fishing pond. Nice little swimming area. Nice playground. Cute little petting zoo."

Seasonal access: Many campgrounds operate with limited winter seasons. Seven Lakes State Park maintains year-round operations but with reduced services during colder months.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Several campgrounds near Grand Blanc offer structured children's programs. A Camp Dearborn visitor mentioned, "They have activities for both children and adults, two beautiful beaches, a pool, tennis courts, and now a zip line."

Animal attractions: Children often enjoy the unique animal facilities at certain campgrounds. According to one camper, "This is a quiet, friendly and family campground. A great place for the kids! With a beach, playground and paved roads is nice but the frosting in this cake is the petting zoo."

Cabin selection: For families with small children, choosing the right cabin type matters. A visitor to The Holly Campground shared, "We went here during the Renaissance Festival and stayed 3 nights in one of the air conditioned cabins. Three kids, two adults and two dogs. Lots of amenities, friendly staff."

    Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Not all cabins provide the same utility connections. A McGinnis Lake camper advised, "If you are hoping to hook up to electrical, bring extension cords; some hook ups are exceptionally far away from the designated RV parking pad."

Site leveling: Some cabin sites require additional equipment for comfortable setup. A visitor to Pontiac Lake Recreation Area warned, "The spots are big and well maintained. The biggest drawback is the enormous amounts of mosquitos and ticks in the sites."

Off-season considerations: Winter cabin camping requires different preparation. Outdoor Adventures Lake Shore Resort provides indoor facilities during colder months, with one member noting the "indoor pool and jacuzzi" available when outdoor activities are limited by weather.
