Best Cabin Camping near Galien, MI

Cabins at Warren Dunes State Park Campground and Weko Beach Campground provide electricity, sleeping options, and basic furnishings for visitors near Galien, Michigan. Warren Dunes offers 2-3 small rustic cabins while sites at Thousand Trails Bear Cave include more amenities like water and sewer hookups. "The cabins are small but perfectly fine for our group with two bunk beds, a small loft, and a small table inside. They have electricity so charging phones and devices is not a problem," noted a visitor to Tippecanoe River State Park. Most cabins include fire pits and picnic tables, with some offering screened porches for bug-free outdoor relaxation.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Michigan City Campground provides cabin rentals with more substantial amenities, while Potato Creek State Park Campground offers larger cabins with clean bathrooms and screened porches. Reservations are typically required, especially during summer months when availability becomes limited. A recent review noted, "The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people. There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch." Most campgrounds allow pets in select cabins, though policies vary by location.

Visitors should plan to bring bedding, towels, and cooking supplies as these items are rarely provided in cabin rentals. Many cabins feature outdoor cooking options like fire rings or grills rather than full kitchen facilities. As described in feedback on The Dyrt, "There's a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill." On-site camp stores at locations like Michigan City Campground and Warren Dunes State Park sell firewood, ice, and basic provisions. Shamrock Park and Fuller's Resort and Campground provide cabin access to nearby grocery stores and restaurants for more substantial shopping needs. Some properties deliver firewood directly to cabin sites upon request.

    Tippecanoe River State Park Campground

Very good state park and cabin campground

We visited this park twice (once in Sept 2020 and again in June 2021).  Both times we stayed in the cabin campground and both times had very good experiences.  Each time we went mid-week so there was hardly anyone else there, and that was great.  The cabins are small but perfectly fine for our group with two bunk beds, a small loft, and a small table inside.  They have electricity so charging phones and devices is not a problem.   Cabins 4 and 5 are up this small driveway and are slightly separated and I would recommend those if you can.  We never had to go to "town" so not sure how far it is to any stores.

Each time we rented a canoe and did a paddle/float trip on the river that ended at the canoe rental location.  Would not hesitate to stay here again.

    Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

    Thousand Trails Bear Cave

    Great Campground

This is a nice, family friendly campground. Lots of very friendly other campers, a heated pool, playground for the kids, nice size lots with fire pits, picnic tables, electric& water (including at tent sites). Pool has an ADA lift chair. 2 shower/bath houses, camp store, a real bear cave you can tour in (free), a creek that meanders through it. The resort sits on the St. Joseph river & this park has a boat ramp & dock for fishing. There is a gate that campers need a code to get into so it keeps out unwanted’s. Nice staff. Yolanda is a great manager. Security, a ‘honey wagon’. Laundry center. Quiet hours are 10p-8a. It’s near Buchanan Michigan and the RED BUD Motor Cross track. Very friendly people, always stopping and talking.

    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort-South Haven, MI

This is my top pick for South Haven

Although this campground has great amenities, a pool, clean showers, and good sites/cabins, it is hard to book. If you know you are going to come to this area and camp, you need to book it a while in advance. I have used a pop-up and there was good space between campers. When I tent camped, we had a great spot near the cafe, the showers are amazing over there, they are more secluded. Our tent spot had electric, water, picnic table and fire ring. We camped on the grass and there is gravel to park your car. This campground is a perfect place to stay when visiting surrounding towns and going to the beach.

Don’t forget to go to Sherman’s!!

There was a forecast or rain, don’t mind the tarp

    Michigan City Campground

    Great campground, will return

This is a beautifully kept campground just outside Michigan City, IN. It is gated so will need to call in once you arrive to enter. We stayed  in the premium sites which were 90ft pull thought with 50A service, water and sewer, and the best wifi I have seen at a campsite. The cement patio was large with a picnic table and an adjacent fire pit. There is swimming pool and a game room, and a small store with the essentials, and propane.

You are close to Indiana Dunes and the downtown area of Michigan city. Good food, shops are close by.

By the way there are a number of cabins/mini homes to rent.

    Weko Beach Campground

    Great little campground

Couple minute walk to the beautiful Lake Michigan beach. Waist deep most areas, waves can get big tho. The campgrounds beach is NOT pet friendly, but there is a flat boardwalk that takes you to a pet friendly area of beach of neighboring Warren dunes state park. Clean easy to locate water/trash/office areas. Friendly staff. They check the loops frequently and keep things tidy. Sandy but drivable roads(be careful in a washout). Flat nice sized lots. Clean bathroom/shower house! (Males and females share showers, could be concerning during busy season). Peaceful and quiet. Loved everything about our trip. (Be warned the camping lots are sand too, you will have sand everywhere! But its worth it!)

