Ocqueoc Falls State Forest Campground

Ocqueoc Falls State Forest Campground, near Millersburg, Michigan, is a rustic spot that offers a laid-back camping experience right by the beautiful Ocqueoc River. With only a handful of sites available on a first-come, first-served basis, it’s perfect for those who appreciate a more intimate setting surrounded by nature.

The campground features basic amenities like clean vault toilets and a hand pump for drinking water, ensuring you have what you need without the frills. Campers rave about the proximity to the stunning Ocqueoc Falls, which is just across the road and is the only handicap-accessible waterfall in the country. As one visitor put it, “It’s a beautiful area, with lots of the sites right on the river.”

For those who enjoy hiking, there’s a trail system that meanders through the woods and along the river, offering a chance to spot wildlife and enjoy the changing seasons. Many campers have noted the peaceful atmosphere, with plenty of space for hammocks and relaxation. Just remember, it can get busy during the summer months, so if you’re looking for a quieter experience, consider visiting during the week.

Rustic

Amazing rustic campground. First come first serve sites, a well with pump for water and clean vault toilets. Walk along the Ocqueoc River to the falls, walk the path through the campground or park at the site and take a short trip to the falls. Large and small sites, friendly staff.

River camping ⛺️

Only 14 campsites that are first come first serve. That’s the only down side came later in the day and still got a spot directly on the river. These are rural campsites so no facilities or park ranger on duty. $20 a night on the honor system. Stayed at site 2 had our own private path to the river behind our tent.

Wow

What’s not to love? Only a few sites, but this campground has it all. Lots of space and wooded areas around you, good spots for hanging out in the hammocks, a private swimming hole in the river. I could have used this as a base of operations for a week. Short drive to other attractions in the area, with swimming and hiking in your backyard.

A hidden gem in a gorgeous setting!

This is one spectacular place, and a very familiar campground for us. We’ve been there many times. The campground itself is about 100 yards further down the road from the entrance to the falls, across from it. The campsites are rustic, and are set along the Ocqueoc River, upstream from the falls. There are two outhouses, and a well with good drinking water. Cell service is iffy… a bar or two on a good day if you have Verizon, likely not with any of the other providers. It’s a popular campground in the summer and fall, so you'll likely have other campers around. There aren’t that many sites… maybe 15 or 20 at the most? And they’re first come, first serve. If you’re lookkng for privacy and seclusion, you likely won’t find it there during the months of June, July, and August, but the campers have always been respectful and courteous.

The best thing about this campground, of course, is across the road at the Ocqueoc Falls. It’s the only handicap accessible falls in the country, and the only real and constant river falls in the lower peninsula (not counting various artesian wells). There is an “underground river” off of Silver Creek Rd at the Little Ocqueoc River where locals take cool pictures and fish under the deep canopy of huge boulders and cedar trees in the spring, but it dries up pretty good by late summer. Ocqueoc Falls is picturesque, and a fun place to swim in the heat of summer. The park provides a nice, large grassy area for picnics and sunbathing, but there is no beach. It can be very crowded on holidays and weekends, especially during nice weather, so I’d recommend going during the week. You'll need a Michigan Recreation Passport to enter or else pay $5 (I think is the amount?) if you’re from out of state if you’re entering with a vehicle, but if you’re camping in the campground, you can also just walk across.

Personally I think the best part about Ocqueoc Falls State Campground is the trail system. It’s not a difficult trail, and circles altogether about 7 miles or so with various loops for shorter hikes. It’s cool because you get a mix of little ecosystems and different terrain and flora on various parts of the trail as it meanders and follows the river downstream. You can often see eagles flying overhead, and the trail is especially awesome in the fall. If you enjoy a fairly easy hike, then you’ve got to check it out. There isn’t much to do if you aren’t a fan of camping and hiking and fishing, and Millersburg — the closest town — doesn’t offer much other than a restaurant, small grocery, and a gas station. The campground isn’t far from Rogers City, though where there’s a decent Family Fare grocery and a cute downtown area.

Across the street from the falls

It's not a bad site, rather small, kinda felt crowded even when it wasn't, not much for trails or lakes. It is right across the street from the falls… and like right off the street. It's a great place to crash and see the falls, just not a lot to do.

Picnic table, hand pump water, and a clean outhouse. It's got what you need.

Falls, woods, river

Campground connected to a pretty long hiking trail (not too difficult) with nice wildlife, lookouts, etc. Falls are small enough to allow people to play and swim in them, so don’t expect Niagara but it’s still lovely. In autumn the ice and leaves are amazing. We’ve only camped here in fall, when not many people were around. Sites are wooded, some within earshot of the streams etc. here. Clean, basic, would return.

Small but lovely falls

Multilevel falls where you can swim. Many places to walk/hike, picnic, and enjoy the views. Beautiful overall with nice wooded campsites, some right next to water. Some poison ivy near our site a few years ago, watch your kids. Amenities are basic but modern. Highly recommended but could be very busy in summer.

Beautiful little campground

My first and only visit so far here was great! I stayed in September so maybe that helped, but it was quiet and so peaceful. Beautiful sites along the babbling river made for a relaxed time. Clean bathrooms were a plus!
