Best RV Parks & Resorts near Alanson, MI

Crooked River RV Park in Alanson, Michigan provides electric hookups with 50-amp service and sewer connections for motorhome travelers seeking waterfront camping. Just 15 minutes north, Indian River RV Resort offers 150 full hookup sites open from April to October with big rig friendly accommodations and both 30 and 50-amp electrical service. Petoskey RV Resort, located about 20 minutes southwest of Alanson, features upscale RV sites with full hookups in a country club-like setting from May through October. "The sites are tight, particularly the inside pull throughs. Summer reservations throughout the region fill quickly, especially for premium waterfront sites. Most RV parks in the area operate seasonally, typically closing by mid-October. Dump stations are available at Indian River RV Resort, Petoskey KOA, and Petoskey RV Resort, though Crooked River RV Park lacks this amenity. Cell service is generally reliable across the region's RV campgrounds. Gravel sites predominate at most parks, with some requiring leveling blocks on sloping terrain. Pet-friendly policies exist at nearly all RV parks near Alanson, though specific restrictions may apply. The proximity to Mackinac Island ferries makes these RV campgrounds particularly popular as base camps for exploring northern Michigan attractions during the May-October camping season.

    Hoeft State Park Campground

    Clean ,breathtakingly beautiful and peaceful

Make reservations early! This is a beautiful state park with the best of pure Michigan woods and Lake Huron sandy dunes and beaches . Very family and pet friendly but also quiet and peaceful for couples who just wanna get away . Only drawback is low signal cell service but hey getting off the grid is what’s its all about. Unplug and recharge yourself.  Electric hook up availability  20/30 amp . Hiking and biking paths , a cute play ground , sandy beach with volleyball area all walking distance from campsites!  Friendly staff , we love this park !

Mackinaw City / Mackinac Island KOA

    Typical KOA

If you've camped at a KOA before, then you know what you're getting here. Easy on, easy off I-75. It's close to the interstate, but the noise was never intrusive. Mostly because of the stiff wind blowing out of the North.

The sites are tight, particularly the inside pull throughs. The back in sites are more spacious, though that's relative. Site 7 is a very spacious back in site. 1-6 are by Trails End Road, but it isn't really that busy or noisy. I would get a back in site, especially if you can get away with 30 Amp service. 16-20F  are back in sites with 50 Amp. There are some deluxe pull throughs with patio & grill on site. There are some extra long pull through sites.

There are the usual KOA amenities like a heated pool, playground, a game area & bike rental. There's a nice hiking trail in the back. It takes you to the bike trail, so back track back to the campground unless you want to walk on the bike trail/road.

What makes KOAs & this KOA special are the clean bathrooms & showers. It's always a pleasure to know that a shower will be KOA clean!

Staff was courteous & efficient. They delivered ice & wood to your site.

This is a good base camp for the area. I would stay again if in Mackinaw City!

    Straits State Park Campground

    Midge Season

Nice campground, friendly staff. The campground I stayed in had grass sites with picnic tables and fire ring. Central hydrants. “Kitchen Sink” for use at the latrine. The individual shower stalls are very clean and can get a little steamy. There is an easy trail through the park that takes you to two overlooks. St Ignace is a few minutes away.

It’s a toss up, nice weather = midges, cold weather = wind and cold. My first day was cold, rainy and windy. Second day was nice and sunny.

    Tiki RV Park & Campground

    Coin toss experience

Rustic campground on a steep hill overlooking Lake Huron. Website makes promises campground doesn't deliver. We reserved 50 amp full hook up. We were charged an additional $15 to guarantee our site. We arrived today to find a tight sloping site with only 30 amp service for our 34 ft motorhome. Upon calling the office, the very young woman who answered, first of all, could not locate our reservation even though a packet and map were waiting outside for us. Second, she asks which site, fumbles around, and finally declares "well some sites are 50 amp and some are only 30 amp. Can you spell your name again for me?" This location is close to everything in this nice town, so if you come here to stay you will be paying premium site pricing and spinning the wheel of chance as to whether it will be electric only, electric and water, 30 amp full hookups or 50 amp full hookups, because the website says one thing and reality on site is altogether different.