    Tippecanoe River State Park Campground

    Clean and quiet

Although we would normally wait until the last minute to book a site, we booked early this time, and were glad that we did. All tent sites were reserved a week before our trip, so best to plan ahead. We chose sites 4, 5, and 6 to accommodate our group of 7. Each site had morning shade only, and the shade from the forest to the east of the sites closed in around 5 p.m. This campsite allows up to 2 tents per site, but it was nice to spread out a bit. We chose the sites that we did expecting to have a view of the river, but the maps are misleading– there is no river view, although it’s only a few feet to the river. It’s probably for the best though, since there is a boat ramp that runs through the campground that gets plenty of use. Despite the fact that we had a fair amount of rain during our trip, our sites never got muddy, because the soil is very sandy. An annoyance when your feet are constantly dirty, but great when it’s a stormy weekend. The sites were a good size, complete with fire pit, grill grate, and picnic table, and the entire campground was well maintained. The pit toilets were cleaned daily and were always well stocked. The showers were also clean, HOWEVER, as a tent camper, you’re not allowed to use the showers.(?!!) I mean, really, what are we? Heathens? We were chased away until we removed the blue placard given at check-in. The Park has a lot of hiking trails, and other activities. The town of Winamac was pretty small, but there are canoe, kayak, and pontoon rentals nearby. We also saw a paintball court close by. Firewood($6/bundle) and ice($2/bag) are available at the park gate. There is a private, certified, gentleman selling dry, well-seasoned firewood about a mile or two north of the park on US 35, east side of the road. He charges$20 for more than 10 times the amount of wood provided by the park.

    Eden Springs Park Campground

Pleasant, friendly, small town camp with large pull through spots

Eden Springs Campground & RV Park in Benton Harbor, Michigan, run by camp manager Cindy, may well be one of our favorite small town parks! We are spending the month of August 2018 here and have found the venue quiet, well maintained, friendly and inexpensive ($375 for a month). I do not expect the prices to stay this low now that it has been “discovered”. They are working on adding an updated restroom, dog park and other facilities. The sites are large, level and spaced far apart from each other. We pulled in with a 42’ rig, pulling a 28’ hybrid trailer (total 70’) and easily pulled into our site without having to unhook. We had enough space to park a jeep in front of and and in back of the attached rig. The sites are designed so that no camper or RV faces a sewer connection. All of the hook ups are centrally located between two sites, with each rig having their driver side towards the hookups and their awning/entry sides facing the opposing side. Each site has a gravel space between them that could be traveled through, though campers all set up picnic tables, chairs and campfires there so practically there is no egress, thus privacy. This camp has the best WiFi of any camp we have ever stayed at. Some spots offer OTA TV and satellite reception. Ours did not as we chose to have a full tree canopy. Most of the sites offer Full Hookups with 30/50 amp service. The camp manager, Cindy, provides fire rings and picnic tables as requested, so, if you need either, just let her know when you call. The tables were clean and in good shape. The fire rings can be placed anywhere you want. As an aside, when a camper leaves, Cindy and her crew comes and removes the rings, cleaning up the residue so there is no mess left! The campground grass is cut routinely and “weed-whacked” as needed. Cindy has been one of the nicest hosts we have met on our travels. She is always pleasant, available as needed for emergencies and even delivered our mail one afternoon. She is a font of knowledge about the area and willing to share. Probably in keeping with her personality, the majority of the visitors here have been friendly, chatty and willing to help each other. The RV resort is about 10 minutes from St. Joseph, MI and multiple rural wineries in the area (a favorite pastime for my wife Audrey). St. Joseph’s is a small town located on Lake Michigan with excellent food, event venues and a lovely white sand beach. Be sure to stop at the Chocolate store in town & Silver Lake Pizza for a desert/dinner well worth the time. The town of Benton Harbor itself once was booming city/community, which has come into hard times, but we did not have any problems traveling around that area. This area also has a non-defunct amusement park attached to the campground which is being slowly renovated by a group of volunteers. They have restored several of the buildings, a fountain and a miniature train which takes visitors on a 1/4 mile ride on Saturday/Sunday. Additionally, the camp is home to it’s own 1800’s era baseball team which plays home and away games in the old bare handed style! Behind the camp is a now mostly abandoned religious enclave called the House of David which was started in the late 1800’s/ early 1900’s (Google it!). Some interesting architecture and several restored mansions for the 5 remaining members of the group. I recommend this park for someone wanting a quiet, clean stay.

