Rogers City camping areas provide access to over 7 miles of Lake Huron shoreline with sandy beaches and limestone formations. The region typically experiences warm summers with average highs around 75°F and cool spring and fall seasons where overnight temperatures can drop below 50°F. Most campgrounds in this area close for winter between late October and early May.
What to do
Hiking trails near state parks: Onaway State Park Campground features several hiking paths through dense forest areas. "Onaway is a great state park! Beautiful setting, clean and well kept by friendly staff. Book in advance in the summer to score a lake front spot. You won't regret it!" notes Matt M.
Golf near campgrounds: Thunder Bay Golf and RV Resort combines camping with golfing opportunities. "We'd stayed here two years ago when COVID restrictions severely limited activities. We noticed that the restaurant and the elk ride dinners were back up and running," states reviewer MickandKarla W.
Lake activities: Swimming and fishing are popular on both Lake Huron and inland lakes. "Black lake is a great lake for boating. The camp ground is nice, quite is enforced. People are nice," writes Chris M. about the Black Lake area. Water activities typically run May through September when water temperatures are warmest.
What campers like
Lakefront sites: Ossineke State Forest Campground offers direct Lake Huron access. "Lovely rustic campground, with several sites fronting Lake Huron. We tent-camped in August and swam twice a day in that beautiful crystal clear water," shares Mary H.
Peaceful atmosphere: Many campers appreciate the quiet environment at Loons Point RV Park & Campground. "This campground was quiet and peaceful. The owners are some of the sweetest I've ever met and they keep the campground clean and kept up," notes Sydney H.
Fall camping opportunities: The area becomes particularly scenic in autumn. "Onaway SP is a quiet little park with electric pedestal at each sight... Beautiful colors and within 10 miles of Ocqueoc Falls and 24 miles to Lake Huron," mentions Kristy W.
What you should know
Water availability: Not all campgrounds offer running water. "The vault toilets were clean, odor was minimal and they had hand sanitizer... Over all a very nice state forest campground," reports Joseph R. about Ossineke State Forest Campground.
Reservations timing: For summer camping, book well ahead. "Book in advance in the summer to score a lake front spot," advises Matt M. Most state parks open reservations 6 months ahead while private campgrounds may allow booking up to a year in advance.
Seasonal restrictions: Hoeft State Park Campground has different amenities available depending on season. "Located on Michigan's sunrise side, Hoeft State Park offers a unite getaway for tent campers and RV campers alike. Many trees for hammocking! Short trek across sandy dunes brings you to the beach of Lake Huron," explains Rose M.
Generator usage: Some rustic campgrounds permit generators which affects the noise level. "I pick rustic campgrounds for a reason. This one was full of RVs & 5th wheels all running on generators. There is no peace here," cautions Rachel G. about one area campground.
Tips for camping with families
Swimming options: Campers Cove RV Park offers child-friendly water activities. "Campers Cove in Alpena is so nice! Some great things include: putt putt, most sites are on water, there is a fishing pond, a camp store... there are boats and kayaks to rent, indoor pool," shares Alexandra M.
Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas. "There is a little basketball court/floor hockey pad for kids, and a small playground, but not much else to do at the campground," notes Maria L. about facilities at one area park.
Space between sites: For families needing room to spread out, certain campgrounds offer larger sites. "There are two sides to this campground and although the lower side has lake front sites, they are pretty small. We opted to head over to the upper part where the sites are three times the size," recommends Kate K.
Activity planning: The region offers diverse activities within short drives. "We were in town to see Mackinac Island, Petosky, Burt Lake, Mullet Lake etc.," shares Steve W., highlighting the central location for day trips.
Tips from RVers
Site dimensions: Indian River RV Resort provides various RV site options. "Nice wooded campsites with back-in and 'pull-through' options, plus 'buddy sites' so families and friends can face each other. They also have 'premium' sites that include options like concrete/brick patios, paved sites, pergolas, BBQ grills, etc," explains Ron and Mary C.
Hookup types: While some parks offer limited hookups, others provide full-service connections. "Cement pads, full hookups, quiet, great WiFi. No restrooms but if you are in the area(Hillman Michigan) this is a great place to rest and relax!" advises Carol W. about Thunder Bay Golf and RV Resort.
Maneuverability: Some campgrounds can accommodate larger rigs despite appearances. "The camp host is very helpful and guided us to our site(we were worried about being able to maneuver the trees with our 42 ft coach but no worries!)" notes Carol W.
Tank services: Some campgrounds offer on-site tank services. "They will drain your camper tanks for you at your site for $10," mentions Alexandra M. about the convenience at Campers Cove RV Park.