    Indian River RV Resort

A great quiet park with first-class staff and many amenities

What a beautiful RV resort!! Nice wooded campsites with back-in and “pull-through” options, plus “buddy sites” so families and friends can face each other. They also have “premium” sites that include options like concrete/brick patios, paved sites, pergolas, BBQ grills, etc. The vast majority of sites are full hook-ups, and WiFi is available throughout the resort. What is also amazing is how quiet the park is. Even with families and dogs it’s very peaceful and relaxing. The vibe is contagious and all the neighbors are friendly and considerate.

Very kid-friendly, including a large playground, a large heated swimming pool, plus volleyball, horseshoes, corn hole, basketball and pickleball courts.

They also have a beautiful and well-stocked camp store, a coffee shop, and lots of ice and firewood for sale. A comfortable, clean laundry room and a fitness center are great amenities. And a HUGE dog park with lots of room for pups to run off-leash, chase balls and make friends! (Speaking of “off leash”, our English Cocker Spaniel puppy darted from our trailer this evening during dinner hour. Thanks to the owners and the “it takes a village” attitude, Maizey was corralled after a brief but intense getaway chase.!)

Katie, Jonathan and Terrell are the owners/hosts and you’re treated like family from the first contact until they remind you to come back. Their wonderful team are friendly and hard working to keep the park and facilities in tip-top shape.

This is our second stay, and we have already booked our stay for next year. A first-class staff delivering a first-class experience in a beautiful setting!!

Mackinaw City / Mackinac Island KOA

Great park near Mackinac Island ferries

    Our site was $99.89 night.

We were in Site# 98. We had Full hook- up with a gravel pull-through.
We travel towing a 14 foot trailer and were able to fit both in our pull through site along with my jeep. The site was easy to level.

Our site was not shaded with limited trees (many were shaded though). This was a smaller lot with our neighbors fairly close.

This lot (a premium lot) comes with a concrete patio with a round table with four chairs, two Adirondack chairs and a fire pit and a charcoal box grill.

It is an easy access to the campground from highway -(approximately 1 mile from highway).

There is free WiFi. They offer Cable TV and there are many channels.

There is not a community outdoor kitchen or community fire pit.
They sell wood for $7 a bundle.

They pickup your garbage at your site daily.

You are allowed to ride personal golf carts. They also allow you to rent regular bicycles and e-bikes. They do not provide golf cart rentals. There is really not a need to have a Golf cart because it is a smaller campground.

They do have a Swimming pool. There is a Playground. They also offer Gaga ball, horseshoe, and corn hole. There is a Reading lending library and board games to borrow.

They have a great general store. There is an electric car charging station. They sell propane.

There is not a snack bar/restaurant on site.

The streets are gravel so not great for riding bikes.

There are great places to ride bikes outside of campground. From the campground, there is a nature trail that you can take your bike that leads you to the. North Western State Trail.

They have cabins for rent and tent areas.

They have one shower house. The shower house has individual showers. Toilets with sinks are in a shared bathroom. These are kept very clean.

There is a laundry facility. It is a cash only facility. There are approximately 5 washers and 5 dryers. It is approximately $2.50 to wash and $1.50 to dry a load.

They have a fenced in dog park.

Bugs (mosquitoes/flies)did not seem to be an issue.

There were trails to hike off of the campground.

Some fun things to do outside of the campground are go to the beach (1 mile away); visit Mackinac Island (both major ferries will transport you for free - this KOA provides you information for Shepler’s Ferry). Both ferries offer packages that include horse drawn carriage rides, Fort Mackinac admission, Island Hotel Admission, Butterfly House admission, Mystery Town admission, and Parking options). There is a Jack Pine Lumberjack show.