Guide to Galien

Cabin camping near Galien, Michigan provides accommodations in a region featuring glacial moraines and sandy beaches along Lake Michigan's eastern shore. Most cabins in this area are situated within 30 miles of Galien in state parks and private campgrounds. Winter temperatures average 20-30°F while summer temperatures typically range from 75-85°F with high humidity.

What to do

Fishing access: Warren Dunes State Park Campground provides easy access to fishing areas. "The campground was very pretty. Very wooded and the sites were relatively large. There were trashcans all over the place near the bathrooms/pit toilets. So that was something you don't find many places," noted a camper about the facilities.

Beach swimming: At Fuller's Resort and Campground, the lake offers clear water swimming. "Beautiful beach. Crystal clear waters and soft sand. Great for kids!" shared a visitor who appreciated the swimming conditions.

Hiking trails: Potato Creek State Park offers multiple hiking difficulty levels with some specifically designed for beginners. "Hiking, biking swimming, fishing, what more could you ask for. We love it here," explained a regular visitor who enjoys the varied trail system.

Dune climbing: The landmark dunes at Warren Dunes State Park Campground offer challenging climbs. "If you go, definitely hike up to the top," recommended one visitor who found the dune experience memorable despite other limitations at the park.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: At Potato Creek State Park Campground, the layout creates more secluded camping spots. "We recommend securing a spot in the back sites 230-287 for larger lots and quieter atmosphere. Younger families tend to book up front near the playground and the noise and activities are more robust," explained a returning camper.

Well-maintained shower facilities: Maple Ridge Campground received high marks for its facilities. "The shower and bathroom was the best I ever saw at a campground," noted one visitor who appreciated the cleanliness standards.

Easy beach access: Weko Beach Campground offers cabins with proximity to Lake Michigan. "The campground is very close to the beach just a short walk. The only challenge is that most of the camp spots are not level so bring your levelers!" advised a visitor who discovered this less-known location.

Outdoor recreation areas: Shamrock Park offers multiple activity zones beyond just cabin areas. "They have big playgrounds that the kids enjoyed. Along with horseshoes, basketball, and volley ball courts," noted a visitor who appreciated the range of outdoor options.

What you should know

Alcohol restrictions: Some parks enforce strict no-alcohol policies. At Warren Dunes State Park, a camper warned, "If you think the rangers don't enforce that rule, you're wrong. Our neighbors got busted for it when we were there."

Weekend noise levels: Michigan City Campground can be louder on holidays. "The only complaint of the weekend of the garbage pickup at 11pm, very loud, and the fireworks being set off until after midnight (outside of the campground so out of campgrounds control)," reported a weekend visitor.

Summer crowds: Peak season brings more visitors to lakefront cabins. "Go during the week if you prefer less crowds," recommended a visitor to Fuller's Resort regarding their lakeside cabins.

Railway noise: At Elkhart RV Resort, cabin guests should prepare for train disruptions. "There is an active railroad nearby this campground. 4 Trains woke us up during the night," reported a light sleeper who stayed in one of their cabins.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Shamrock Park offers river-based recreation for children. "Really quiet, super clean and nice facilities! Right on the river and two great playgrounds for kids!" noted a family who enjoyed their cabin stay.

Pool availability: Maple Ridge Campground provides swimming options beyond the lake. "Great family run campground. The bath house is newly remodeled and very clean, nice in ground pool area & the camp store has plenty of treats for the kids," commented a family who appreciated the amenities.

Playground proximity: Consider site location relative to play areas. At Potato Creek, one camper explained, "Younger families tend to book up front near the playground and the noise and activities are more robust."

Weekend programming: Many campgrounds offer structured activities. "Owner operator campground where the family knows how to cater to the kids. Multiple activities on Saturday included tractor ride, kids bingo, and elephant ears," reported a visitor to Maple Ridge who enjoyed their family-focused approach.

Tips from RVers

Utility hookup length: Bring extension cords to cabin sites at Potato Creek. "Be ready with back up cords, some sites require 75 ft to hook up," advised a regular visitor familiar with the electrical setups.

Site levelness: Weko Beach Campground cabins may require adjustments. "The only challenge is that most of the camp spots are not level so bring your levelers!" warned a camper who discovered this issue during their stay.

Reservation timing: Book well ahead for cabin stays during peak season. "Seems like a very popular place, even in the off season, so you're best bet is to make a reservation or call ahead to make sure they can accommodate you," suggested a visitor to Potato Creek.

Campsite selection strategy: At Michigan City Campground, look for premium sites. "We stayed in a 90 ft premium pull through spot. Nice campground that is maintained. There is a pool, fishing pond, and playground for kids," noted a visitor who selected an upgraded site for their stay.
