What to do
Beach exploration at Cape Cod: Sandy Neck Beach Park Primitive Campsites offers beach camping with water access. "This is one of the few places where you can sleep on the beach! It's a great place. The water is on the cold side but it's worth it. Beach camping is a very special thing," reports camper Matt R.
Island hopping: Boston Harbor Islands State Park Campground provides ferry access to multiple islands. "While you're out on the islands, take time to explore one of the others…look for sea glass on Spectacle Island and climb the hill for a view of the Boston skyline, explore the old forts and visitors centers, earn a Junior Ranger badge from the National Park Service, fly a kite, or go for a swim or kayak," suggests Jean C.
Biking on rail trails: The Cape Cod Rail Trail passes near Wellfleet Hollow State Campground. A reviewer notes, "It's a short bike ride to the Cape Cod Rail Trail which is wonderful. The bathroom facilities are much improved too."
What campers like
Secluded forested sites: Cape Ann Camp Site offers wooded camping areas. "The campsite we loved; it was clean & secluded enough but close enough to others to meet & greet if you wanted," notes Ron C. Another camper adds, "The sites are nice and wooded. All size RVs and tents are welcome."
Island tranquility: Washburn Island Campsites at Waquoit Bay Reserve provides boat-access camping. "Small island with 10 camp site (one group) all with views of the water very quiet at night. Fire pits at each site with wood on sale at the ranger hut," reports Tim C.
Primitive camping challenges: Some tent campsites near Norwell require effort to reach. At Sandy Neck Beach Park, "The hike in to the sites can be particularly difficult because it requires trekking through sand without any sun coverage and with all of your gear. It's also a bit of a gamble because the sites are not reservable ahead of time."
What you should know
Reservation timing: Popular tent camping sites book quickly, especially during summer. For Boston Harbor Islands, "Reservations open 6 months in advance and sites fill quickly, so plan ahead if you're counting on a particular day."
Transportation logistics: Many campgrounds require planning. "Camping at Boston Harbor Islands requires some planning, but you get the benefit of a remote island with minimal company. Unless you book one of the 12 yurts on Peddocks island, the camping is rustic; you'll need to bring everything, including water."
Site-specific conditions: Wellfleet Hollow State Campground has terrain considerations. "The sites aren't always level. There are no photos on the reservation website, so I've tried to capture most, but not all, here. No alcohol or pets allowed."
Tips for camping with families
Beach camping with children: Family-friendly options include sites with water access. At Sandy Neck Beach Park, "The park has 5 dispersed sites located 3-4 miles from the trailhead with picnic tables and an outhouse. A nice amenity is that the park staff will send someone to the sites to deliver 5 gallons of water for free as well as firewood for a small fee."
Island exploration adventures: Camp Nihan Education Center offers convenient but rustic camping for children. "We went camping here with our SpiralScout Circle, kids aged 4-8. The group site is super close to parking and yet the terrain is rugged enough that it always felt like we were really in the woods."
Swimming options: Look for campgrounds with safe swimming areas. "The camp is also adjacent to Breakheart Reservation, which had a great shallow pond with life guard on duty as well as bike trails and a range of different hikes."
Tips from RVers
Limited RV access: Many tent campsites near Norwell don't accommodate larger vehicles. Wellfleet Hollow has restrictions: "Under the new ownership they've paved some of the roads, but the roads are narrow and with curves. All of the conditions have led them to limit campers to tents and short trailers/campers only, with length <15' and only 1 unit/vehicle per site."
Site selection: When RVing at Cape Ann Camp Site, choose carefully. "The RV sites are not as secluded as the tent sites," notes one camper. "We had a nice perfectly level site in a beautiful wooded area."
Facilities access: Cape Ann Camp Site provides basic amenities for RVers. "They have water, sewer, and electric hookups. No wifi. There is a nice little store on-site for anything you forgot. It is also close enough to stores if you need more."