    Wooden Shoe Campground

Great place to relax and enjoy the water.

Wooden Shoe Campground in Ellsworth, Michigan is a small campground set on a hill above Ellsworth Lake. This park is great if you want to sometime explore Michigan’s waterways. When we visited the park, it was about 25% full which made it very quiet and relaxing. There are some great sites that overlook the lake that are inviting for an evening fire and enjoying a pleasant view.

The park has 45 RV sites with water, 30 amp electric, cable TV, and internet. There are seven designated tent sites in a heavily wooded area with some glimpses of the lake. Some sites have a nice amount of shade while those towards the front of the park are more open and have a better water view. Picnic tables and fire pits are at each site. The main road throughout the park is paved, in good condition, and easily navigable with even large RV. There is a dump station at the entrance of the park that is easy to get in and out of. A camp host is on site. The price per night to stay here is $25 and they offer a super inexpensive price of $125/week. Reservations can be made by emailing a reservation request or calling the city.

The town of Ellsworth is quite small with a couple of shops and restaurant or two. The quaint coastal town of Charlevoix is 10 minutes away where you will find plenty of shopping, restaurants, a pretty harbor, weekly live music (in the summer), a farmers market and really great library with a large room that has a great selection of books for sale for a few bucks. The towns of Boyne City and Boyne Falls are about 20 miles away and also worth visiting if you have the time. For dog owners, Boyne city has an off-leash dog park and Boyne Falls has a large ski resort that is perfect for walking dogs in the summer.  The larger town of Petoskey is about a 45 minute drive but well worth a visit.

If you want to “get away” and enjoy water activities this is a good place to come. There is a canoe/kayak boat launch just down the hill from the park that puts you in a narrow stretch of water that connects Lakes Ellsworth and Saint Clair. A short (approximately 1 mile) paddle into Lake Saint Claire lands you in a beautiful nature preserve administered by the Little Traverse Conservancy.  Be sure to visit Friske’s Orchard which has a fruit stand, bakery with pizza and sandwiches, general store and petting zoo and is only six miles away on Rt. 31.

The good things about this park are the price, access to pretty water for kayaking/canoeing/fishing and the view from some of the sites. You are not too far from some of northern Michigan’s most popular towns yet only paying $25 night. The small size of this park gives it a quieter feel than some of the nearby state parks that have hundreds of sites. When we were there about half the campers appeared to be seasonal who come to enjoy the boating and fishing. Many of these people were not there during the week which made the park super quiet.

A couple dings for this park are that many of the sites are not level and even pitching a tent can be difficult. The bathroom/shower facilities are old and run down. The main bathhouse is located in the front of the park with port-a-potty’s scattered about. Some of the sites are close together and give a crowded feeling.

Overall, I would say this is an average park which is why it gets three stars.

Guide to Alanson

RV campgrounds around Alanson, Michigan provide diverse lodging options within Michigan's Inland Waterway region, where the Crooked River connects several lakes at approximately 600 feet elevation. Northern Michigan's camping season typically runs April through October, with most campgrounds in the Alanson area closing by mid-October due to seasonal weather patterns.

What to do

Water recreation access: At Indian River RV Resort, the central location makes it convenient for exploring multiple lakes. "Location is central to several activities; Mackinac Island, Petosky, Burt Lake, Mullet Lake etc.," notes camper Steve W. The resort's position allows easy exploration of Michigan's Inland Waterway.

Trail access: Outdoor enthusiasts can find trail systems for various recreational vehicles near Alanson. "Close to stores, tubing, able to ride atv/utv in and out," explains Shane H. about Indian River RV Resort. The nearby trail networks connect to broader regional systems for day excursions.

Island exploration: Mackinac Island makes a popular day trip from Alanson area campgrounds. "The proximity to Mackinac Island ferries makes these RV campgrounds particularly popular as base camps," shares a reviewer at Lakeshore Park Campground. "Great location to stay if you are planning to head over to Mackinac island!" adds Tori K.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campground cleanliness ranks high among visitor priorities. "This is a nice family-friendly campground. We appreciated that they squeezed us in on a weekend, short notice! The site was pretty level and no problem with full hookups. We used the campground showers and they were clean and well maintained," reports Tracy K. about her experience at Indian River RV Resort.

Waterfront locations: Lakeside camping provides both recreational opportunities and scenic views. "Right on Lake Michigan with a view of the Mackinac Bridge. Great little beach for enjoying the lake. Campground is quiet and well maintained," explains Bryan R. about Tiki RV Park & Campground. The beach access enhances the camping experience for water enthusiasts.

Friendly staff service: Customer service makes a significant difference in camper satisfaction. "If you want a simple base camp to go out and explore St. Ignace, Mackinaw Island, and other parts of the U.P then this is a good option for you," shares Cheyanne P. about Tiki RV Park. Attentive staff create positive experiences even at basic facilities.

What you should know

Site size variations: Many RV parks have varying site dimensions that affect comfort. "The campground is well maintained, everything functioned properly, and the staff are friendly. My only complaint is that the sites are VERY narrow, putting you right next to your neighbors," explains Dan H. about Lakeshore Park Campground. Requesting specific site dimensions before booking helps avoid disappointment.

Reservation timing: Summer fills most campgrounds to capacity. "Great staff. Clean facilities. Quiet tent site," notes Misty F. about Tiki RV Park. Booking early becomes essential, particularly for holiday weekends and prime summer dates.

Amenity limitations: Petoskey RV Resort offers upscale facilities but has occasional maintenance issues. "If you have a big Class A RV and need a full hook up and a pool, this place will work. Lots of the amenities were broken or not available (hot tub jets broken, no hot water for showers, movie room broken)," reports Kim L. Some amenities listed online may not function during your stay.

Tips for camping with families

Playground options: Starlight Campground and RV Park offers multiple recreational facilities for children. "Great campground for a family! Swing set, walking trail, ORV trail, pool, volleyball, pickle ball court and other games! This campground is extremely clean and has beautiful bathrooms/showers," recommends Jaime. The diverse activities keep children engaged throughout their stay.

Entertainment amenities: Some campgrounds provide organized activities during peak season. "They have an app you can download and do everything from ordering firewood and ice to seeing what's going on during their theme weekends. They kept my kids busy while still allowing for relaxing time," shares Victoria S. about Starlight Campground. The scheduled programming helps families plan their days.

Beach accessibility: Water access provides natural entertainment for children. "The vast majority of sites are full hook-ups, and WiFi is available throughout the resort. What is also amazing is how quiet the park is. Even with families and dogs it's very peaceful and relaxing," notes Ron and Mary C. about Indian River RV Resort. The combination of amenities and environment creates a balanced family experience.

Tips from RVers

Power supply reliability: Petoskey KOA provides dependable electrical hookups despite tight spacing. "This is a very family-friendly park and you feel like every other site is having a family reunion with so many people at each site," observes a reviewer. "The site was level, paved and had a paved patio and was full hook-up with cable and WiFi (which worked well at our site)."

Site leveling needs: Terrain variations affect setup time. "Enjoyed our night, not crowded but it was close to the end of the season. Site 16 somewhat unlevel but blocks worked. Nice wooded area," advises Barbara P. about Tiki RV Park. Packing adequate leveling equipment ensures comfort regardless of site conditions.

Winter storage considerations: Most RV campgrounds near Alanson close by mid-October. "We were passing through the area at end of season (it definitely dumped snow and sleet all over us!) Grateful to have a place to stop, and to be able to stay hooked up! Full hookup, discount if you pay with cash!" shares Ashley I. about Lakeshore Park Campground. Alternative winter storage arrangements become necessary after seasonal closures.
